  • Whiff has always been an all time favorite of mine, despite being a character introduced in a not so "popular" era of the show by fans, I still always appreciated him regardless. No matter what he has remained prominent character in the show and I think that says something. I'd like to thank all my friends for helping out with this one, as I've asked quite a few of them on their input on certain eras of Whiff! They know who they are. :)

    I can't believe I am making this comment but I am aware the Thomas Reboot is a very "controversial" topic when it doesn't need to be. You are more than welcomed to skip the AEG Whiff part if you dont wanna hear positive points about the reboot, nobody is stopping you just please keep your rude banters and comments out of this discussion, people who DONT do that end up looking like 5 year old children. Many thanks.

      Going to be honest, if AEG was billed as a spin-off rather than a reboot, there would be at least 75% less hate for it. For example, if AEG was treated like Sonic Boom (The cartoon at least, games are a different case) people wouldn't keep complaining so much of it "replacing" Thomas.

    Whiff is another favorite HiT era character of mine cause I like the idea of an engine wearing glasses, something that's unique to the show that was never implied to others.
    And while I'm not a fan of the rubbish dump concept, I have to agree that it not only gave Whiff a purpose, but fleshed him more as a breakout character like Emily since they didn't do much with him near the end of the model series run.

      In my headcanon Whiff was built by the Sodor and Mainland Railway in 1870 after the design of the real engine he later Sold to the North western railway In 1920 when it opened in my headcanon, he was Numbered 356, with it being one of the Pre-grouping Numbers of the Surviveng engines Pre-grouping engines, he is a maintenence utility engine who can help out if needed
      Fun fact: Whiff's Name is Not only Changed to Whiffield but he still wears glasses

    I have weirdly always adored Whiff, ever since watching his introductory episode. It's just his design and everything. But I always felt that he and Emily had a deeper connection. (They both looked like the same shade of green to young me) so I always think they actually knew eachother beforhand.

    I only just realised this when you brought up the whole Whiff-Fat Controller pairing, but that pairing could be an in-joke to how Whiff's basis (NER No. 66 'Aerolite') was used to haul the NER's Chief Mechanical Engineer around in a single coach lol
    Tbh Whiff doesn't get enough love. He's one of the best characters introduced in the HiT Era imo :D

    Wow. That's a great video on Whiff throughout the show's eras. He's a great character for me, even in CGI. If there's one things the CGI writers should have done in the show like during the Brenner era is create a episode that features Whiff losing his glasses because it would be interesting to see what happens if he does like can't see well without them or something. I don't know, just a thought. What do you think?

    I’ve always thought Whiff was a good character. He doesn’t let his occupation or what others think about him stop him from enjoying life. He just gets on with it and always tries to be polite.
    I also like his basis of the unique NER “Aerolite”. It’s one of York’s finest exhibits and I always like seeing it whenever I go, trying not to keep thinking only of Whiff when I see it.

  • @jaanshersaeed4541
    @jaanshersaeed4541 Před 5 měsíci +5

    Imagine if Whiff was built way stronger than Aerolite considering he was able to help Emily move the garbage trucks out of Spencer’s way though she somehow couldn’t on her own, and the fact he’s managed to pull long garbage trains afterwards in the CGI era (it would be like if there was some short/awkward nerdy guy at school who turned out to be super ripped though not a lot of people knew and he wouldn’t be the type to brag about his strength). We know he already showed up dirty and he got his name from being so, so he probably was built to work at some other garbage dump on The Mainland as some replica of Aerolite who his old builder probably took a liking to and after doing such filthy and smelly work the people there figured they’d call him Whiff after his bad smell. Heck it’s possible he wanted to feel some importance not just after what Spencer said but maybe because of how he heard his sibling Aerolite had the prestigious role of being the NER’s CME’s private engine. It’s also implied Scruff seems to have also been grimy already and has little experience being clean so he likely also worked at some other garbage dump on The Mainland.

