That was a nice drop on the pine tree. Just the right amount of hinge to keep it straight, but enough cut to get momentum to carry it to the ground. Good Job! You had your inner Buckin' Billy flowing through you!

Mike, First time commenting. About the coyotes. It is NOT illegal to hunt coyotes at night in PA. We do it all the time in Central PA. I use a very strong Red light to spot the coyotes and they don't spook but don't use a regular white light must be red., best to have a partner to run the light and one shooter with a small caliber rifle. I use a 22-250. I also use a Fox Pro electronic game call but you could start out with mouth calls. Do some research and have some fun disposing of them coyotes. Be safe!

Can you please remind everyone again of what a great county this is and what it took to get here. And the reason we are still here is because of our great military. My request may sound a bit self serving but truly it's from the heart. Our son is in the service and has been for about 20 years he has a wife and 4 children at home. Thanks for the video and can’t wait to see the tool rake revealing. I agree with what everyone has been saying about the coyotes as we have been living with them for 20 years on my property. I have had them try and bait my dogs with wanting to play, but know of the consequences as I assumed more were waiting fir them to take the bait and follow. They have been taking out a lot of the neighborhood cats and raid all the fast food restaurant dumpsters around me as I can see the resulting “evidence”. They usually are pretty timid animals and don’t attack humans, but in a large pack all bets are off.

Around us in KY I've heard of coyotes taking calves, and some nights the cattle near us are restless and crying all night. I've seen a pack of 12 within 50 feet of my fence behind my house and they tried to bait my 70 pound dog out. A common trick in mating season they use is to send a lone In heat female near a male dog and let it lure it to the hiding pack. Our county issues warnings during mating season.

    @SwimCoach8 Před 4 lety +1

OK here is my understanding of the Coyote or wild dog problem. White Tails are a cud chewing animal. They can't run forever, they need to stop to rechew their browse. A dog/coyote can trot along for days. If they focus on an animal, when browse is scarce, all they need to do is push. Eventually, through stress and the need to rechew a cud, a deer will literally run out of energy. At this point, one or two coyotes can down a deer. Your problem will be magnified in the spring. White Tail fawns literally have no scent. A Doe will hide them and unless a Coyote sees them or stumbles on them, they are safe. However, a large pack of coyotes can cover a vast amount of acreage. They will use their numbers while covering your woods to increase the possibility of taking a fawn. Find some one in your area that hunts or traps them. Learn the best method, in your area, to deal with them. They can devastate a deer and turkey population.

Happy Birthday Piper!!! Such a pretty pup!
As far as your question about coyotes, I am in Elk County,Pa. and we hunt and trap them all the time here. It can take as little as 2 to take down a full sized deer. But they usually hunt in a pack of 5 or more.
I was chased one hunting season by a pack of 8, almost dusk on the 1st day of doe season many moons ago. Mid 90's era. I was struggling back towards my pickup in almost waist deep snow and heard the yipping behind me, turned and saw a pack of 8 coming up the "trail" that i had made. They were about 50 yards off. I took 4 shots at them with my rifle, but the low light conditions made it hard for the .300 Weatherby to find its target. When I was within 50 ft of my pickup, I had drawn my .357 revolver, because I couldn't see them anymore but I sure could hear them! The hunter became the hunted! Very bone chilling experience!

Outside of deer seasons, I have ran into a pack of 6 and 7. Not sure how many are needed to take down a deer, but I was told a single coyote can take down a small deer. I have read in the Missouri Conservationists that they usually hunt in packs. One will hold the animal down by the throat, while the rest will open it up and eat it alive. Sorry if that grosses you out.

Greetings from No. VT - A nice snowy morning. I am not a hunter but my neighbor is an avid hunter. Over the years we have had to deal with coyotes periodically moving in and attacking deer in our area. Your comment about the small buck possibly being injured is very likely, from what I have heard from him. Out in the woods the coyote packs tend to go after the easy kills; small game, weak/injured deer, domestic dogs/cats, etc. The good news is that once the pack has cleared out weak and infirm in an area they tend to move on, but Melissa carrying a rifle while walking the dogs is really a good idea.

