Proving Dodge's 8.9 Second 1/4 Mile Claim for the 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170 is LEGIT!

  • So I've already seen some chatter and content being put out talking about how the 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 can't run the 1/4 mile numbers and speeds that Dodge stated at the reveal. The basis of these theories being that Dodge left off the scoreboards during the dragstrip pass during the reveal in Las Vegas. Additionally, using stopwatches, people have manually timed that reveal run and came up short of Dodge's marketed numbers. Then of course they bring up the original Demon and how people had trouble reaching the marketed 1/4 mile time of 9.65.
So did Dodge intentionally try to pull one over on people by hiding the actual run time at the reveal? Did they lie and exaggerate about the 8.9 time that the Demon 170 supposedly does? Those are the questions I try to answer using actual data and comparisons. I try not to get too technical in this vid but part of answering these questions does involve some drag racing basics and the things that affect quarter mile performance.

UPDATE: Dodge has put out the official time slip from the 8.91 run. While I was wrong on the date and place of the record run (although Dodge doing additional testing at No Problem Raceway did still happen and it's possible they did make other 8 second runs there), everything else I discuss in this vid still holds true. Plus the timestamp of the record run puts the DA at -300, so the air was not even as good as I assumed it was, which supports my belief even further that people that get this car and actually race it will not only have no issues hitting the certified time, but will most likely surpass it when in even better conditions.

It can definitely get frustrating. There are times I stop and debate not putting up certain races or runs because of that but in the end I made a promise that every single run ever made in my 1320 will be in a vid, regardless if I look like an idiot in it (like my couple transbrake failures lol). But if I can at least help educate a couple people it'll be worth it.

Thank you for doing this!! When I realized it was Vegas, I knew they wouldn't show the time. Plus, an old racer once said to me, "Sometimes the fastest car doesn't win." There's luck involved too. Make 10 passes on the best track prep and the best DA day you've seen, and show your friends the best time slip. That's racing.

Great video, DA was very well explained, and you showed / proved how much DA can influence a vehicle Elapsed time and more so MPH.
Not to be critical, but the better marker / indicator of Horsepower or DA is MPH data versus ET data. ET better reflects things such as traction / tires, suspension, gearing, (basically things that effect 60' times). For example, One night notice, changing their rear end gearset from a 3:55 to a 4:10, and going from a sport tire to a drag radial. Your 1/4 mile runs might look something like this. 12.0 @ 119.1 to 11.69 @ 119.4 with DAs with in 4 percent. (these are examples from experience with my 03 Cobra - Terminator. Car improved nearly a 1/2 second, but No significant improvement on MPH. Or anyone that has raced down a official track at least 3 or 4 runs on the same day, may have noticed that there ET might vary up to 1/2 a second (due to tire spin, missed shift or ?) but the MPH should look very close / consistent (within about + / - 1 MPH).
Engine mods / horsepower is best reflected in MPH. Of course it also effects ET. Example, as above my car was running 119 MPH. Added headers (and tune to support headers) about 34 rear wheel HP or over 3 MPH. Similar DA (within 250) car ran best of 122.48 MPH. ET improved to 11.585, could have been a little faster, but track conditions not optimal / effecting 60 foot times. (FYI - My Goal was 11.499, so the track would have to tell me to slow it down, go home, or come back with a rroll cage).
One last thing. In the video you gave a very good analogy, stating if you go hiking up in the mountains or any hard exertion, you will probably notice getting short of breath much easier than at a lower elevation. Which is true but you said because "there is less oxygen." Not to split hairs, but there is No difference in oxygen, it is just the natural force (lack / decrease of a natural force assisting air / oxygen into your lungs)
Anyway, really good informative video !!!!
I live in Phoenix Arizona. Last weekend was a Sad Day for us Arizona Drag Racers ! The weekend of March 24-26 was a National NHRA Event held at Wild Horse Pass Raceway, formerly Firebird Raceway. Track opened 1983 (I was there opening Day at 16 yrs old) and track saw its Last event last weekend, I was there also. Sad to me personally, as I have been going to this track as a racer and spectator for 40 years. (I even took 2nd place in the High School drag racing event they had in 1985). The whole racing facility will be gone and will be part of a highway overpass.
LAST Note:. Clay Milligan (Top Fuel Driver). Has a 8 minute video talking about this Drag racing track and all the other racing this facility supported,. Drag boats, road course, Bondarant school, etc..