    Whiff is such a lovely Hit era character. While in the model series I personally didn't think much of him, he feels so right in the CGI series. Definitely wish he was given a brenner era main role. Also a comment on him as an inspection engine. This would actually be accurate Aerolite in real life! Aerolite was purpose built as an Inspectors saloon, pulling a single coach so directors/ the chief mechanical engineer could inspect and travel the line. Funny as it is kinda the opposite end of the spectrum to pulling rubbish trains. Maybe Whiff's knowledge of the railway through his island wide rubbish collection made the Fat Controller see him as the perfect guide when doing track and infrastructure inspections. So much more going on with Whiff then most people think.

    TBH, All engines go really did some cool stuff, I've don't really understand the HATE of this spin-off show, I know it looks like Mattel is trying to appeal into a baby audience yet again, this show did some cool stuff, Salty's Sea Shanty is pretty decent, I'd really like it and the music is so catchy, For me I noticed that some characters are consistent to previous incarnations such as James, I remember that one epsiode where Percy crashed leaving his wheel being, badly beaten up and damaged, I don't remember rest of the epsiode, but I'd remember seeing james screaming when he was left to shunt some dirty trucks, That's incharacter for james.
    Ngl, I'm kinda excited for later seasons, I'd really wanna see if they are gonna bring back Bertie or maybe Duck?
    Who knows what awaits us in future.

    The only reason I ever rewrote his debut episode was because the choice of class for him. Seeing a character designed off the saloon engine for the GER chairman work in the rubbish dump was fascinating and made it fun to develop his backstory.
    As he is in the show, I always loved him personality wise. Just a really pure, innocent little fella with no real malice against even those who made fun of him. It's also sweet that they attempted making him a history nerd and show some form of insecurities about his position in MIR and series 16 respectively. I guess I'm more biased towards the latter because I had the idea of his private engine past being a part of him in spite of his bullying at the time (SPOILERS, lol) but like all 'diamonds' in this era, when there's a good idea there's poor execution to knock it down.
    Anyway he was the one who brought some world building to MIR in the form of the rubbish in the tunnel. It kinda makes me concerned with the waste accumulated on Sodor to warrant him and Scruff working at a dump.
    Speaking of Scruff, I adore him as much as Whiff. Just a more reckless little engine than Whiff with a really charming little design in Musketeer and he's a lovable little box child for what little we had. Not every character has to be fully fleshed out but it's fun to see him go out of his comfort zone even for one episode only. Hell I had fun writing for him in the past four episodes of my series.
    With the rules of AEG's universe and how it was evident Mattel was desperate to go the route they did, they might as well have made him the somewhat nutty professor character. It works for his design and with how small the cast there is, he would further stand out. I haven't seen much of the series, let alone any with him in but clips of the animation for him is so good. Like the incredibly animated shows I've watched before with the ToonBoom methods like Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure and to a lesser extent MLP:FIM.
    His design in it kinda works for me, because imagining someone who spends all his time experimenting and gets as nutty as they are, I wouldn't picture them having a decent fashion sense.
    Overall god bless you for looking to this one minor character I loved for a long time.

    Great video, I'm glad more people agree AEG Whiff is amazing, but I'm a little confused about why the TVS section was split into HiT and CGI - since the Nitrogen era was made by the same team as the HiT era and a different one than the Brenner era team, wouldn't it make more sense to split the TVS section into HiT/Nitrogen and Brenner, or not to split it at all?

    • @asodorlife
      @asodorlife  Před 5 měsíci +3

      Hi! Thanks!
      I wanted to split it up since as stated in my video both Model HiT and Nitrogen's takes on the character were slightly different from each other. While one went for a geeky, oblivious take the other went for a more wiser, "down to earth" and knowledgable one. It also helped with organizing my views on the character as CGI had done a lot more development to Whiff compared to model (giving his own location, a new helper etc.)

    I have a theory that Whiff's self-esteem is incredibly low and he takes every single cruel word or action to heart (I have a full takedown of Thomas and the Garbage Train and I am itching to say it), he's just so polite and humble that he'd never breathe a word of complaint. He'll take constant abuse from the other engines, but if Thomas had just told him how hurtful all of the comments he was getting for being the garbage train's back engine was, Whiff would personally lecture every engine who dared challenge Thomas. I mean, the guy even cheered for Thomas after being abandoned, hurt, and forced to work until he could barely move by the little blue bastard.
