Agree, as not listening isn’t just rude but possibly dangerous. The ENT I dumped was too fixated on a TMJ diagnosis to the point of not listening or ordering additional tests. My current ENT listened to what I told her about my chronic ear infections and ordered a hearing test. Audiologist diagnosed a mild conductive hearing loss and ENT said I had chronic otitis media (both did not think I had TMJ, nor did my dentist). I reported bad ENT to my state’s medical board in hopes he will see that he wasn’t just rude but possibly dangerous to his patients.

I don't know if this is of any relevance to any of you young and upcoming doctors.
I was a nurse,( am retired now at 74 years of age), but when I first went into training school; the tutor said to us, right from the word GO! Never think of yourselves as just a student. Start already NOW to think of yourselves as fully fledged nurses, making your own decisions, and carrying them out with confidence. This'll teach you to think for yourself, and analyse yout actions, and reactions, but if you get stuck! That's what the facultyvis for, to teach, instruct and encourage you to move forward every day.
I found that very helpful, and kept me motivated, when the road became too rough, and uphill in places, and that kept me going.

As a physician I enjoy your videos. They are truthful and insightful. Keep up the great work. I just wanted to share something with you and your followers.
When I first started my practice back in 2004 I covered my walls with all my diplomas and certificates. I soon realized that people really don’t care about what school I went to or where I did my residency training or how many honors I’ve received. What they wanted to know was how compassionate I was about their condition and if I was willing to listen to them. My patients know me as the “joke doctor”. Because I always start every visit by telling them a new joke. It takes away their anxiety and helps them to relax and trust in my ability to help them. Through the years I have created such strong bonds with my patients that I have been invited to hundreds of weddings, birthday, christenings, and other family events of my patients. To them I’m not just their doctor but their friend. It’s the small things that matter. Every patient that I do surgery on I make sure to call them the next day to see how they are doing. It only takes a few minutes of my time but means a great deal to them.

I remember that sinking feeling in medical school thinking to myself did I really sign up for this? What I was referring to was that I was not being intellectually challenged enough and instead was bombarded with information overload and hated and resented sheer memorizing stuff. I thought to myself great , my ability to be a good physician rests solely on my ability to memorize as much info as possible and very little to do with being able to solve a challenging conceptual problem. I thought in what world does that make sense apparently this one!

I'll level with you. I just finished up a semester long nursing theory class and that part about caring about the people you have the privledge of treting resonates with me. As someone who chose the nursing route instead of the physician route, that is the sole reason why. I had to take a month long hiatus during the second year of my BSN because of a really bad septic infection. I've gotta tell you, of the 7ish doctors who saw me, from ED to ortho to infectious disease to internal care, not a single one of them gave me rhe vibe that my admitting nurse gave me. Caring about people and showing a genuine interest in the person as a whole turns an often unpleasant hospital stay into a great experience, all things considered. Please don't take this as disparaging to physicians, as I have several that I've had the pleasure of meeting over the course of my life, but the doctor who masters the razor thin line of being smart and analytical enough to treat the condition and caring enough to realize that patients are people at the end of the day will make sweeping and systemic change to medicine, and I hope, that, once I've had the privelesge to serve patients at the end of the college journey I'm one, I woukd have the privilege to see that for myself.
This is an excellent video. Thank you for sharing.

I am a just graduating chief resident in psychiatry (attending in a week). I agree with this list and have had to rely on all of these traits heavily throughout my training. Besides this, I would also add grit/determination. The ability to persevere in the face of sometimes overwhelming adversity is a great boon as a doctor.
Conversely, I think if you cite doctors that are "good" but lacking in certain criteria, it probably can be categorized in one of these dimensions mentioned.

Nearing the end of my 3rd year of medical school and I don't think that it can be overstated how important Resiliency and Adaptability are. I have found that my key to unlocking those traits is positive attitude. Throughout your education you will have lots of tasks that can seem meaningless (and yes, especially medical school years, I've heard undergrads spout fallacies about not having "busy work" or "uninteresting material" once you finally make it to medical school, that just isn't true), your ability to have a good attitude, live in the moment, and make the most out of even the most seemingly useless tasks will decide the level of bitterness you will take with you into your future medical practice. Best of luck to all, no matter where you're at in your journey!
