The new XSR900 reminds me of the original, garage built, naked bikes of the 90s. Like the dropped and re-born Thundercat 600s sans plastics we’d see back then. With the chunky delta-box frame exposed. If that is the look they are going for, I reckon that’s a successful and refreshing take on the retro bike.

I think the seat hump on the 900 was inspired by the seat hump on the XS750 and 850 triples from the 70s and 80s. The 700’s seat hump also slightly resembles the seat hump on the XS650

Well both the XSR 900 and XSR 700are great options in their respective format. In terms of design both bikes looks superb although i prefer the XSR 700. The XSR 900 looks good but it doesn't do quite well with rear seat design. Personally i prefer the straight seat of the XSR 700.
Performance wise both bikes are good. The 72 bhp of the XSR 700 is plenty enough power for Enjoying in the city as well as on the highway.
Overall both the XSR 700 and 900 are great retro machines, and my choice is the XSR 700 👍.

Amazing comparison! I think you nailed it with this one! I own the previous XSR900 and my GF owns a XSR700. Now I would not say that the power of the 900 is intimidating but it is serious power. If you are looking for a bike for cruising, the 700 is the better option. If you like it sporty, the XSR900 will do the better job - event more with the new version. Plus the "heritage blue" color scheme would be a Nr. 4 reason to get the 900 alone ;-)

To be fair. The XSR700 gets recommended for beginner riders so often. But after a year of having my license I regret not going for the 900. I wish I had more power. I still love my 700 and I will probably keep this for a couple of more years. But my advice to a beginner is to just buy want you want to buy in the first place. I wish I did not listen to all the people saying the 900 is not a beginner bike. It's BS. You'll learn to ride what you buy no matter what.

  • @johndoe3485

My one and only issue with these bikes is the seats. They should of made it a flat bench seat. Or the ability to remove the back part and add a metal frame that is 100% horizontal flat for a bench seat. Its just more better with that style seat. But the seats on both is the ONLY reason i cant get this bike. The old scramblers from the 1970's had the flat seat im talking about, a bunch of the custom cafe racers, the builders use the flat bench seat im talking about. The only modern bike that makes the closest to a flat bench seat is the Triumph Scrambler 900, but its an optional seat they sale, and its not the perfect 100% horizontal flat that i need. But its close enough. It slightly rises up towards the last very back of it by like maybe 5% incline. But this yamaha 709 i love, but that seat stops me. Let me tell u how much i have to have a pure flat seat, the only CURRENT modern bike that has the flat seat i need, its a scooter. The BMW CE04 , they sale the optional 100% pure flat seat. But real talk, that scooter is would have to buy just because its like they made that seat just for me. I mean its literally the ONLY two wheel vehicle that has a 100% flat bench seat that i need. So until a bike manufacturer makes a flat bench seat for there motorcycle, then i cant by any of them. Im just built different then most people. And i have to have a bike with a 100% flat bench seat. So BMW are the lucky ones to get my money for now. ✌️

I have a 2018 XSR 700, and with a Termignoni pipe on it, it sounds amazing. It would be nice at some point if there was a larger displacement version of the CP2 engine, because I just love the sound of a good rumbly twin. I think the XSR700 has a nicer looking frame than the new XSR900. That is one thick slab looking frame on the XSR900, its good they reduced the seat height. Having said all that, the XSR700 only comes restricted in OZ, and at seat height of 835mm, both are deal breakers. XSR900 is a maybe, but probably with that sort of power it will be a death wish for me, lol. A cheaper SV650 might be the winner, for me, lol. On looks though, I'd take an XSR over the SV650.

Love the looks of both, but very happy w my '21 MT07, after improving suspension & front brakes. I don't miss TC much, since the stock Roads 5s stick well, wet or dry. Did the XSR700 get all the updates the '21 MT07 got? Is the XSR700 seat more comfy than the MT07 seat? If Yamaha releases colors, other than black, for the US market, I'm thinking most of my bolt ons would transfer....pipe & suspension, at least. Probably leave the SS lines and EBC pads on the front, for the next owner. :) The power specs on the 900 are close to my '14 FZ09, and '21 KTM 890 AdvR. Those bikes proved more than I needed, on the street. The TC system on the KTM, especially, made it easy to get over-confident, and over 100mph, quickly. If the TC system on the 900 works anywhere near as well as the '16 R1 I had as a track bike, I'd probably struggle keeping risk down on public roads, as well.....And that's with 45 years of moto experience ;)

@@fabianb.7071 If you need to rely on technology as a beginner rider to keep you from wrecking the bike, you might not be on the right bike. The 700 likely doesn’t have an IMU because it probably doesn’t need one since it’s placed in the entry level market and is therefore more approachable for newer riders.

Is the ride-by-wire throttle really so slow on XSR 900? I mean at 6:04 it sounds really delayed when you twist the throttle. Not a good sign for quick downshifts..

I didn’t want the high power 09 engine nor all the tech. However the MT07, which I bought, has a bad seat. If I’d tried the XSR07 and found it more comfortable then I would have bought one instead of the MT, which is a good bike in all respects apart from long-range comfort.

MT07(or XSR700) is too much for beginners. You really start to learn how to ride when you reached the limit of your engine.
When going fast isn't that big of a deal anymore and you start to break later and harder, start to corner better and be more precise and efficient at riding a bike.
You can start on an MT07 but it's harder to drive it to it's limits on public roads.(not advisable)

@@nuh2ndbr466 well it's much more powerfull as the mt07, so yes. Here is why: it takes some time you get how a bike works, it is a sensory overload.
In Europe you can get some big bikes that are restricted, if that option is available where you live, then sure buy your dream bike. Later you can take out the restriction end enjoy the bike as it was intended.

Have you noticed the "new" pretty ugly new cable routing in the cockpit of the XSR700? That really bugs me. Beside that the price hike Yamaha did last 12 month i think the XSR700 now is a little too expensive. Concrete examples: MT09 -> XSR900 upprice of 550 Euros. MT07 -> XSR700 upprice of 900 Euros. Where the XSR900 has cruise control over the MT09, the XSR700 has no extras towards the MT07. If you think about what the XSR900 has "more", a list: CP3 enginge, USD forks adjustable, better brakes, Brembo maste cylinder, e-Gas, cruise controll, riding modes, TFT-Screen, slipper-clutch, adustable rear suspension. All this for ~ 2.300 Euros more.
In my believe the XSR700 should get at least a slipper clutch now, maybe even USD forks - and for sure it should cost 400-500 Euros less.
