Why do people think Blair and Serena are friendship goals? They constantly backstab and manipulate each other. Just because they look good together doesn’t mean they are good for each other.
Is the same with Blair and Chuck, as much as we love that couple, they really toxic for each other, especially Chuck for Blair, he hurt her in so many ways.
Well I guess it’s because they always seem to care for each other and never really mean to hurt the other too bad
True
Goals in fiction aren't goals in real life I guess.
In real life normally you want stability and warmth.
In fiction you need drama and conflict.
And these pairings deffinately have that lol
We have to keep in mind that the main characters of this show are teenagers. Teenagers, most of the time, do mistakes and got lots of learning to do, especially the ones with their type of background (alcohol, drugs, parties, parents acting like kids, etc.). Blair & Serena did many wrong things to each other, but also many beautiful ones, as well. Not many would’ve done the same things Blair has done for Serena, and viceversa. Through the ups & downs, they were always there for each other.
I feel like Lily’s style is also worth an analysis on
Totally agree I personally have always find very interesting the Upper East side Mom's Trope☺️
I love Lily's style
Agree, I love Lily’s looks
omg yes
It's very classy
Serena's style is more put together than her personality. She's a mess.
In comparison to Blair’s it actually looks quite messy haha. I mean it looks good but her hair is always quite “wild”
😂
Her personality is not a mess. Her mental health is. Deep down she has a kind heart - unlike Blair, who married a rapist.
@@nellajoensalo2316 ummm Serena married a sociopath so…
I think half of her clothes just look good because Blake is pretty. In a normal person, they would be ugly/tacky
It's also how you wear those outfits. Things wont work out if you dont look and feel confident in the outfit and in yourself wearing it.
True. Being built like a model is VERY helpful when wearing a Boho look. It's not very slimming and so those of us who are short and thick do not look as elegant in these fits unless were really good at styling
I find that to be the case with a lot of styles I see. They wouldn’t be that great if the person wearing it wasn’t already gorgeous 😂 that’s why you don’t typically see conventionally unattractive ppl modelling big brand clothes. It’s like The painting may look great but the canvas matters too
@@mauve9266 good point!!
yeah I started covering people's faces with my thumb and looking at the outfit itself and it's really weird how much that influences your opinion
Imagine we all wore clothes as representations of ourselves as it is done in films and shows for characters.
It's difficult, because we are more complex than characters. But we can wear clothes that represent certain traits that we want people to see, depending on the occasion. For example you might want to be more open and carefree when going at a party, but you might want to be more serios and intelligent looking while at work. So you can go for boho styles and preppy looks depending on what you're doing. It would be great if you would have a certain thing that makes you instantly recognizable, like red lipstick was and is used so many times in movies.
we actually do without noticing that much
@@corina.grindeanu i think its more that i cannot afford my style lmao
@@hidansektas Same !!
@@amulyasubhash7764 the struggle is real 😭
Jennie's style is also deserving of analysis, specially because she is one of the characters who go through the most visible changes, from Brooklin girl to It girl and "queen".
@@yukijames1321 Good point, but regardless of Taylor's actions, they did end up being a part of her character and the plot, in one way or another. Jenny left New York because she was having a complete mental breakdown, unsure of who she was really, scared and etc. That reflected in her clothes as well. If Taylor Momsen had a say in this or not, doesn't really matter that much, 'cause in the end it worked for her character's arc.
@@yukijames1321 but that's what made Jenny so intrusting
The emo fashion showed how she changed as a person
Stephanie Barresi no way I love both of them but Blair and Jenny were very different characters
@Stephanie Barresi she tried but couldn't achieve lol
yessssss
It's so clear how opposite S & B are, even in the big 5 personality traits they are exactly opposite, where Blair is high serena is low and vice versa... like different sides of the femininity trope coin!!!
Loved the visuals and your research! Top notch as usual
That is so amazingly detailed
@@anettedeyta2747 I know right!! I love her analysis. It's so on point and there are so many points where I'm like : oh yeah, I didn't notice that!
@@sathvikareddy8229 so happy we agree
What is the definition of femininity to you...?
Wild or bitchy?
