  • Sintra is located 30 kms to the west of Lisbon, in the center of Portugal. Home to ancient castles, extravagant palaces, and beautiful natural scenery, Sintra is an absolute must-visit. In this video we’ll show you how to visit Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon, including how to get there and the highlights that you can’t miss.
    🚂 Getting to Sintra from Lisbon
    The cheapest way to get to Sintra is by train. The train leaves from the Rossio Train Station in downtown Lisbon once or twice per hour. It takes about 45 mins to get to Sintra. We took the train at 9 AM, which allowed us enough time to visit the three main highlights. It is best to leave as early as possible, however, the castles only open their doors at 10 AM. Once you arrive at the train station, you will have many options to move around the town. You can either take a bus, a taxi, tuk tuk, or walk.
    📍 Stop 1: Quinta da Regaleira
    How to get there: 30 mins walking / 10 mins by taxi / 434 bus to Sintra Town + walk another 12 mins
    Time needed: 2 hours
    📍 Stop 2: Castelo dos Mouros
    How to get there: 16 mins by taxi / 434 bus from train station

    I followed this itinerary for my trip to Sintra (Quinta Da Regaleira, Castelo dos Mouros, then Pena Palace), and I am so glad I did! This route was the best way to see a lot of amazing sites in just 1 day, while also doing your best to avoid massive tourist crowds. In particular, I am so glad I went to see Quinta Da Regaleira first so I could experience the Initiation Well before it got too crowded. An hour after I saw it, there was a line of 50+ people in a line waiting to see it! Also seeing Pena Palace later in the day is a great tip. So glad I found this video, thank you for making my planning easier.

    Just got back from Lisbon, and absolutely fell in love with Portugal. It was supposed to be a country we were just passing through, but the history, people, restaurants, beaches, castles, churches, bars, clubs, and overall affordability might just make it one of my top 3 European places to visit.

    Great video guys. It really brought back memories for me. Sintra is amazing. We've visited multiple times and the first few times we did it the same way as you did: using the bus to get to the top. But the last time we were there, we hiked the entire thing. Believe it or not, there is an amazing hiking trail from the Quinta all the way to Pena. I'd recommend starting early and doing the hike: it was really beautiful and more fun than the bus--although you have to be in shape to pull it off. We just got back to the town centre just as darkness was falling, and had a well-earned meal at one of the restaurants before heading back to Lisbon.

    Heading there in a few weeks. Been reading about Pena Palace being overcrowded with tons of time spent in lines. Almost every guidebook and blog post says to start with Pena and end with Quinta de Regaleira, so flipping the itinerary seems like a smart move. Happy to see that was true for you guys. Fingers crossed!

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  Před rokem +4

      Yes that's the reason we flipped it... we thought that everyone was going to follow the advice of the guide books and blogs... and we could already tell when getting off the train that everyone was directly going for the bus to Pena! Have fun because it's absolutely gorgeous!! ;)

    Sintra is unique in many aspects. One of them is its microclima (usually 10ºC less than Lisbon) which attracted many aristocrats from all Europe to have a Summer estate there to run away from the hot cities.
    To understand Sintra (Cintra until 1911) visitors should read about that charming and enchanted place, originally a Celtic sacred place.
    Regaleira is an homage to the secret history of Portugal. There's this 5 minutes video made by BBC explaining it: Sintra's mysterious 'inverted tower' - BBC REEL
    About Pena Palace, it's the older of its kind, concluded 40 years earlier than Neuschwanstein, which facade view (Neuschwanstein's) was copied by Disney when he made the 1st castle of Disneyland. And yes, we, the Portuguese, we don't like when people say "it looks like Disneyland".

    I just returned from Lisbon, we did a day trip to Sintra. Keep in mind the hills are STEEP! With all the walking, it gets harder as your day progresses so make sure to prioritize your visit. The gardens are all amazing, save some time to explore the grounds of the palace. Not recommended for people with mobility issues, such as wheel chair or walker, as there are no ramps or smooth pavement. Also an Uber from Lisbon was less than $20 EU, so totally worthwhile for a direct drop at Peña Palace for 4 people.

