Steve, great video as always. I very much appreciate your description of the installation process, of the features and, especially, of hearing about the shortfalls of the product. When I am looking for guidance AND unbiased honesty, I know I can get this from your reviews! Thanks as always! I do have a question, though: I'm concerned about security and worry that someone can buy some kind of gadget that will allow them to overwrite codes and unlock the door. Maybe I have watched 24 too often, but it's enough of a concern that I'm thinking I would be safer with a digital keypad lock without smart features. Of course, I would love to have those smart features. But I am concerned. Please tell me your thoughts and recommendations. I know no lock will be perfect, but is there a smart lock protocol that you would consider very secure?

Hey EZ, I was about to tell you that MyQ doesn't support locks and cameras BUT, i opened the app and i see that they actually do. haha However, it doesn't look like MyQ supports video doorbells. But digging a little further, it looks like you can control your MyQ garage door through the Ring app. Also Ring can manage a smart lock if it's Z-Wave compatible. So it looks like the Ring app is the way to go for what you're looking for.

Yale Locks (all) .. no door closing detection. What that means is your door can extend the deadbolt with the door open and the second that you slam the door closed you can damage the door. August has "DoorSense" .. which is simply a magnetic switch like an alarm on a door or window.
Our Yale (Nest x Yale) is programmed to auto lock after 5 minutes. You wouldn't think door closure to be a problem but it is; one mistake and you're repainting part of your front door.

I've had the August Pro door lock installed for 3 years and am planning to replace it with this Yale Assure Touchscreen lock.
I have an August door lock, used with an August Doorbell and Keypad. I had to replace the original August door lock under warrantee due to sticky mechanical issues where the bezel would rotate part way and then get stuck. The replacement August door lock has been working well for 2 years. Note: I took it apart and added a drop of gun oil on the large metal gear. This fixed the sluggish mechanical friction issue with the new lock. August should lubricate their lock gears at the factory.
But the August Keypad has recently become unreliable. Even with new batteries, my family now have to re-enter their code 2 or more times to get the lock to open. I'm not sure what's gone wrong with the keypad. I suspect it has worn out. But I've had enough...
Then there is a separate issue with our August doorbell. I love the design, but it keeps falling off the wifi network. I contacted August support but they said my doorbell is beyond the 1 year warrantee. And they've stopped manufacturing the August doorbell, I suspect because of the WiFi connectivity issues. I've read a story that claimed August used a chipset designed for low power consumption, for WiFi that turned out to have connectivity issues that can't be solved without a redesign, replacing that chip.
I've followed all of their instructions about removing and adding the doorbell back onto the wifi network, several times. And I moved it to the Guest wifi network and added instructions in my router to only offer the doorbell a wifi connection on the 2.4 GHz band and never the 5 GHz band, which seems to have helped. But it is unreliable after several years. I'm considering a Nest doorbell in my future, as a replacement.
Something about all this has me loosing confidence in the quality of August Home products.
One thing I'm wondering with the Yale Assure with "CBA" - "Connected By August", is whether I'll be able to integrate with SmartThings so that the inside lights come on when the door opens. I can do this today because the August lock supports Bluetooth, Wifi and Z-Wave Plus. The new Yale (CBA. Connected By August) lock lacks Z-wave support. But this is a small detail and I can fix it by installing a zigbee door sensor if I have to. It would just be cool if the new lock can signal Smarthings to turn on the hall light all by itself.
I'm also wondering if I will be able to remount my August lock on the back door and install the new Yale lock on the front door, and control them both from the same August smartphone app. I'm not sure if the Yale branded version of the app will support the legacy August lock that also include z-wave. Or conversely, whether the August branded app will be able to control the new Yale Assure lock. Time will tell.
A nice feature of the August connection technology is that the lock uses bluetooth to connect to my iPhone and to the August Connect wall wart. This provides power efficiencies because Bluetooth (and Z-Wave and especially Zigbee) use less energy and aren't as "chatty" on the network as WiFi. So batteries last longer. The lock transmits and receives Bluetooth. The "Connect" wall wart converts Bluetooth to WiFi and use house current to power the wifi signal. Newer August locks now are available with the wifi transmitter built into the lock itself. But I suspect this convenience is at the expense of longer battery life.
One thing is certain, I like the August smartphone app and want to buy a Yale lock so that I can keep using it. Door sense, auto locking and unlocking, geo-fencing, cell phone as a key, it all works wonderfully when it works, but hide a key outside just in case.

I'd love to hear actual battery life. What kept me from getting one for a while it's all the reviews taking about how much they go through batteries. Really surprised none have a larger rechargable.

I would assume it's going to be how much you use the touchpad and control it through the app. I'd say on average we're using it once a day. I'll try to remember to report back when i finally have to replace the batteries. :)

@@SteveDOES any update on the batteries steve? I’m trying to find a suitable replacement since the august lock has been great to use but undependable through extreme temperature and failing on lock and failing on the keypad. Had to replace the hardware twice already and the Schlage zwave has failed finally also.