@@katgreer6113 I was talking about the femininity trope which is usually used in creating a female character in media. Usually real people are way more dimensional than characters right? Stereotypes attribute some traits to women, men etc. And people create characters by selecting some of those traits. Sometimes, like with Blair and Serena those traits seem opposite because of the way they are executed.
As for your question, no I don't consider bitchy and wild to be feminine(anyone can be those, male or female). I don't have definition for femininity.
I love Serena but her character growth is very flat. She’s practically the same person from season 1 through season 6. We don’t see any personal transformation from Serena like we see in Blair, Chuck, Dan, and Nate.
Whenever she tried to go out on her own, she immediately quits, She consistently needs a man on her arm, she has no ambition in life.
I do however think she had impeccable fashion taste!
I feel like the writers kinda failed her character. at a certain point she just sort of stagnates or the development will last like 2 episodes and she’ll have to learn all over again next season
True
true. Everyone actually changed and developed a personality besides her. She pretty much stayed the same.
Be honest, if you were born super rich would you be ambitious? I don't think she was as codependent as she's made out to be either.
The same story plots for Serena: Dating a new guy, trying to do something for her but quiting very fast, making a huge mistake and running away/not dealing with the situation.
My problem with Serena is not that she’s selfish or a bitch or that she acts without thinking and never seems to learn from her mistakes. This is a show about awful people doing awful things, after all. My problem with Serena is that I have absolutely no idea what she wants.
What are her character motivations? For like, anything? She has no ambition. No dreams, no interests, no passions aside from partying and fucking her boyfriend-of-the-week. She’s simply content to just exist, like a plastic bag caught on a breeze, just going wherever it takes her and never taking the wheel herself. A better-written character could pull that trait off, could perhaps translate it into a desire to travel and experience the world, shrug off her privilege and go with the flow of life (like her aunt Carol). But Serena doesn’t have that level of charisma or interest in anything beyond herself and getting wasted.
Serena is immature, and the show is based around her high school to college years where everyone feels like they have time to figure out those things later on. It’s an intentional contrast against Blair, whose name doesn’t carry as much weight in the UES, so she overcompensates with her ambition.
Serena is a character who doesn’t know herself and is driven by attention, and is thoroughly enjoying her privilege. Which is why she has these fleeting interests- opportunities are freely handed to her. When you don’t need to work to get your foot in the door, and you’re hallway consists of hundreds of open doors, there’s less incentive to be decisive with one’s life.
As an adult, she might grow into being more developed, more sure of herself in a way that doesn’t require constant outside validation, but the show is capturing her during a time when people are the hot mess versions of themselves, her behavior of course being exacerbated and reinforced by the level of privilege and resources she has to her disposal.
i think without Blair, the show wouldn't be as iconic as it is
Jay2x's oh, I’m not suggesting that she should have everything figured out at her age. I’m talking more about character motivation as opposed to material or worldly ambition. For example, Chuck is motivated by his complex relationship with his father. Blair is motivated by her need to be important. Nate, an innocent, just wants his family to be a normal, loving one without any secrets or ulterior motives.
I honestly cannot say what drives Serena. I’m on season 3 where they’re just now introducing her daddy issues as her raison d’traire for her attention seeking, but it’s so underdeveloped and really should have been introduced in the first season. Maybe it’s because Blake Lively is just phoning it in, but nothing about Serena feels developed.
It also bothers me that people just call her a “party girl”. A 16 year old who is day-drinking, taking cocaine and sleeping with random strangers is not a “party girl”, it’s someone who doesn’t care if they don’t wake up the next day, because that kind of life is a one-way ticket to being found dead in a ditch somewhere. It’s so disappointing that no one, not even Serena’s mom, has sat down with her and said “why do you keep doing this to yourself?”
Burned👏🏻🔥
The character isn’t shallow. Your reading of her is.
Ms. Van Der Woodsen knew how to work a gown. I loved her gowns, she wore them effortlessly.
After watching Paris Hilton’s documentary, Clever & Chic narrator sounds like one of her many voices
Clever & Chic sounds like someone who would be on the upper east side herself hahah
It's called vocal fry. Paris, kardashians, and many other use this fake irritating voice that sounds dump
The voice is irritating
I've never liked serena but this discussion sort of made me gain some respect for the character that was created.
