Hey guys! I'm Lisa Childs, welcome back! In this new video, I'll be sharing with you my honest thoughts on the Instant Pot Air Fryer vs a Pressure Cooker Air Fryer Lid. My lid is the Mealthy Crisp Lid but this video applies to the concept with any brand of air fryer lid such as the Instant Pot Duo Crisp, Mealthy Crisp Lid, Crock Pot Express Crisp, PowerXL Grill Air Fryer Combo, or Ninja Foodi 9-in-1 Pressure Cooker and Air Fryer.
A pressure cooker air fryer combo can be a good alternative to having two full appliances, but I'll tell you why I prefer one over the other and when you should buy an air fryer over an air fryer lid or vice versa. Air fryer lids are separate appliances that sit on top of your Instant Pot or pressure cooker and turns the Instant Pot into an air fryer.

My duo crisp InstantPot came with the air fryer. I'm older and the air fryer weighs a LOT! It cooked everything beautifully but I bought a Dash air fryer for about $75 that is what I use all the time for air frying. I still do my pork ribs in the instant pot with that air fryer because it can handle the volume of meat so it can all be cooked at the same time. I would skip the one that comes with the InstantPot and get the Dash to handle the air frying.

UPDATE: I Just got through about a week of back and forth with InstantPot Customer service trying to decide if I had a defective steam valve on my pot. They were awesome and ended up saying they'd send me a new pot. Their customer service was just wonderful! I had also purchased the extended insurance for it from Amazon Asurion and they ended up refunding my money so I could buy the next level up due to InstantPot being out of stock on my model they replaced with a brand new upgraded Pro model!!! It was worth more so I had to bump up the insurance. Worth every penny. I first contacted InstantPot Customer service that resolved everything, that way I didn't have any claim on the Asurion policy. Always go through the Manufacturer first to see if they'll resolve it. Wonderful results, great company.

We got the Duo Crisp for Christmas and love it. I like being able to pressure cook something (ie a whole chicken) to lock in the juices, and then just pop the fryer lid on and get it crispy. We have a stand alone air fryer oven that we can't do that with. That's why I prefer the IP Duo Crisp.

I just got the IP Duo Crisp and Air Fryer and love it! I am not getting rid of my Mealthy lid, though, because it is a really perfect addition to the IP, in particular for making lasagna etc., when you cook something in the IP and give it a little broil with cheese on top at the end. With two IPs, both with a Mealthy lid and the IP Duo Crisp, I have so many options now without having to stop and clean in between cooking. I can make lasagna in one and air fry some spring rolls as an appetizer at the same time. Also: you do not need to use the IP for the Mealthy lid! You can fit it on any right sized stainless steel pot as well

My issue with the stand alone IP air fryer is that it has a (toxic) nonstick coating on all of the parts that touch food. The reason why I love my Instant Pot is that it is non toxic- its internal parts are stainless steel. The day IP makes a stand alone air fryer with a stainless steel inside, I will buy one. Until then, I will continue to use my Mealthy lid.

The Instant Pot air fryer container holds 2 to 3 times as much as the others. Had both!
The Mealthy cycles the heat on and off to maintain temperature. The IP basket is easy to clean. I wipe it out after every use. Wipe the liner pot every 3 to 4 times. I line the IP bottom with aluminum foil to catch the grease and the crumbles!

The Ninja BT770 with the optional Food Prep (VSK700), a Ninja Air Fryer Max XL and the 6Qt Instant Pot Ultra makes our cooking easy peasy for the 5 of us. We recently added an Instant Pot Air Fryer lid (amazon has them new open box for $35 right now) just to have since we are using the air fryer a lot and sometimes have two different things we want to heat up. We only use our oven for 'pizza nights', but the air fryer does great reheating the pizza the next day for an easy Saturday lunch and it's nice and crispy with melty cheese.
Our favorite gifts to give are the Air Fryer or Instant Pot to friends and family. We are sending an 8 QT Instant Pot Pro to a large family in Colombia to help them make meal times easier.

No need to whine about cleaning the stainless steel pot. It's dead simple to clean, and can be used with parchment. I clean it by adding water, a drop of dishwash liquid, hitting steam for a minute, and everything just wipes clean. Swirl and dump in the sink.
I never, never put my pressure cooker away. I use it every day and got the lid for browning and crisping immediately in the pot. Love it. Would never bother with yet another appliance.
The lid comes with a silicone trivet to rest it on, so no burning.