      One last Note.
Congratulations to Dodge, and Many thanks !!! For Totally Pushing the envelope. A 8 SECOND FACTORY CAR.
      REALLY A AMAZING FEAT !!!!!
A car that most anyone can buy for a somewhat reasonable price (to run in the 8s is NOT going to be cheap in any vehicle). A car you can drive to the track comfortably, with your wife and 2 kids. Have the AC on listening to a nice stereo, running pump fuel (E 85), getting decent fuel mileage, and a full factory warranty to boot !!
      Almost unbelievable !!
But, I fully believe it is a 8 second car !!

for doing the almost impossible !!

You're definitely right about the mph. I know a lot of my runs where I had a bad launch or something else go wrong where my trap speed stayed not far off from the good runs. I didn't know Wild Horse was shutting down too. I was there once for a Truckin' Nationals event back around 2000 when it was still Firebird. I even have the flyer from that event still. I hate that all these tracks are shutting down. The Houston track where I just ran my 10.9 the other month is having its final event ever this weekend. And I did get all the way through, including you extra note. 8 Second car that's street legal with a warranty is an insane feat. I remember racing in the 90s and thinking a 12 second car from the factory was crazy. Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it!

This is why Tesla plaids are consistent they don't use air to move they use electrons. If people would understand if you have a refrigerated cooling system to freeze your intakes and a freezing radiator for intake air it may get 7's. Because Air density would be exponentially denser. But that would be a heck of a air cooling system.

Mopar Insiders bought a 2019 "1320" fully loaded model. It struggled to do under 12 seconds in the quarter mile. Also, Jared Balfour was overweight.
Jared got frustrated and sold it shortly after using the excuse that the clearcoat was flaking off the quarter panels.
In reality, the 1320 carried about 300 lbs more with the accessories plus Jared's extra weight. The only flake was Jared.🌬️❄️

I watched all those 1320 vids before I got mine. I think it even had a sunroof lol. I was disappointed when they got rid of it. I know with mine I hit Dodge's 11.7 for the first time in Houston when the DA was around positive 1100. That was before I did all my weight reduction and the only thing I pulled were the seats and I was still a little bit heavier than a stock 1-seater (not to mention I'm 235 myself). I even ran on the stock 20s with stock Nexens on the back. So in the case of the 1320, they easily surpassed Dodge's claims.

Just like the advertised 11.7 times for the 1320's, my best there is 11.8 in a single seater with optimum tires & wheels, light battery, and cool weather. I’m going to a local TNT tonight with the DA forecasted to be 2000’. That’s a good compromise between the hot summer months and cool spring/fall type DA’s. problem is most people aren't racers and all they care about is that 'record' number. If they showed the numbers and it ran a 9.5 people would just trash talk how it's supposed to be so much more powerful than the OG Demon but can just barely outrun it. But that also goes to my argument of what if they did the reveal somewhere else? At the exact same time there were tracks with negative DA, and other tracks with worse. The numbers could have been all over the place. No other manufacturer is touting 'average' numbers. Same with horsepower ratings. Clearly the engine, or any engine in any car, isn't producing the power figures manufacturers certify and display on window stickers when they're in higher elevations or worse atmospheric conditions.

I've done a lot drag racing. I wouldn't call Dodge a liar over it! People who drag race know there are a lot of variables that effect 1/4 mile time.
You point to one at Vegas because while not exceedingly high it has some altitude. I have ran at Vegas. I've also ran at Orlando Speed World.
Tire Compound is another! Not dissing Mickey Thompson but those are DOT drag tires! If wanted to run a serious time those would be the first things I'd change! Then tire circumference also effects gearing!
Now you might say but you are taking it from stock! Seriously what serious racer isn't going to play around looking for the best possible combination or more power?
The fact is the car as it is has the potential to run the claimed numbers! In the right hands with the right driver it may in fact run faster than their advertised times! As someone that has track time I see a few areas I'd be playing with it to set it up for me. I think this time will turn out to be different than with the original Demon.
Let's face it there are a lot of people on the let's trash Dodge for anything we can bandwagon because they are pissed off over the cancellation of the Hemi! Today the Camaro was just announced as being cancelled! The Mustang is on borrowed time to! I love the sound of big and small block Mopars of a different generation. I don't find seeing why Dodge is doing what it is doing too hard to comprehend like some seem to be having a problem with. I'm just glad other than potential future car prices its not going to the 1970's all over again. At least EV's can get out of their own way! I think they will offer something with the Hurricane 6 as a crossove vehicle. I get a 6 isn't a V-8 but I also get the right set up six can beat an 8 cylinder even one that has been worked and of significantly more cubic inches!
