  • NEW YORK, June 29, 2012 - This is the fifth in a series of exclusive video interviews with veteran journalist Dan Rather, former anchor of CBS Evening News, who visited Asia Society Studios in New York City in late June. Rather, 80, currently hosts the investigative news magazine Dan Rather Reports [Facebook | Twitter], which airs on AXS TV. Rather's memoir, Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News, came out in May.
    In the segment embedded above, Rather discusses the biggest changes that have occured in Asia during his time covering the region. "If you had told me," Rather said, "as late as the 1980s, that China's economic growth would be what it has become, I would've said, 'I don't think you know Asia very well, or perhaps you're smoking something very expensive.' It caught me by surprise, and the same with India."

    One of the KEY reason of China's rise is its unique political system, coined by Professor Daniel Bell as "Vertical Democratic Meritocracy". It is a far superior political system when compared to western style democracy because only the most capable leaders can climb to the top position through decades of training and practicing, when in any western style democracy, "anyone can become the president". Due to this solid foundation of many highly capable public servants occupying all the key public offices, the Chinese government can make decade long term plannings and can execute them all without hinderance, hence the amazing rise to power in such a short time. By the way, there is no lack of freedom in China either. Visit China, and you will find out for yourself.

      there is little democracy in china, some positions at town and county level are elective. but humanity gets along without democracy,* it is a rare creature. the current prc politiburo is functioning well, and seems to have good control over the lower levels of government. in every human society, power exercised without effective oversight is vulnerable to corruption, and the problem is well-known in china. xi jin ping has recently made himself president of everything and for life. it may be his attempt to control corruption, i think this is quite possible. only a temporary solution, of course. and perhaps the cancer is already established- his brother-in-law featured in the 'panama papers' scandal.
      expecting perfection from any human society is foolish. for now, it is finally time for china to take its place in the sun. let's wish xi and his compatriots the best of luck.
      *there is no democracy,in nation states., aside from a limited version in helvetia. some american states have some or all. of the functions of democracy.

    Well said, Mr Rather! Hopefully going forward, the West will base their "judgement" of China securely based on facts and not ignorance anchored in unfounded prejudices! One needs to learn about China from the inside, and, not from the outside looking through one's own blurred vision through prejudicial assumptions. One talks about reading behind the lines. To understand China and Chinese, one needs to learn to read BEHIND the lines.

    I think one of the powerful reasons for China's rise that has been constantly overlooked can be attributed to the "cultural revolution dividend".
    In fact the cultural revolution in China almost brought it to its knees. People suffered untold hardships. So it propels people to crave for prosperity, stability and peace.
    Hence, when you tell them there is a way to make money they will believe you and dive in never mind the communist ideology. They will endure very strict discipline and austerity in order to have a glimpse of hope of prosperity. They easily subscribe to the mindset of "stability trumps everything" even now as they had learned it the hard way through unspeakable turmoil of the cultural revolution. They understand and wholeheartedly accept that the only way for the country to go forward is through stability.
    As there is no alternative government in sight they will make do with the incumbent one so long as it can offer hope and actions. They will tolerate the inconvenience rallying behind it. That is how the CCP is able to gel the people into action.
    This strong coherence of views and galvanized strengths between the people and the CCP and the single-mindedness in the pursuit of money or prosperity produced a formidable synergy that delivered unbelievably explosive result that thrusts China forward.

    The best measurement of a country is standard of living of the average population. If the middle class is a minority that country will never be good. For a country to be good, the middle class must be the majority and it's standard of living must be reasonable. Does China have that characteristic? No. So it must not be a role model for anyone. And let's not forget the lack of freedoms and the Orwellian surveilance the communist state keeps on its subjects.

      @jvs333 Před 5 lety +1

      md86 you seem oblivious to the fact that in the past 30 yrs China has has risen 400 million of its citizens into the middle class. It also had to start from the impoverished nation it was under Mao. 40 yrs ago. Last year it graduated over 20 million young techies (engineers, scientists, technicians, programmers, etc) as of this year surpassed the US as the world’s largest economy, is the world’s largest producer of renewable energies, and the list goes on, leaving the US in the dust as far as preparing for the 21st century. Unless you e been to China you have no clue what an advance society it is. Makes the US look like a 1970s ghetto. China is the 21st century.
      As for freedoms and government oversight.. there way more just living freedoms in China than there is in the US. The time I spent in China I felt way more free and safe than I do in the US (I’m American not chinese). In China you don’t have cops driving around hunting people down for broken tail lights it turning without a blinker then interrogating you hoping they can have an excuse to act out the action cop fantasies. You don’t have doped up addict criminals assholes with guns roaming the streets

      @@jvs333 Im not american. I dont see the USA (and China) as the example to follow. If you think China is free i have to say you are out of your mind. You think China is only its big high tech cities. The majority of people lives in the impoverished country-side where there are constant protests for water, land and food that are met by military repression. You were just a tourist. Chinese government is very adept at keeping appearances... they clean out the big cities from undesirables, so that people like you are convinced of exactly the things you just said. I'll say no more.

    • @jvs333
      @jvs333 Před 5 lety +2

      md86 I traveled thru small towns and small cities in central China as well as the big modern cities. I never felt I was in any danger, yet there are cities and areas of cities I wouldn’t dare venture into in the US.
      I didn’t say China was perfect or free. I said I felt more freedoms than o did in the US, as for government surveillance we have that here in the US too.
      No country is perfect or free of bad things. My experiences traveling around in China were a good experience and would love to do it again. You tube is filled with videos of Americans living and working in China most say they’re having a good experience. Yes there are poor village country people, in the past 30 yrs China has lifted 400 million out of poverty and has created the world’s largest middle class and 100s of millions with university educations.
      Again no country nor government is perfect, but as a society and a people I admire what the Chinese have accomplished.
      It’s an amazing country

    歐洲人是最先想到知識可以推展到收獲利益,所以早在十八世紀就為了避免利益被不正當地刮分,就集聚高知識學者於一堂立了"專利法".
    在有這"專利法"之前,你不能說誰用誰的知識是盜竊行為.因為沒有法可做依據是盜竊行.為現在搞出知識產權,有這個法在,你複製別人的知識你就是盜竊行為.

    it is willed by God, seen it some years ago. it take the leap of technologies, to eclipse the mistakes that were made by the greedy wall streeters in gutting the American economy for profit, to spare America from plummeting into oblivion, the strategy of oil over abundance was employed,
    but it also benefited the Chinese and the indians, while rusia, Venezuela, and others that are not
    astute in planning a diversified economy stumbled. A concerted
    effort must be made to mobilize
    industrial production at peak efficiency, and technical strides made to restructure and manipulate the energy matrix,