Morning Mike.... Here in Colorado it doesn’t happen too often that I’ve seen, but the times I have, it’s been packs of 5-6. Usually we don’t see it unless the rabbit and turkey populations are down. Unusual that it was a buck they took, unless he was protecting the does... More often here when a deer is taken it’s cats, but they eat part and cover the rest with pine needles or leaves and come back later. So your call is likely accurate. Will message you.

We have since stopped that and true nuisance animals like gopher and ground squirrel populations of fallen way off. Horses and cattle don’t get injured and we actually tend to our stock, so we don’t have any issues with them bothering our calves. I frankly enjoy sitting on the porch at night and hearing the coyotes calling back and forth to each other. We have a pack of Caucasian Ovcharkas (see also Caucasian shepherd dog) that help us sleep better at night knowing they are out with the herd.

My property just on the south side of Seattle is full of Coyotes. We have had three cats go missing over the past 20 years. Also I have seen a Bald Eagle take a small miniature dog away at a friends property a few years back. That was heart breaking. The Coyote population has really gotten out of control almost everywhere because as we have less gun owners and farmers they are not being controlled like they use to be. I see them over my fence once in awhile and even though I carry I am within the city limits and can't shoot them. A real problem as the homeless camps get bigger in the woods and they leave food out the Coyotes will come in and take advantage of that as well. A real problem and not sure how you deal with it? Happy 5th Birthday Piper! Quote of the day:
There will be times in our life when we feel our story isn’t being told and we will wonder if we are worthy. How did we get here and why me? We are either day dreamers that can’t see the road ahead…nothing but a foggy mist or we are idealist who believe that nothing can stop us and the path for as far as our romantic thoughts will take us will be our guide. Every road lead to somewhere, it’s knowing when you have arrived that counts! ~ George Wheeler

An alternative to a night vision scope is simply a green or red led flashlight, mounted on top of a scope. The lights will light up their eyes, and the scope allows you to zero in on the yote. The lights and mounts are very inexpensive. I do not know if they would be legal in PA, but they are here in MI. Our only limitation for night hunting is a caliber restriction of .269, so anything smaller that a 270 is legal. You can also use a separate light for locating the yotes, and just use the scope mounted one to align for the shot. Most of these have an adjustable focus beam.

He lived off the land. What he told me was coyotes run the deer down from behind and keep nipping at their rear legs as they run them down until they tear the tendons and the deer then drops. That’s when they surround them and eat them because they can’t run anymore. So I was told anyways...

Here in IN at our largest state park, there was a concern of the deer population being too large and DNR was seriously considering reintroducing wolves into the state. Fortunately a Biology Professor from one of our universities did some research and told DNR there was no need because the coyotes were hunting in packs and would control the population, which they are. Not sure exactly how many it takes but I would think no more than four. By the way, our DNR is notorious for poor decisions. They have reintroduced beaver which are a nuisance, wild turkey which the population exploded so then they reintroduced Eastern Diamondback rattlesnakes to control those, not good. They were talking about reintroducing Bison! Fortunately that got shot down. My word, hitting a deer is bad enough. We don't need to be dodging A 1800 lb Bison.

Most of the bobcats are taking turkeys and other small game, but last summer there was trail camera video of a decent size tom taking down a fawn. A few years ago four coyotes took down a three year old eight point and had him gutted and most of a hind quarter devoured before he died. According to a rumor from my neighbor who traps primarily coyotes but is finding more and more bobcats in his traps that he releases, the DNR is considering an open season on bobcats in the near future.

I lived in a rural area of Arizona. I thought I knew coyotes. However, when I moved back to Maryland, I was in for a surprise. The coyotes were three times larger than what I saw in Arizona. I was told that during their eastward migration, they mated with wolves. I don,t know, but I have seen coyotes that are easily 30 or more pounds. They hunt like most dogs. They chase a deer until it falls from exhaustion and they are pure devastation on fawns. I was told that they can kill a newborn calf. They are most active at night,
but they will answer a distress call during the day. For about $500-$1000 you can get an infrared light and rifle scope. I have never used the light and scope set-up, but it may be worth investigating. On a lighter note; do you have enough dead pines that you could harvest fatwood for tinder in Hunter's business? It does not take much to start a fire. I have seen firewood sold in mesh bags. I like them better. They help contain most of the mess and they do not trap moisture the way plastic does.
