Right? When River waves and then slowly disappears...I could cry for hours..If only we could freeze time just for those special beings that come visit us for a short while, just to show us what we are missing, what a human potential could be...but for some reason only visits this earth once in hundreds of years....and then waves and disappears...leaving us in tears...
Rest in Peace River and Ben. This will be my favorite movie forever and it is no doubt Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman and Jerry O'Connell's best film. Such a beautiful classic. This kinda movie and song come along only once a generation.

I mean I'm 17 and i watched it a long time ago, but just the leeches part when i watched tv. 5 days ago I watched it all. It became my fagorite movie of all times. Im so sorry for childhood and everythong, this movie is just the best movie ever.

@Marianne this is one of my all time favourite movies and I was coming of age when this movie came out in the 80’s and I can honestly say it resonated then and still does as a much older man. The story, the adventure, the music and the laughs make it timeless.

Movie and story and the music

The first instance I can recall of the song “Stand By Me” being used in a film is in ‘The Wanderers’, a very effective scene, and I’m sure I didn’t appreciate this video when it was new, what with the “mashup” of this then-25 year old song and the 80s-MTV-video generation, looking back, and of course we have lived with what happened to River that Halloween night for almost 30 years now, sigh… But “Stand By Me” is just a great song and recording, it’s utterly timeless, as is it’s sentiment, and using it as the title to a movie that was made from a story called ‘The Body’ seems brilliant to me now. Because the story isn’t only about a child’s “fall” From innocence…it’s about change - terrifying change - and feeling very alone in a cruel world.
For me, while the ending is sad, honest, thought-provoking, the most poignant line appears right at the beginning of the film:
“ Vern didn't just mean being off limits inside the junkyard, or fudging on our folks, or going on a hike up the railroad to Harlow. He meant those things, but it seems to me now it was more and that we all knew it. Everything was there and around us. We knew exactly who we were and exactly where we were going. It was grand. “
I feel like - and this is my interpretation or whatever - “The Writer”, when he states this line, is implying that, just like he “never had any friends later on in life like I had when I was twelve”, he’s never been as “sure” of anything again after finding the body, which is the likely reason - or at least one of the reasons - he “never had any friends” like what he’d shared with those three boys at that age. After that, “life” got complicated.
That world of Boys was Simple. The world of Adults is treacherous and complicated. Life is lived, mostly, between the ears. It’s how we interpret what we see, that changes as we age…
