Kindle Paperwhite vs Signature Edition vs Oasis | Best Amazon Kindle 2022

  • Reviewing the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (11th Gen) Signature Edition and comparing it vs the premium-priced Kindle Oasis and the standard 2022 Paperwhite. Here's how these eReaders stack up for specs, screens and everything else, so you know which is best for you.
Personally, my favourite is the Kindle Paperwhite, which is more budget friendly than the Oasis and boasts upgrades like Type-C USB charging. Battery life is stronger and if you need more storage space, that Signature Edition is still cheaper than the top-end Amazon e-Reader.
That said, the Kindle Oasis does pack physical page turn buttons and a slightly larger screen, plus a unique design. All three 2022 devices offer the same UI, similar performance and similar display technology, although the Oasis does have a brighter e-ink panel vs the 11th Gen Paperwhite and Signature Edition.
So which of these options do you think is best for you?

Great review. I was given the oasis as a gift several weeks ago and I truly do love it. I have a 10th generation paperwhite that I thought was great but the oasis straddles over the top of that old fence and really steps into a more refined and enjoyable experience.
The real beauty of the oasis screen for me was discovered when I used it to read under an incandescent light source. The font was truly razor sharp and indistinguishable from an actual paper page.

I just upgraded to an Oasis 8GB during Prime Days (got a bundle with cover and charger brick). I had been using a 2014 Paperwhite, which was getting very slow and glitchy- I couldn't wait for any longer to replace it. So far I love the Oasis' larger display, warm lighting, case design, and best of all, the page turn buttons! I've been reading on a Kindle since the early days of the white keyboard model, so I loved those physical buttons. Set up was really easy using the Kindle app on my phone and I was happily reading in minutes.

The only thing that bothers me about the paperwhite is that it does not have physical buttons to turn the page. I have had the keyboard 3 for more than 10 years, which even has a keyboard. It is not tactile. But I find the buttons to turn the page comfortable. Do you get used to turning the page with the touch? I wanted to buy the Oasis but I didn't want to buy it and next month they will announce the release of a new edition...

I've been using the Kindle Oasis since March and the Paperwhite 4 for the previous couple of years prior to that. I take long motorcycle trips, road trips, whatever I want. The Oasis' battery is not something I have to worry about. I can get through a few novels or more on a charge and not be concerned. I don't even turn off the backlight anymore, I just keep it on at level 11, with the warmth at 13 and I don't notice it being on while in direct light. The premium feel and large screen with small bezels made it a fantastic device and I highly recommend it to anyone. Then again, you can't go wrong with a Kindle period.

I got the latest Paperwhite last week as a birthday present. Compared to my previous Kindle (the discontinued Voyage) it’s a bit bigger and heavier. I read in bed and I find the Paperwhite ever so slightly too big (and I have pretty big hands). I miss the page turn buttons, but not that much, since they were hit and miss at best. The new lighting system is a deal breaker for me: the warm light is SO MUCH BETTER at night. So even if size-wise, the Voyage was better, the reading experience on the Paperwhite definitely gets the upper hand. Also, it looks like Amazon stopped updating the Voyage (15.4 is at the time of writing still not available), so I guess out with the old, in with the new.

@evan.5967 my older kindle had page turning buttons and I loved it. It was easier than turning a page in a real book. My paperwhite 11 doesn't and it is simply a pain to use. It will only let me turn page on the right side. So if I am holding lefthanded my thumb can't really reach over there. With either hand, I often end up hitting the screen in not just the right way, making it go backwards or bring up a menu. This happens fairly often and I've been using it close to two years. I like my kindle oasis, so much, simply because it doesn’t have a huge chin on the bottom and there’s no logo on it. It looks so premium and I love the buttons. But one fatal flaw for me is how wide it is, it is no longer pocketable. I want the newest paper white because even if it has the logo and chin on the bottom, it still has a small enough size to fit in pockets. I almost left my oasis behind in public twice already because I can’t pocket it. The increased battery life on the paper whites is greatly appreciated as well.

I have an old Paperwhite (6. Generation) and I‘m still quite content with it. Battery life’s still great. Its 4GB storage is enough for me (if I ever come close to filling it, I could always delete read books from the storage as they stay in my Amazon account anyway). The only thing missing for me is the dark mode since my eyes are quite sensitive. But that‘s not worth spending the money for a new one. Sure the display and functionality is not up to the latest state of tech, but I don‘t mind. I think it‘s still quite nice to read on.
If the device will ever give up on me, I think I would update to the current Paperwhite signature edition.

One bad and apparently gratuitous change in the UI is there is no longer a "back" action to take you back to wherever you just were. Which is really useful in newspapers and magazines if you accidentally touch the link to skip to the next item. Now you have to manually page back which is a nuisance.

I think I’m on my 5th Kindle. Once again I’ve started experiencing power issues and am reading books on my phone. I had the original Oasis but found that it never accessed the extra battery, and ran out of power too fast, and the new WiFi prevented connecting by cellular- if it detected a WiFi signal, i could not use the cellular connection. Since I did not have permission to connect to the detected WiFi, this was a problem and I found myself trying to find parking lots with no WiFi so I could download books. I replaced the oasis with a paper white, and for the first time did not pay for the cellular feature. I use it with my phone hotspot when I need to. Since my paper white no longer reliably turns on or reboots with a full charge, I’ve been reading on my smart phone. Besides not being able to purchase books directly to an Apple device, now I’m struggling with reader highlights. There is no way to remove the highlights. When every word on screen is highlighted, it is really difficult to turn the page. They have removed page scrolling from the other device app, and the highlights extend into the right margins. Not my highlights, don’t know why everyone else made the highlights, no way to clear them to get them out of the way. The last bitch I have is that the paper white is also missing the rotation feature, manual or auto. Really annoying if I’m trying to read and charge at the same time. I used to just rotate the device so the cord came out of the top and was out of the way. I think their battery tests are bogus and don’t reflect actual use. Sorry to dump on you, but there is no real customer feedback possible.

My Kindle Oasis is 3 years old now and the battery is terrible, it requires a daily charge just to read for between 1-3 hours a night. My wife's Paperwhite is more than double that age I estimate and it has no battery issues at all. Plus the Paperwhites battery is fairly easy to replace from what I've seen, the Oasis is impossible to replace the battery without breaking the screen.
I'll be buying a Paperwhite soon, I'll miss my Oasis physically (I much prefer the chassis design vs the Paperwhite) but being unrepairable is a huge negative for me. The screen is still prefect and I've really looked after the Oasis but the battery is terrible, they should last longer than 3 years for £250.

As oasis 3 user and also got a new pw recently, the battery is actually pretty much better on new pw, but what I have thought of the new one is just extended battery life version pw4, I don’t appreciate the size becos it s a bit weighted even than oasis with case and it’s uncomfortable to hold by one hand. The screen is still grayish as the same, oasis3 is way more better on the screen and lighter. So the only big difference between pw5 and oasis 3 is battery imo.

However the Oasis screen had a lot of ghosting, like screen burn in, and the contrast didn't seem as good as the Paperwhite. I wish you had talked about one of the main features of the Oasis far more: One-handed reading, which is a big reason to get it. It's far easier to hold the Oasis with one hand and use the physical page-turning buttons, which is how I prefer to use it. One-handed reading is much more difficult on other Kindles because of the lack of those buttons and the uniform design (the lip on the Oasis makes it easier to grip).
Comparing battery life on Kindles is kind of pointless if you ask me. Either way, it's going to last you a very long time, even if you're a heavy reader like me, and you'll never have to worry about the battery running out mid-read unless you started the day at nearly empty battery.