I have that exact same air fryer lid and I can tell you, you do not have to use an instant pot with it. it will work with any oven rated Dutch oven or pot. Just leave it sitting on top of your stove as it will get absolutely incredibly hot you need to be very careful of. But so much easier to use and not worrying about where to put the hot lid as it's all done on your stove top you don't need to buy that big cumbersome air fryer.

I see your reason for a stand alone air fryer verses an air fry lid. I was tickled to give my air fryer to my daughter and son n' law to use my new air fry lid on the one pot. I do usually only cook for 2, my husband and myself. The air fry lid has a fan circulating air in the one pot, cooking all around food. I used one pot in motorhome to cook casserole then used air fry lid to melt cheese and crisp up the top. I don't have room for additional appliances so the lid works great. I've used a nuwave for years, air circulation cooks the food evenly which I like with an air fry lid. Sending warm wishes. I love you all in Christ. Hugs.

The actual instant pot air fryer lid actually addresses most of your complaints about your lid. Yes it would be nice to see inside but having a lid that comes on and off easily, a timer that continues to cook without restarting, and a proper basket setup is better with the instant pot version. I would not recommend your air fryer lid after seeing it in use. Great vids keep them up.

I love my Mealthy airfryer lid. I have a pressure cooker that is not a instant pot so I use that to put the the airfryer lid on. Cleaning up the instant pot before you use the fryer lid is no different than having to clean more than one pan at a time. I only have to cook for one person so I don't need a bigger air fryer.

Just watched your video after unboxing my Duo Crisp. I don't think you are taking into account the recipes that can begin with some pressure cooking and then ending with the air fryer lid. Also the Duo Pot air fryer set up is much better than the version you have. I'd suggest some more trials with the full product and recipes for the combo.

  • @ExodusFX
    @ExodusFX Pƙed 3 lety +19

It looks like you have the old version of the Crisplid. The newer one comes with a deeper basket. Also, you don't have to use the tall trivet with the lid. Use the standard IP one if you want more distance from the heating element. If you lift the lid and give the food a quick flip or a toss, then the time doesn't reset. Just hit start and it continues where it left off. I also don't think there's a big difference in cleaning. Personally, I'd never let my air fryer sit unwashed after use, so I have to clean the whole basket every time. As someone with a small kitchen, the Instant Pot stays on the counter (it can do so many things) and the air fryer gets stored away until it's needed.

Yup, my observations as well. Some unnecessary drama added in regards to operating the Mealthy. If you place your Mealthy next to your stove, you won’t have to frantically search for a place to put it. Complaining about cleaning the Instant Pot liner but choosing to not clean the other unit? The presentation reminded me of an exaggerated late night infomercial.

When I move I'll replace it with a 1500 watt stand alone model. The Vortex looks wonderful. The square shape of the basket will provide a lot more cooking surface area than the round and oval ones and your review was real great and thorough.Besides that the shape and stainless steel front looks really attractive if I choose to leave it on the counter Thank you Lisa

OMG I just found your channel today and you have helped me so much with just two videos.
I was so happy to hear you say that the 6 quart Insta pot is sufficient. You have a few more people to feed with yours, but I always like to make a little more so that I can freeze it. I cook mostly for myself. I also wanted to get the air fryer and didn’t know which one to get. I have been waiting over a month to buy my instant pot save enough to get the one with the air fryer lid and that was a quart. I didn’t know if I should get the inlet independently or on it or if it was even any good. Today you have save me so much money and I can take my ChristmasGift cards and get lots more than I thought I could with it. This week I’m headed to target to get my 6 quart instant pot. I have limited space in my kitchen and I only have space for a multi-cooker or air fryer. I went with the IP duo crisp 8 quarts so that there’s a larger surface area for air frying. If I need to pressure cooker a smaller quantity I would use the pot in a pot method. If you’ve got space on your kitchen, I agree that a standalone air fryer would be a superior option. But I’m very happy with the air frying lid that comes with the duo crisp. It performs well and its space saving.

