Peer pressure is the reason people have husbands, wives, children, jobs, degrees, cars, houses, etc that they never really wanted... Learn to be your own person.

Don’t follow other people. You don’t know how far they are in debt. The pictures won’t tell you that. Continue with your 401K and build your emergency fund. You will be happy at retirement. Pace your self. Watch out for charge cards, it’s a for profit business. It’s not for you.

I’m a travel RN for the past 4 years. I’ve seen nurses buying luxury cars, going on lavish vacations, etc. I stuck with my 2014 Honda Civic and paid off all my debt. Saved up for a house and now I finally bought my house. The next step is paying off this mortgage. I take pleasure in simple things. Just going outside for long walks and hikes, going to state and national parks. God has blessed me immensely 🙌🏽

What helped me a few years ago in my financial journey was joining a sousou
A sousou is when a group of people decides to set a certain amount of money each month in a pool or an account, for example, $100 a month. Each month , a person in that group gets to collect that amount. It can last 6 months to a year or more. Most last a year. The more people that join, the more money you get . Besides having a lump sum of money coming to you at once, that process teaches you responsibility as well.
This will help you to quickly save for an emergency fund. I did it for 6 years. Now, I no longer need to do it because I was able to save 6 months of emergency funds. I contribute that same amount, though, for myself, each month towards that emergency fund.

RN here.. only been in the field 5 years.
Let me just say, if you’re a nurse who lives paycheck to paycheck, you are obviously very bad at managing your money. The first few years after graduating and starting my career, I had to work my a** off, work OT, nights and weekends. I was focused on aggressively paying off debt and student loans. But it paid off. After 2 years I was able to become debt free by living within my means and not living the extravagant lifestyle some of my peers had begun. Now, I can say I feel comfortable. I’m able to max out my 401K and my Roth IRA every year, and have a fully funded 6 month emergency fund. Now my extra money is being invested into the market.
Anything is possible, guys. It’s not about the job, it’s the mindset. There are teachers and even janitors who make far less money than nurses who are wise and accumulate a lot of wealth!

Been a nurse since 2011, been a travel nurse since 2017. Seven figure net worth and 4 houses paid off. If there’s one advice I can give anyone it’s “live below your means”. The nice car, nice shoes, nice clothes, will only make you “happy” for a short time. Nothing bad about taking trips or vacations but you can do it the cheap and affordable way. My trips are flying to somewhere, hiking multiple trails, taking photos and sleeping in my rental car. I only spend 25% of my monthly income and the rest goes into the stock market or buying land.

Nurses like to compete with each other who has the best car, house or designer bags. One nurse bought a house that is almost $2 million in Cali. She is working 6 days sometimes 7 to pay for that house and her “lifestyle”. She is over 60 y old, her daughter with her 5 kids from different fathers also live with her so she is responsible for them too. I bought a little cheap townhouse as a single woman and I am ok with that. No student loan. I rarely travel while some of them are taking trips every 2-3 months.

I'm not a nurse but I'm a housekeeper at a hospital. I have to listen to all the bragging and people trying to out do each other. I had to listen to them brag about all the extra money they were making during the pandemic. Now comes the struggle because there's no more pandemic and no extra money. Not a lot of bragging going on now. They are all trying to pick up extra shifts. I paid off any extra debt I had which wasn't a lot a couple of weeks ago. Just because someone is a doctor or nurse doesn't mean they aren't low key struggling financially. I'm a housekeeper, no debt, peace of mind with a credit score over 800. I have blinders on. I don't care about what other people buy or have. I don't try to keep up with the Joneses because the joneses are most likely putting up a front. They should have been using all that extra pandemic money to pay off their student loans instead of buying houses and going on trips. When I hear them complaining about how expensive groceries and gas are I think to myself quit complaining you should have made better decisions with all the extra money you made. Respect to the nurses who made good decisions with their money and didn't waste it trying to outdo someone else. It's not worth it financially.

I’m just an lvn and never been a travel nurse. 2020 I bought 10 acres of land off savings, paid of my car then visited my home country after 10 years here. We have 5 teenagers and our meals are home cooked 97% all year round. As an immigrant I don’t understand how people can’t save money because for us we have to support our families back home and multiple extended families. I was once kicked out with my 2 year old and 8months pregnant. From that experience I vowed never to have less than 10k emergency fund.

Awesome a male nurse! My wife and I are 60 y/o I'm a retired firefighter from NJ with a pension. We always worked she will retire at 62 y/o. Two incomes living in NYC are much needed your wife could work P/T from home or Grandmom/caregiver could help. We have saved for 30 years. I would skip the 529 plan max your Roth 401 with target date funds set & forget it. We have always been frugal, not cheap. My daughter is 32 y/o married and has been a nurse for 7 years in med-surg/ICU at Jax Mayo. My son just turned 28 y/o still at home and finished nursing 1 & 2 pray he will graduate in the Spring 2025!

@@christinarach340 We did have about $750000 total in 529 plans for two. Because 529 plans may decrease financial aid. Plus my son is 28 y/o lives at home and works P/T at T Mobile he qualified for the Fed Pell Grant for Fall & Spring Nursing. However, most FA advisors recommend a 6-12 months emergency fund first, then you want your Roths to be fat as a thick until max, then pretax accounts 403,401,457. We learn this after the fact. We always stayed out of debt only a mortgage now debt-free since 2021.

I'm a Nurse as well MSN, FNP, RN. and when I graduated from school for the first four years every check was dedicated to student loan and I'm cleared as of 2017. I've learned through our my career that the Jones aren't me and I'm not them. I've budgeted and invested well and I don't have children but I'm married and he's in the medical field as well. Our income is strong together and we diversified well. We both went to a financial advisor and strategically implemented a family plan that's effective and sustainable. Living in NYC is very expensive and the financial struggles are real. Good luck to you Brotha...💯

I realized you can still have a happy life. I just learned to set budget aside for fun things. Whatever I don’t use I carryover the next month budget.

I understand, you don't want to pay the price for living a LIFE. On the other hand, you could be the cheap guy in the room who saves all his money with no relationship and no kids, which you probably wouldn't be able to withstand. No one wants to be the cheap guy, but you want to be more like him to maximize your economic potential and growth. Money isn't everything. You're doing fine for yourself. It's different for everyone. For me, I am the cheap guy in the room, because naturally I'm ASIAN and an INTROVERT - I really don't have an inherent strong sense of urgency to have children and FOMO/YOLO out on life to begin with. Know your personality type. At the end of the day, you are who you are.