True
Serena’s style is amazing. It’s very telling of her personality: she not polished, perfect or even put together that well. She’s a mess, but a very beautiful one, she’s captivating. And it comes from Blake of course, cause she has this aura around her: ones she’s in the room, picture, video or anything really, you can’t help but look at her. And it translated into Serena perfectly and fitted her character like a glove. Serena’s best parallel is modern art: it seems like a mess from a first glance, from second too, so you have to spend quite a while to figure out WHY it’s a mess. Same with her. From the first appearance we see Serena in her aftermath phase and later find out the reasoning behind her actions.
Her style is amazing because it’s not necessarily ‘Serena’s style’ like with Blair and it very fitting since she let go of her queen status. Even though I always wanted to see more of Queen S, she must’ve been so powerful, it’s a shame we saw so little of it.
Personally season 2 and season 3 Serena are my favorite style vise. She doesn’t miss, well stylists don’t. Impeccable and beautiful. 👏🏻
I love the modern art analogy 🖼
When I think about it both Blair and Serena are beautiful messes. Blair is a contained mess while Serena is a free flowing mess.
Can we get a video on chuck ??
Omg yes
Yes plssss
Stephanie Barresi i love you 😂😂
Yesss
Man, now I want to see a style analysis of the Vampire Diaries' girls AND the Buffy girls
lmaooo i love buffy but they just dressed like regular average people most of the time. as for VD those girls all dressed alike. some colored shirt or skirt paired with a leather jacket and literally nothing else
@@dv.c3700 Dude, if fashion is just high fashion meant for people with money like Gossip Girl, then it has no real value and it's just classist bullshit. If anything, it gains real value when you can see normal people with normal budgets acquire their own sense of style.
After all, Buffy et al had their own styles and it did say things about their personalities, and they weren't swimming with money. Buffy's style was very different from WIllow's, Cordelia's, Faith's, Tara's, Anya's, and Dawn's and that's part of the fun.
As for the Vampire Diaries girls, they had less variety (no goth alternative style for them), but they did have different sense of styles in spite of an in-show streamlining and I also would like to see Michelle's take on it.
@@irondragonmaiden i admire your point and how eloquently you put it but to clarify my stance. i dont think an analysis of those shows styles would be possible or even interesting. they did have different styles yes but not SO different and SO evolving that you could dissect it like you could the kids of Gossip Girl. the vampire diaries girls each had their own style but the differences are so minuscule a video on them wouldn't be worth it
to take it a step further this channel ( which has such visually appealing videos) doesn't need to cover those outfits/shows . both weren't all that pretty to look at to be honest and thats part of the fun of this channel. all and all the wardrobes weren't really remarkable since their respective shows (while epic) weren't really ever remembered for the style.
@@dv.c3700 You do have a point, at least about how Vampire Diaries would be hard to do in such a visually strong channel like this with how minuscule the differences are, but I do feel like she could make a good analysis on the Buffy cast and how their outfits fit an era AND their own personalities since they are diverse (heck, Buffy goes from preppy cheerleader to more functional while still feminine clothes, Willow goes from "my mom dressed me" to a sort of faux hippie-ish thing, Faith was the extreme bad girl look with leather and blacks and reds to something still street but more somber...).
I mean, sure, some of the outfits haven't aged well and are VERY late 90's/early 00's, but that's a part of fashion too. I can't look at damn near anything that's from the 70's because I find the style ugly (ugh, shoulder pads! I like the theory behind of empowerment behind it, but I just don't like the look of it).
For all that Michelle has a preference for the timeless classic look, I do feel that there's definitely a place to talk about these things and that her channel would work well with it.
Yeah, sorry if I came off as too rude. I just harkened back to Miranda Priestly calling Andy out in The Devil Wears Prada about how everything you wear is fashion even if you try not to make it be fashion, simply because the clothes you wear were somehow inspired by the fashion industry
@@irondragonmaiden you're fine i didn't take it as rudeness this is a fashion debate everything goes. Id like to see how the channel pulls it off with the buffy analysis because seeing the decade and its effect would be cool. so ill give buffy a little wiggle room here then. this channel could def pull it off i think. ... as for vampire diaries i dont think so. their outfits were covered in blood half the time & all they ever did was get thrown around in them or die in them lol
Wait. You’re a stylist? Makes sense but did I hear right?