    • @worldwildhearts

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  Před rokem +2

      The walk is mostly flat from the train station to Quinta de regalera. But the other two are definitely an uphill walk. Not sure exactly the price difference between tuk tuk, taxi, and bus for 5 people, but would think that a large taxi would fit everyone at around same price as a bus if you’re just going between one spot and the other. The tuk tuks might be a little too small for 5 people to all fit in one

    Also, do these places have some entry fee??

    • @worldwildhearts

      All places have an entry fee! Sintra is very very hilly so it might be hard to move around with a stroller. The castles are a lot bigger than you might think! Thought to get the bus or taxi from Sintra town, but can you walk down to station from Sintra palace? As we are 3, avoid the full hop off bus ticket for 3. Not sure about Castelo dos Mouros as I suffer of vertigo, already this video made me dizzy :)

      @worldwildhearts  Před rokem +1

      Yes you can walk down from Palacio de Pena to the station. We didn't do it ourselves because we were so tired by the end of the day from walking around. But if you skip Castelo dos Morous, then you might have enough leg energy to do it! If you don't have the energy to walk and want to avoid the hop on, hop off bus, then you can also get a little tuk tuk ride up to or down from the Palacio de Pena. On google maps, it says it would take 45 mins to walk down the hill from Palacio de Pena to the train station. Enjoy Sintra!

    I just visited Pena Palace today, it is worth visiting. The exterior and the views are a sight to see but the interior is underwhelming. The rooms were not that big. Ajuda Palace in Belem has a more spectacular interior and was hardly busy when I visited it and it's only $5!

    Hi from Toronto. Thanks for sharing the video. I will visit Sintra in about 2 weeks and hope it will open by then. To visit the Quinta da Regaleira, Inverted tower, is there any entrance fee for this? Please let me know, thanks.

      Hi! Thanks for watching! We hope so too… There was an entrance fee to enter, but it wasn’t so expensive. Quinta da Regaleira was about 10€ per person if we’re not mistaken. Pena palace was the most expensive one but still relative 😉

    I guess the word has spread now as I visited Sintra yesterday and did it as in the video. It was super croweded everywhere. I did not even see Poco Iniciatico as there was a queue about 1.5 kilometer long....I went to Pena last and was shocked to find out that a park ticket does not even allow you to get close to the castle. Next time I would buy the full ticket and opt not to go inside as one is hushed through. A guard told me while I was exeting that the park ticket can be upgraded in the souvenir shop to a full ticket. Just be aware that the queue for entering the palace is massive too.

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  Před 11 měsíci

      You can drive your car to the town of Sintra, but you'll have to park it outside the old town. The roads to the palace is very narrow and generally only allows people with a permit (residents or tourism transportation - including uber). You can find more info about parking here: www.madaboutsintra.com/how_to_arrive.html

    I don't know if you can make the most Sintra in one day. I stayed there 3 nights and still not seen everything. I made the mistake of not giving myself enough time at moors Castle then missing a few buses up to Pena and having less time to look around. Remember to take insect repellant as I got bitten about 20 times on face and hands in my b&b. Mostly good times though in Sintra, its worth going back

    • @worldwildhearts
      @worldwildhearts  Před rokem +1

      We didn't go there as we did it as a day trip from Lisbon and so there wasn't enough time to fit it all in! You could definitely do it if you stay in Sintra for another night. Or you book a guided day tour from Lisbon (most of them stop at Roca Cape as well). It's possible to get a tuktuk that drives you around all day (not sure how expensive that is but definitely more than the bus). You can also get Ubers there and it's relatively easy too (our friends did that!). Just keep in mind that the palaces are quite big and you really need some time to see it all (without rushing through!).
