I've listened to this song a thousand times but tonight is the first night the play on words she made clicked to me. I always knew the "Ba mi-dele" pun which means "follow me home". However, I only just realized her possibly intended pun on her protagonist's name i.e. "Akinyele" a Yoruba name meaning "this house gains from valor". In this case, "A-kin-ye-le" meaning "one does not avoid family or home". Since he didn't want to follow the Yoruba tradition of meeting the woman's parents and paying the bride price.

I like that she sings in Yoruba. This is how languages are empowered-sing in your language, write in it make movies in it, read the news in it, teach it in the schools and universities. Language is irrevocably tied to identity. For Africa to find it's place in the world it must embrace it's languages as is done in China, Korea, India, Malaysia etc.

We are even fortunate to still have the language of yoruba in our midst.never allow your language to fade away.english is the language of the slave masters. We where not suppose to be speaking English.just as China and Asia keeps the language the customs their constitutes laws and religion so should we. When language changes so does the mindset.

THE ACTUAL MEANING VERSUS THE ACTUAL LYRICS
    ACTUAL MEANING
Akinyele made many promises to the girl, impregnated her (low back pain and flu like symptoms) and still promised to marry her at the registry . Perhaps, Akinyele used bride price as an excuse, but the girl tired of Akinyele's suspicious ways, insists that he must follow her to her parent's house that day. The greatest assurance in Yoruba culture is the traditional introduction of an husband to be, to the family of the wife to be. Men don't do this unless they are really ready to marry.
    ACTUAL LYRICS
Bi'nu e ba dun, bi'nu e o ba dun (Whether you are happy, or not)
On' lati bami dele (You need to follow me home)
Bi o ba fe, bi o ba ko ye (Whether you like it, or you refuse to)
On' lati bami dele ba'mi (You must follow me to my father's house)
    Akinyele wants to marry wife
He don't want to pay some bride price
    You better find it
    Akinyele omo Jinadu (Akinyele Jinadu)
He don't want to pay some bride price
    You better find it
    Akinyele o... (x8)
Otutu mu mi/ eyin nro mi o (Cold has taken hold of me/my back aches)
Wa bamidele ba'mi (Come, follow me to my father's house)
Sebi the same thing lo so fun mi l'ana (Wasn't it the same thing you told
    Me yesterday?)
Mo tun de/ wa tele mi mo'le (I'm here again/ come, follow me home!)
    Lawyer alagidi (Stubborn Lawyer!)
    First class liar
Alakori sanwo k'o to j'obe (Headstrong fellow, pay before you 'chop' soup)
Iya mi l'o bi mi, l'o bi mi (My mother gave birth to me)
Baba mi lo to mi (My father trained me)
Mi o ki'n s'omo registry (I'm not for registry wedding)
    Alakowe lawyer (learned lawyer)
    Akinyele o... (x8)

OOHH MY, ASA!!! BBEEAAUTTIIFUL!!! THERES NEVER A DULL MOMENT WITH YOU MUSIC, BEAUTY!!!
I think the meaning is not to be taken for face value... we just scratch a little deeper... in my opinion the interpretation can be of many meaning... the ones that came to mind are...
    1) a young lady who is all she should be to her man hhhmm "wife material" so in a sense its a plea of "do right by me" or "make an honest woman out of me", marry me... her lyrics go on to say "my mother bore me, mt father taught me" so I know better and in sense saying I know my worth so I know what I deserve... "professional liar, lawyer", you promised all these things but they have yet to come to pass
    2) She is already married and the husband, "the professional liar, lawyer" takes her for granted.. as her lyrics say again... "my mother bore me, my father taught me" so I know my worth and I know better so "do right by me".
Just a little background info... in the Nigeria culture, as she mentioned "Ba mi dele" (come home with me) in thr figurative sense, when a couple got serious and it looked like marriage was on the horizon, the man would have to come SERIOUSLY correct to the lady's parents... what his intentions are, who his is, where's he's from etc etc etc. And in ancient times lol, there would be mention of a"bride price," where you are coming to take my daughter what are you willing lay down for her... in some places it was as if it were a business transactiom almost like selling of properties, like purchasing a uumm "maid" (theres really no other way for me to put it *shrugs*) but this took place in more hhmm "rural" areas.
In other cases, less primitive its moreso a way of saying "you have come to the garderners to pick a rare flower from our garden now what will you do to collect such a precious flower dear to us"... i can say today we uphold this particular ideology abd continue because its an important piece of our culture that portrays the value placed in the worth of the Nigerian woman... "her mother bore her, her father taught" so comes from a unique stock, she knows her worth so does her man recognize it and cherish it... This is I believe the TRUE message of the song BUT hey what do I know!!! ;-)

      @adewaleaadesanya Před 10 lety +20

Empress you are very much on point.. but just to elaborate a little more on one of the many very important points the song touches on. Yoruba is a culturally intricate- and wonderfully tonal- language, so there are things which will be missed; if one is not familiar with the language and know it within the given cultural context, you certainly will not be in receipt of the full narrative..
"Akinyele", put simplistically is the name of her love interest in the song.. BUT the meaning of Akinyele is "a home deserves honour or deserves to be honoured". If the home deserves to be honoured, then that honour must first come with honouring your future wife, the woman of the house. if all the things that are required to be done culturally, ethically and morally are not respected and done before she agrees to be marry him, then their home is based on an empty foundation lacking honour; and where there is no honour there could never have been any respect..
Asa constantly repeats the name "Akinyele".. In so doing she is asking and reminding him to honour her by respecting her person, her family and her culture and that by so doing, he will be honouring himself and their home..

Paying the bride price is not like purchasing a "maid", it is a sign of appreciation. It doesn't always come in the form of money. Bride price is still very much a part of the Nigerian culture, it also takes place in "urban" areas, not just rural areas.

Listening in 2020 after a horrible year. Anything from Ass gives beauty. Woke up with the song on my mind and deduced to see if it has a video. Asa is the best in this music business. The BEST.
Wishing all listeners a beautiful 2021.