I love Serena, both as a character and for her fashion. Yes, I know she’s not exactly a perfect role model, but I loved her especially for all the bad things that happened to her and that she pulled through. I also loved her kindness, her sparkle, and pretty much everything about her (expect a few messed up actions in Season 5-6 lol).
It’s also funny to me how her Big 5 personality traits were pretty much the same as mine lol.
Loved the way you analyzed her!
i did admire how she was comparatively not bitter, her attitude imo is a good one for enjoying life and thats a valid priority for her to have v_v
Michelle you're so so so underrated honestly, you deserve millions of subscribers 🥺
I agree with a lot of the comments here about serena’s character did not have a lot of growth but to be honest that is the writers fault. Blair has her mother to look upto who is a highly successful fashion designer whereas lily doesn’t really have a career and serena kind of follows that lifestyle eg dating lots of men, attending parties etc.
Also I think a lot of people can relate to serena in the sense of feeling lost and not knowing what your purpose is.
Also just FYI a lot of people blame serena about the whole Nate and Blair thing and whilst serena was in the wrong no one ever mentions that Nate was terrible and was not an innocent victim in this... he only told Blair a year later what had happened probably because he wanted a chance with serena, he didn’t even feel bad not even confessing the next day or even week
Exactly and as soon as Blair forgave him, he went on to kiss who he thought was Serena. He only wanted to get back of Blair because of his father. And later on when he found about Chuck and Blair (which happened after he and Blair had broken up), he acted as if she cheated on him. I really hated what the show did there with trying to make Blair the villain in that situation. If you ask me Dan is the worst character on GG but Nate is a pretty close second.
@@xoalex06 I agree with how horrible Nate was there but he is a genuinely good person unlike Chuck who tried to rape two girls and sold Blair which was past season 1 so if you ask me Dan and Chuck are tied as the most horrible characters period
@@naomikimbokimi9015 I'm not saying what Chuck did was right, but at least he felt remorse for his actions, apologized for it and tried to make it up. Still doesn't excuse it, but at least he realized he was in the wrong. Nate was like "oh yeah I cheated with your best friend, sorry I guess, take me back so my dad can sign the deal with your mom. Hey Serena, I don't give a crap about Blair, I love you, gimme a kiss". And then when he found out about what happened between Blair and Chuck, he acted as if Blair cheated on him (even though they had broken up). And Dan...Sure he seemed like a nice guy on the surface until you find out that he was basically cyberbullying the love of his life, her friends and basically everyone he knew the entire time. Then when everybody find out, he was just like "yeah, I'm Gossip Girl, deal with it". Even tho he was kind of responsible for Blair and Chuck almost dying and Blair's miscarriage. And not only that but he also cheated on Blair with Serena, then tried to make Blair the bad guy and as if it were her fault that he wasn't able to keep it in his pants. I agree that it was also Serena's fault since he tried to seduce him and taped them but honestly, have a little self control. All three of them are the worst but at least one of them realized he was wrong, had a total 180 and felt remorse for his actions. While the others continue to be seen as good guys, even tho their character development was actually for the worse (at least in Dan's case).
@@xoalex06 bruh the only thing Nate literally did was cheat once which was terrible but Chuck is a literal monster so I dont understand because Chuck and Blair have always had a toxic cycle and if there were more seasons we would have seen more of that toxic vicious cycle and plus Nate actually tries to be a good person and aside from cheating which was bad he always tries to do the right thing whereas Chuck actively sold Blair

Thanks for the video!! I'd been waiting for Serena's
I watched both of these videos and in conclusion, I'm smack in the middle of Blaire and Serena. I dunno if that's a good thing or a bad thing. My style also reflects my dual personality traits as I love dark blue and gold and wear them a lot. I also wear a lot of whites as well as darker colours. I'm also very into jewel tones and neutral colors. I love deep rich hues. I hate bright colors like neons. I'm very curious in nature, as well as being very academic. I love your videos as it helped me understand myself and my personal style alot more . So thank you and please never stop doing this.

