Our government has been warned year after year, we've definitely seen an increase in hot weather and drought over the past few years, particularly in the country side, but never as devastating as this. But as Chel said, Scott Morrison went on a holiday after our crisis had peaked, and even went so far as to say that our volunteer firefighters, which is majority of the people fighting our fires at the moment, wanted to be there. These people have been crowd funding for their own gear due to lack of support from the government

The Australian green party has managed to win a court case that banned backburning (an aboriginal tradition that exsisted for 60 thousand years, and was definitely a working ecosystem because of the land scape colonialists discovered back in 1700s, but this tradition has mostly fallen out of practice since most of the land is owned by the white man). And since we didn't take preventative measures during winter to burn most of the vegetation off, the fires gets more fuel to burn.

This is a narrative being put out by right wing politicians like Barnaby Joyce to try and distract attention away from them. @@QarthCEO Australia have not reduced fire control management in the scope of a legislative move as many people are claiming. However there are 2 factors that are impacting the ability to perform controlled burns. It's climate factors and funding factors
      1) The window for being able to perform hazard reduction burns keeps getting smaller and smaller, Queensland have only been able to perform about 50% of planned burns within the last 4 years
      2) Funding to the fire services (which are state run) have been seen. The labor government in QLD cut their fire funding by 13 million this year, NSW by 100 Million. These services generally recieve approximately 500 million or so dollars of state funding, so in the case of NSW, almost a 20% cut in funding. Data for Victoria is older but saw a slight increase in 2017.
Also, if the look at the absolute shitshow the Liberal government in NSW has caused with the murray-darling basin and the drought affects this has placed upon NSW especially, and then downstream to states like VIC, it's pretty clear this reduction is a fuckup by state and federal Liberal governments, hence why Scott Morrison is being attacked, and rightfully so.

Thank you so much for covering our fires. This is so wonderfully accurate and a nice change to see from all the misinformation that is out there. The fires are the size of France and we have lost 9 billion trees! I'm part of ARC a wildlife collective and will be transporting much needed medical supplies into the area this week end. I'm hoping to do a video on the trip and show the wonderful generosity of not only Australians but people around the world. Firstly I would like to thank the Canadian firefighters for coming here when the fires were early on and staying over Christmas, missing this time with their families to put out our fires. We have since had firefighters from NZ and the US. The particulate is actually worse than cigarette smoke because it's less than 5microns and damages the surfactant on the alveoli causing not only respiratory issues but heart attacks. We've had horrendous smoke here in Melbourne and worse in Sydney and now there are reports of smoke in South America. Give your donations to any of the fire organisations, CFA or RFS, Red Cross, animal organisations ARC, Wildlife Victoria, Wires. I've done one video on the fires and will likely do more. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart xx

Thanks for this video guys. As a young Australian living close to where these bushfires are and having many loved ones in the affected areas, it is disappointing as the people who can make a difference, our politicians, ignore things like this and ignore the warning signs and don't act on the advice and data provided to them. I am truly ashamed of this country's leaders as they say they will act on the Australian population's needs, but they never seem to pull through on their promises.
Please, whoever you are reading this, please help us. Help by donating to the charities and services linked in this video's description so we can survive this. "If we all give a little, it will add up to a lot." This quote has always proven true. So please. And to those who cannot donate, we thank you all for the kind thoughts and prayers sent our way.

As someone who lives in a par of the country on the coast, these fires were actually terrifying. In my area they started as early as June/July and escalated very quickly. Less than 100 children attended school out of the 600 in November and our annual horse races were cancelled half way through, due to the jockeys not being able to see and the horses having respiratory issues. Friends of mine had to put their family’s number on their horse and let them run free. My stepfather’s friend was protecting his house and couldn’t hear his own dogs burning to death over the sound of the flames. My best friends father was out fighting these fires and was sometimes only given water and a nut bar for lunch, after working through the night and day. Our government did such a horrible job of handling this and I was honestly disappointed. If you stuck around till the end thank you. For caring months after the fires got out of hand.

the mental health part of the video could've been bigger, IMO. the attitude for us aussies is that "she'll be right mate" in the face of extreme adversity like this. there is a tendency to never seek help for mental health issues because it's often seen as a weakness. we need to also work on removing the stigmas around mental health so that people who are at the forefront of these horrible experiences get the help they deserve.

bigpapadrew definitely feeling that. The lack of acknowledgement that climate change is not only real but man made is bad enough, but when you talk to family and friends and they DO acknowledge that this is a problem but have the attitude of “she’ll be right mate” or “I can’t do anything so why try” is part of the problem as well. Especially for mental health in those that are trying and feel like taking to brick walls when discussing the issues.

