    That's exactly why I chose the Macbook Pro 14 inch over the 13. It's not for the extra performance but as someone who owns a high end OLED TV, I'm very sensitive to blooming and contrast ratio of screens, I also value that extra screen real estate as I had a 13 inch for years and found it really strained my eyes to work with a screen that small. For me it's ultimately all about the screen improvements and I think it's definitely worth thr extra money for that alone, especially if you were planning to spec out the 13 inch to 16gb ram and 512gb storage which was essential to me anyway, in that case the cost is only about a 300 buck difference which I feel is definitely worth it.
    It'll also hold onto its value for longer and should get an extra year of software support over the 2 year old 13 inch

    my biggest annoyance with the 14" is how they implemented the menu bar with the notch. That row of pixels that goes under the notch makes the menu bar that much thicker on the 14" compared to the 13" and Air. I'd rather have more screen to work with than a thicker menu bar. Even when the window is as close to the bar as possible, there's still this weird row of pixels that is actually the background. Why can't the window be flush with the bar up top? It's a little aesthetic thing, but it serves no purpose other than to simply look bad.

    I used to use the 17" boat anchor, and stopped buying MacBook Pros when they discontinued them in 2012. I switched over to iMac 5Ks for their superior screen real estate, and didn't buy a MacBook Pro until Apple released the 16" in 2019 when I purchased a top-of-the-line 16" with a core-i9 with the best graphics available.
    When I heard that Apple was releasing a 16" Apple Silicon MacBook Pro I sold the 16" Intel just prior to the rumored WWDC release in 2021 - so I was without a MacBook Pro until the 2021 release of the Apple Silicon model. (I had to make do with my daily driver: the 2020 iMac 5K, core-i9, 128 GB RAM, AMD Radeon Pro 5700XT w/16 GB, 4 TB SSD, 10 gb ethernet).
    When Apple _finally_ released the 16" I picked it up with the 32 GPU core M1 Max - and what a difference!
    The quality of life difference from the Intel to Apple Silicon is like night and day. No more fans constantly running, a _beautiful_ Pro XDR display up to 1600 NITs, _great_ speakers, decent mics and webcam, and _ports._
    I never even considered a 14" - on the M1 Max it remains clock locked due to its wimpier cooling system and there's just not enough screen real estate or battery power - the most charitable thing you can say is it fits better on a tray table. I _did_ once buy a 13" for my daughter for college, but that machine was a cacophony of compromises - the best thing you could say about that machine was that it was easy to carry between classes.
    I bought the 16" with a 2 TB SSD and 32 GB RAM just like my Intel 16" - and this thing's all day battery life is _great._ I no longer travel with a backpack when out for the day since between ports and battery life, all I need is a sleeve since I don't have to drag along dongles or a power brick. If I'm traveling, the power brick can remain in the hotel since I probably won't be doing anything to drain the battery down while I'm out and about.
    If you're looking for a higher end MacBook Pro I urge you to take a look the 16" - it's the MacBook without compromises. Despite what some may say about its scandalous price and excessive power, it's really no more expensive at the high end than the 2019 16" MacBook Pro - and no one was decrying the 2019's price and power back then. The M1 Max is powerful and capable - not radioactive. It's a machine that will last for a while, and its build quality and smooth confident performance will last a _long_ time.
    I _still_ have my completely operational 2011 top of the line 17" MacBook Pro though it's really unusable due it the lousy speed of its wifi (802.11n) and ports: outside of gigabit ethernet (which I'd only use at my desk) no on makes anything for Firewire 800, Thunderbolt 1, or Expresscard/34 any more, and the USB ports are limited to USB2 speeds. Point is though, that 11 years later this thing is _still_ working, and I expect no less of the 16" MacBook Pro.

    Curious as to what you think of the new M2 Air. Bigger screen than before, brilliant battery and the best for portability with excellent performance. Would you have opted for it if you didn’t already have your 14 Pro?

    • @smariko3
      @smariko3  Před 2 lety +5

      Yeh the new air M2 looks mint. Honestly though, i think the mini LED screen and the SD card slot of the M14 pro is too hard for the inner geek in me to pass. As a side note whilst i do think that the M2 air is great, i think in that price bracket, most people would be better off with the M1 air without noticing too much of a difference other than design. The M1 air is a bargain

  • @rrc1183
    @rrc1183 Před rokem

    This actually helped me with the decision between the m2 air and m1 14” pro. For my use cases, the 10+ hours of battery life, lightweight, and price, outweigh the need for ports, an overkill screen, and performance I’d likely never push. And if I did, I’d want the benefits of a 16” pro max. For normal use, multitasking with apps living in RAM, and portability, the m2 air is perfect.

    I think the design looks way way better on the 13 inch m1, also love the touchbar. The 14 inch doesnt look that good with those curves and its way thicker. Also that notch looks horrible. They should have just changed the display size of the old 13 inch m1 pro and keep the touchbar and i would be very happy. Now i wont get the new one because it looks soo ugly and its soo thick.