I really like your analysis and content-wise, its packed and I can see a lot of potential in your channel. I hope you dont take this the bad way but my only critique is your voice. It comes off to me as either sleepy or seducing that when the video started I wanted to close the video right away and move on but the topic is something interesting for me so I carried on. Still I look forward to more of your Gossip Girl fashion analysis.
Yes I agree. I wish she would stop or decrease this vocal fry. It’s not an inherent property of a voice so I think it’s OK to suggest this.. Vocal fry (and uptalk too) undermine the perceived competence with the speaker and quality of the content - there’s actually research on this so it’s not just opinion. She must’ve picked up this way of speaking because it was fashionable (and considered attractive?) for a few years but for people of different ages it’s odd, sleepy, or like an attempted seduction. This actually seems like a decent channel. I truly hope that she sees these comments and doesn’t take it as it “hate” but see the constructive advice aspect.

P.S. I love your new logo!

Love this video ❤️❤️
Love your videos keep making them plz
Many people below saying Serena had no ambition which is true but i guess writers tried to show that Blair and Serena were exactly like their respective Mothers. Blair's mother was strong, Independent, career oriented (not considering toxic traits here) and Serena's mother was into marrying rich people to double her wealth. Same way Blair wanted to prove to herself (or her mother) that she is like her and Serena who was just like her mother into Love/fling. Infact i find this theory so accurate that writers showed how Lily and Serena unknowingly followed same love path (Dan's father-> Lily and Dan->Serena)
I felt that everyone thinks she is the most beautiful, but I always hated her looks (her every day style not big events) and it always looked cheap for me.
I actually loved her every day looks! She could pull off a basic cardigan, match it with something fashionable, and make the whole outfit look so glam.
I agree! I never understood why Serena was perceived to be this fashion icon, when there were characters with so much better fashion sense--like Blair. Serena's everyday (and sometimes even formal) attire always looked lazy and cheap. Her hair was always undone and messy, not the kind where it looked cute but the kind where it looked like she just rolled out of bed without even touching it. Her accessories often didn't match the outfit, and the contrast between the colors she chose to wear just weren't cute a lot of times.
@@sifyh.9561 Agree. 100%. The only character who dressed just as awful as she was Vanessa. Even Juliet pulled off better looks than Serena.
I think Blair is the most beautiful and interesting character on the show

Honestly your videos are really good. The production quality is amazing.
awesome video!!! i already loved the show but had a hard time putting into words why i didn't like serena xD but your personality analysis was very helpful understanding of her not so favourable traits, like irresponsibility or flightiness, occassional narcissism, :o those do really compliment her positive characteristics so consistently :o i feel like she was actually very well written :o and mostly comprehensible in relationship style, her relative superficiality is intentional because the same trait that makes her popular is what perpetuates her frienship with blair, :o its fascinating how they are opposites that i'd say harmonise rather than attract, since their individual choices are so different as is their pattern of mistakes, which is what usually brings on conflict between them, their temperaments overall naturally balance out :o
This was really nice
I love this video you really put so much effort in it so i'm really imprest.
I heard you said that there is another video for Blair but i cant find it...can someone help me? :)
Serena's style is amazing. However, her character annoyed me so much. Especially during the later seasons when she was a bitch to Ivy and Lola and the fact that she cheated on Nate and made Dan cheat on Blair like wtfff and her whole blog era phase.

A really cool analysis would be the fashion in Black Swan! Dance couture is so beautiful, and the colour dynamics between light and dark (with splashes of ballet pink) really reflect its plot pacing and character development
Serena reminds of Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe, Brigid Bardot - a sensual beauty and free spirit. GG could have done so much more with her strong but vulnerable character. Very thing about her was flowing (hair, clothes, character) vs Blair’s curated style and self. A Monroe vs Hepburn 👩❤️👩
Love the vid ❤❤❤
I love these videos Serena is my favorite character and style icon from GG. Could you do a Golden Girls style videos on all the characters especially Blanche’s it would be amazing and Sister and Sister.
