- Kilkea Castle is located 5 km (3.1 mi) northwest of Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland near the village of Kilkea on the R418 regional road from Athy to Tullow. It was a medieval stronghold, for over 700 years, of the Fitzgeralds, earls of Kildare.
Sir Walter de Riddlesford built a motte and bailey on the site of Kilkea Castle in 1180.[1] A granddaughter of his married Maurice Fitzgerald, 3rd baron of Offaly, and so the Manor of Kilkea came into the possession of the Fitzgeralds and was to remain in the family for over 700 years.
Sir Thomas de Rokeby, the Justiciar of Ireland 1349-56, used the castle as his military base, and died here in 1356.
In 1414 the O'Mores and O'Dempsies wasted the English pale. According to Francis Grose's Antiquities of Ireland, "to curb their outrages, Thomas Crawley, Archbishop of Dublin and Lord Justice, set out from Dublin, but proceeded no farther than Castledermot; the troops went forward under military leaders, he remaining engaged in processions and prayers for their success". According to Grose, the "enemy were defeated with great slaughter at Kilkea". Later, in 1426, John FitzGerald, 6th Earl of Kildare reputedly "strengthened Kilkea with so many new works, that he might be said almost to have new built it"
Within the church there are several interesting late medieval carved stones. One is a stone plaque called the Monkey Stone dating to the sixteenth/ seventeenth century is set into the west wall of the church. The plaque depicts a monkey with collar and chain holding a helmet in one hand (Fitzgerald 1899-1902, 240-1). The monkey is part of the Fitzgerald Coat of Arms
Close by is another carving of a limestone panel with a mermaid carved in relief. She hold two long strands of her hair in her right hand and in her left hadn she holds a comb/mirror. The lower part of her body is shaped like a fish and a snake-like creature is biting her tail’ (Fitzgerald 1899-1902, 241).
A third plaque bears the coat of arms of the Fitzgerald family
carved in false relief with a heater shaped shield with helmet and lynx above. Below the shield in the lower corners are two small shields; the left one has the arms of Fitzgerald impaling Keating while the right has the Fitzgerald arms impaling Geidon. Below are the initials: I K 1630 SG (Fitzgerald 1899-1902, 240-1)

I was in my local cemetery again today. It’s truly beautiful to see loved ones caring for their departed. I often reflect on my loved ones that have died, those whose graves are too far away for me to visit. There is a lot of wisdom about life on headstones too, I am reminded of the little time we have here to share with each other. We don’t have castles here in the USA BUT the veterans get a lot ❤ This time of year in my town of Grass Valley CA, the Ladies Relief Society lays fresh pine wreaths on every grave. It’s a beautiful tradition and perhaps something I might make a personal, permanent tradition out of, going and visiting the cemetery this time of year. Merry Christmas everyone ✝️🎄
That's lovely, yes Christmas is a time of Joy but for a lot of us it's also time to reflect and remember our loved ones who are not with us today

I believe that the hole probably had the altar on it and the crypt was down that hole. Perhaps it has been sealed below. Fascinating explore. We are expecting heavy rain here as well.

That is a beautiful old cemetery. Beautiful old stones. The writings are well preserved under these trees. Oh this is an older video. The memory clicked with the stone for the master’s dog.

Interesting, you have a family castle that is now a hotel. ( I am guessing that the family no longer has anything to do with it. ) You have a golf ⛳️ course, both are beautiful. Then, you have the ruins of a, I guess medieval, church and graveyard. This graveyard is a real find! Very interesting headstones 🪦 and tombs. The Mermaid 🧜♀️ and monkey 🐒 images were particularly interesting. Was not the Mermaid part of ancient Christian symbolism?

People tend nit to understand my obsession with graveyards. Just one look at cemeteries like this one, that should tell them all they need to know. Cemeteries are so peaceful and calm and the most interesting people “live” in them.