Well it seems you are down grading the instant pot
Washing is not a hassle at all, and if instant pot browns more then its best than the stand alone air fryer, the stand alone air fryer basket is more hassle and a big job to clean what I feel as it has different basket
And in my opinion instant pot company makes excellent products and moreover its 11 in 1 pressure cooker with air fryer lid, it has many other excellent options to consider like sous vide and much more
Where as stand alone air fryer doesn’t.
I still have no idea why you made such review of down grading instant pot and brought several self made problems with that..like cleaning, pot sizes, airfrying size etc

Luv my IP Duo alone but I definitely would appreciate the Vortex stand alone fryer over the IP brand fryer I’ve been using..Even though it’s usually just me here via w/ occasional friends over..it’s bigger capacity. I’m seeing more convenience w/ much easier cleaning than the lid & small basket surface I’ve been dealing with. So You’ve helped me decide to make the switch.. The Air fryer Lids seem awfully cumbersome. The Duo Crisp lid is just so easy to grab and set on the top and it sets off to the side on its cool little launching pad. Having to plug in another cord would be a deal-breaker for me. I have a small kitchen and the duo crisp takes up less real estate than any other combo. Love your videos!

I have not touched my stand-alone airfryer since I got the IP Duo Crisp and I use the airfryer feature daily. The comparison is misleading as the Duo Crisp has more to offer than the "lids" offered, i.e. I am dehydrating chilies right now and the IP basket is more convenient than the trivet/basket contraption you showed. I airfried a 2.6 kg chicken in the Duo Crisp, I don't think it would have fit height-wise in the Vortex. The liner of the Duo Crisp is not getting hot at the top when using the proper IP lid and I can airfry on two levels. Just my opinion.

A major example for me is cooking a rack of ribs in the instant pot and wanting to finish/crisp them up and carnalize the BBQ sauce I need to wash out the instant pot before I can use the air fryer. The duo Crisp is perfect for college students and people on a budget, the air fryer works well with the instant pot.

The Instant Pot pressure cooker is stainless and doesn't release that awful chemical smell that the plastic does. That alone is worth the extra step to me. These companies need to address this issue and make an all-stainless interior and basket stand-alone air fryer with no plastic. After all, the whole idea of air fryers initially was healthier eating.

Thanks for the comparison, have been debating on getting the IP air fry lid. One question is do you HAVE to use the inner container that comes with the IP Air Fryer lid? It seems that you should be able to use a trivet or screen on bottom of the original liner, and you would gain more space. I have a NuWave Air Fryer, and the few times I've used it there was a strong plastic smell coming from it that didn't go away even after trying it 3 or 4 times. So it sits gathering dust. Also, tried doing tater tots in it, and after shaking/stirring halfway through, ended up with basically hash browns. :(
One other question, do you HAVE to keep everything in a single layer? I thought the point of a 6 quart air fryer was you can (mostly) fill the basket. With 4 people in the house, I don't have all night to do batches. (For small amounts, I do have an air fry option on my toaster oven that works fine, so if only a small batch is needed, that works as well.)

I did get the IP one for $42 on Cyber Monday. Happy to add it to the collection. I don’t use my IP as much as I would like, and maybe that’s because it did not come with a recipe book of any sort. That might have helped. I got the IP and the Lid at deeply discounted prices, so they weren’t a complete waste. At least the lid will give me some idea of whether I might want to invest in an actual air fryer in the future and at the same time make my IP more useful for now. I'm researching which I want, a stand alone air fryer or the lid for my Instant Pot. You'r video hasn't helped much on that decision. What you have done is helped me make up my mind as far as the lid for the instant pot goes. I do not want the Mealthy Crisp Lid for all the reasons you listed. The lid that Instant Pot makes addresses your concern that you brought up with the Mealthy Crisp Lid. Instant Pot lid also has all the function that your Air Fryer has. The pot for the lid keeps the drippings and such away from the liner so you could go straight from Air Frying to cooking. In one video I saw them cook a total of 6 chicken fingers in two layers. Still with the 6 quart the amount of food is lower than your stand alone. I don't know about the 8 quart. In conclusion I want to thank you for helping me decide on the lid. I'm still not sure as to which way to go. If I go with the lid and I remember I'll let you know my thoughts if you would like.
