Yamaha XSR700 and XSR 900 Long-Term Review | Beyond the Ride

  • When you're shopping for your next bike, consider the XSR series from Yamaha. With the 155 out of the question for highway legality, which of the two big XSRs do you go for? The XSR 700 or the XSR 900? It's a good thing there are two long-term owners of the XSR 700 and XSR 900, Marc Nelson, and our very own host, Jinno Rufino. On this episode of Beyond the Ride, we'll tackle several of the long-term pros and cons of both bikes, as well as the quirks, features, and mods that came with being a long-time owner of Yamaha's premier neo-retro offerings in the Philippines. Oh, and also consider this a bit of a mini-comparo of the two bikes as well!

I restored an 1983 Yamaha XJ750 midnight Maxim, best ride I've ever had. Been debating getting the XSR 700 for the exact reasons you specify in this vid - reliability, cost and performance. Big selling point for me is the weight reduction from my XJ at 238kg to the XSR only 185kg. Great honest review guys.

That was my first bike 12 or so years ago. The beginning of a real addiction.
I've still got very fond memories of that bike. Enormous fun miles. 15,000kms a year
I sure don't ride like that any more.

I borrowed an XJ750 for a couple of weeks. Yamaha really got it right with that model. Yes, they're heavy but they carry the weight down low which is confidence inspiring. The best part of all was that it was shaft drive. I know that they are expensive to produce and they add a bit of weight but why
manufacturers aren't using them on mid sized bikes these days is beyond me. No chain and sprockets to replace, no adjustment and the rear end of the bike not covered in chain lube is just to appealing for me.

First time viewer. Very nice comparison. I've been having this struggle for a few months between the two. Then, you throw in all the new stuff that the 900 has, and it makes you wonder if the old one is worth it. The weight, and insurance rate should be about the same. Weirdly, fuel economy might be where I pick the 7 over the 9.

This is just my personal nitpicking
To me Yamaha kinda miss an opportunity with XSR line, they only provide 900, 700, and 155 which is kinda weird bcs to some people's 155 can be bit too small while 900 is too big while 700 look a bit challenging. Like i want them to give middle ground like around 250-400cc displacement it can become a good bike for beginner/2nd bike
I have few other bike including XSR 700, but i need light bike for daily commute around city and something that my wife can ride without feeling intimidated so i tried 155 but i felt like it lacking power a bit, yes to many ppl 155cc can be enough specially in Asia (I know bcs i live in Japan), but still i feel it's not quite enough bcs i live in around mountain area so in the end i get svartpilen 200 a nice bike with enough power but not too much so my wife can ride it without feeling intimidated by too much power

The 700 is a pretty forgiving bike if you have any familiarity with riding. I started on the 700 and it's been a blast. The throttle is predictable, the bike is easy to throw around. The only things I dislike is the stock tires are a bit wonky and not confidence inspiring, and the stock exhaust sucks. I don't think I'd go down to a 400 or 300, but to each their own.

    • @papanga1197
      @papanga1197 Před 2 lety

@@salsamancer the similarities for me is not only with the bike but also with its target market:
      - Both from reliable Japanese brands
      - Both relatively big (literally)
      - Both are like "entry level mayaman" stuff. You know someone riding this is a bit well off
      - Both desirable
      - Both kinda capable off road and luxurious at the same time
      - Challenging european luxury brands for the money and what they offer
      Etc etc
The Land Cruiser is not the best off-roader out there. Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, Land Rover Defender, FJ Cruiser, etc. They're there. Its not also the most luxurious because there's the Rolls Royce Cullinan, the BMW X5 or even the Benz GLS. It is a good mix of all of it though.
Like the XSR. It's not the fastest for riding. You have the race bikes for that. Not also the most comfortable as you can have the high-end ADVs out there to challenge it. It's a good mix though.

I own a XSR900 2020 model. This bike is awesome and the engine is a real gem. It is a very light bike too. 2022 model is nice but engine does not look so nice: hoses, cables and some parts with different painting. I am sure that Yamaha will fix this, so I would wait to the new update of the current XSR900. The 700 looks nice too but there are many differences versus the 900: less electronics, steel frame, much worse suspension and a nice engine but not that three cylinder rocket. The difference between a three cylinder and a two cylinder engine is notable. The step is bigger than the difference between a single and a two cylinder engine. However, the XSR700 is a pretty nice and affordable bike.

I think yamaha ran out these backward switches and stopped using them in north america a couple years ago.

Motodeal, can you clarify the rules regarding bar end mirrors? I understand that the regulations say that at least 3 inches wide and so long as you have 2 mirrors, you're pretty much good. But here in Cebu, some traffic officials are conflicted with each other. The HPG are cool with bar ends, the LTO personnel are a hit and miss scenario. Thank you! Great looking bikes

I think we can't do anything about it. LTO Regional 7 Director Caindec said that as long as you side mirror (does not matter what it is), you're good to go. Pero naa gihapon mga wala'y klaro.

12:00 quadlock is still damaging your phone. Its just takes way longer to actually brake your camera because it is indeed a lot less vibration.

same thing with yamaha tfx 150 the horn button is really akward ..most of the time your likely to press the signal light button.

I test rode both, had my heart set on the xsr900. Much prefer the 700. Ended up buying the XTribute. Sounds better, more agile and has much better power control. 900 is like a R1 without fairing. Pointless bike in my opinion.

3:34 is it a STOCK seat? It's not SOFT. Ah ok, maybe that's why ... 😁. Nice comparison. Good to hear the long term experiences. Thanks.

I have to agree with the horn button placement - it is terrible. I have 2020 Mt03 and it have the same horn placement and it is very difficlut to reach and rememebr where it is. It should be under indicator switch - as in all bikes! :D

Really excited for the new model of the xsr900 specially with the new electronic features, but im still torn between choosing the xsr900 or xsr700 (dont get me wrong , i love the xsr900, but somehow the xsr700 is kinda calling my name). Both an amazing bike!