The fires hit us 2 weeks ago when I was in Mallacoota (remote coastal town in Vic). The out of control blaze started too close to the one road into the town, so no one could get in or out. We found out that the wind would change and the fire would come for us. 10 hours of waiting for the fire to find us. Anxiety. 4000 people were on the beach while we watched the fire ravish the town. Locals find out that their houses have burnt, animals have died. Distraught. 9am and the sky is pitch black. 9:15 and the sky is blood red. Asthmatic, I can't breathe, need steroid injection quickly. Running out of food. Can't get aid into the town, smoke is too thick for aircraft. Evacuation by navy ship to Melbourne.

I personally have been forced to leave home 3 times including Black Saturday where my house was saved by a wind change with 10 mins to spare. Our education has moved to encourage more and more families to plan to leave. Most people around my community have now moved to an attitude of viewing fires as a when not an if. Most families have planned locations to go if evaluated and the family documents and limited belonging stored in one place at all times encase they have to go.

Similar to the Hiroshima atomic bomb that still has it's effects through radiation, this might have ongoing effects in generations to come (respiratory/lung cancer etc)

I live in Perth Australia and thank you for raising awareness! I’m very fortunate that Perth has not been affected by the brunt of these fires as they are in the Eastern States, however it is heartbreaking to see this beautiful country burn and people animals losing their lives and homes. As of writing this, there’s a bushfire that has started in Perth in a suburb called Baldivis and the smoke is very strong! Broome is also recovering from Cyclone Bruce and Rockingham have fires too. It’s scary but fascinating is a way how one side of Australia is burning, while one side is flooding. I hope rain comes soon, thank you once again for raising awareness! 🇦🇺

It's truly devastating as to what is happening in our country, but it's people like you who are spreading awareness who will make an impact. We have been breathing in smoke since September, some days it almost feels like we are in the movie The Mist...it feels suffocating. I suffer from asthma so it's even worse. I pray that our country heals and no more lives and homes are taken. Please pray for us.

I wish I believed in God. I want the belief that someone will save us. I want to pray. I want this to stop.
Your videos make a difference. Thank you so much x

Aussie based in Melbourne. Thanks for the balanced coverage guys. There's been so much media hype and hyperbole especially on social media.
In September (spring) driving through rural and farming areas in the S.E (Vic & NSW) I was surprised to see that everything then was dry and brown when it's usually lush and green. With only the two eyeballs that God has blessed me with I could see that we could be in for a very bad fire season. These are where some of the biggest and worse fires have been in the last two weeks.
Last week (New Years) I was in Canberra (our national capital) and for many consecutive days visibility was down to maybe 200-300m due to smoke from the fires in the Australian Alps and Victoria's Gippsland region 100s of kms to the south.
Please know that we are very thankful for the support that is being offered from around the globe and from countries like Canada and the USA who are sending teams of fire-fighters to help and relieve the local teams (I have friends who are fire-fighters).
The ecosystem/ecology here bounces back pretty quickly, but the effect of families and the economy here will be felt for at least a decade.

Meanwhile, where I am (Northeast US) it’s snowing hard yet only from one cloud-the rest of the sky is blue.
We can end global climate change, though. But a global challenge needs a global response... and global unity.

I would love to have some of that snow here in Finland. It's already January and no permanent snow has fallen to the capitol region. You have to go quite a bit further north to get decent amount of snow for, for example, crosscountry skiing. 😔

The fires were started by arsonists. Over 200 have already been arrested. That and not letting people do controlled burns means plenty of fuel for the flames. Climate change is a bunch of bullshit and raising taxes won't change the weather anyway.

As someone who lives in Australia, I feel as if it hasn’t got as much media attention as it should (overseas). When the amazon was on fire, everyone knew about it and donated, or at least, spread the word through social media. The Australian fires are waaaaay worse (aka the worst fire to have existed) then the Amazon’s and only *now* have America sent firefighters to help with it, ofc I’m grateful for it, but it should have been sent sooner, which would have made it under control. Please spread the word and more importantly, donate. So many people have lost their homes and over 1 BILLION native and near extinct animals like koalas have died due to it. ❤️

Thankyou for making a video about this. Recognition from around the world is the only way our government is going to listen to us and put measures in place to prevent wild fires of this scale from happening again.
It's easy for we Australians to lose hope that this season will end but when I see information like this being spread around the world in a factual, serious manner I feel comforted that some people are seeing us and listening to our cries for help.
    Thanks guys 💛🇦🇺
