- On October 2, 1970 two planes left Wichita, Kansas carrying the Wichita State University football team. After a brief stop in Denver the two planes departed. The "Black plane" carrying the backup players followed the preplanned route and the "Gold plane" carrying the starting players took the scenic route over the Rocky Mountains. This video gives a birds-eye view of the disastrous outcome of this event.

The workers at the Eisenhower Tunnel on the interstate were among the first rescuers to reach the crash site. A friend of mine (Johnny Taylor) died several days later from his burns after he and others were trying to get injured teammates out of the wreckage and the fuel they were standing in exploded. Thanks for your video.
How awful. I can't imagine their shock because I'm sure they thought they could rescue many. So sad.. RIP 🙏
So sad.
My dad was 1 of the workers (Joe P. Gallegos). He died in 2009. However he did make to Kansas to visit the memorial before he died. 1 of the things on his bucket list.
Oh what a coincidence my grandpap was a flag guy on that site.
I was stationed at McConnell AFB, Wichita, Kansas through the 1960’s. I had just moved my family back to Kansas City when this tragedy happened. And to this day the “Shockers” have never had a football program.
In 1970 I was a freshman at University of Memphis. I was in the marching band, and we were at all of the games. We played Wichita State in the late fall, after that terrible crash. The young men on their team were 3rd string, and whoever else their coach could find that had any football experience. Our coach played most of our 2nd and 3rd string players. It was so pitiful to know what had happened and our coach made sure that we would play them even, and not run up the score
Great Coach
Forrest, you capture more of the essence of these events in 11 minutes than a typical 90 minute documentary. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you for continuing to do what you do.
Hes great isnt he? Fell out of my algorithm so I have much content to catch up on! lol
Jason, I was just about to type the same thing!
Thanks Forrest these videos are amazing.
Plus no infernal blasted commercials!
I wasn't expecting that much wreckage left
It was humbling to see it all.
@@forresthaggertychannel4301 Well many thanks to you sir for sharing your video and your analysis. 👌
I was surprised too and that it was from early 1970!
Weird that authorities haven't cleaned it up - or scrappers haven't cleaned it up for the metal given its proximity to the road.
That must be humbling. All that wreckage just sitting right off I-70. I must have driven by there twenty times on vacation.
I had never heard of this incident. It is absolutely incredible that the crash site is so intact. Truly tragic.
It happened six weeks before the Marshal football team crash which overshadowed this crash.
My Defensive Coordinater/DB Coach was an assistant coach at Witchita State. He was on a recruiting assignment before the game, so he was not on the plane. I was a freshman in college in 1970. He used to tell us how priviledged we were to play in the Big Ten. I figured we were priviledged to be alive.
I know of quite a few 'intact' crash sites in northern New England.
In most cases, the wreckage was too overwhelming to move out, but survivers and bodies were always immediately located and removed. Also, these crash sites have become something of hiking destinations for the curious visitor, altho many are extremely difficult to reach.
@@mousetreehouse6833I would bet the way crash investigations occurred were different back then too...sees like most the old crash site are at least 50 years old..I wonder if perhaps the reconstruction of wrecks wasn't as common then or perhaps unneeded due to type of crash? Interesting
My dad used to have a Wichita State Football crew neck and he wore it all of the time even though it was worn out and had holes in it. I asked him about the football team and he would get emotional about it because that was his favorite college football team as a kid. Never understood what happened to the team or why they didn’t have a football team anymore until he told me the story about the plane crash. Rest In Peace to all of the people who lost their lives. The image of the logo on that crew neck will be embedded in my mind forever.
While tragic that's not why the football program has stopped. It went all the way to the mid-1980s it just never really made any money I guess I tried to start it up again but it'll never happen
@@chuckHart70 I didn’t know that, I wish they’d bring the football program back
Having your boss as your first officer is a terrible idea. It's an awkward situation that can lead to exactly this. The captain was probably pressured to go against his best judgement until it was too late.
I loved these little documentaries, and I always will. Very detailed and thorough videos of past events
Agreed. But to those who perished, R.I.P.
Being a pilot who flies in mountainous terrain you really got to prep for the route. Box canyons are a no no. RIP to all who perished.
I learn something new every day. I knew you had to have a certain amount of speed when that close to the ground or it would stall. Didnt know about the canyon thing tho.
@@philipancell516 There are many factors in how a airplane performs. Its called an envelope and you better stay within in. They didn't
Absolutely. Pilots kill themselves every year thinking they can casually fly through the rockies in a single engine airplane. I live in Colorado Springs, so before I ever take any passengers west I’ll be doing a lot of preparation.
I'm not an aviation person at all so forgive my ignorance but wouldn't a plane normally fly way above mountains? Even a prop plane?
@@Vicvines Yes prop or jet you plan for a altitude above mountainous terrain. They decided (Captain and first officer) that they would stay low for the scenery. However they flew up a canyon with rising terrain that the aircrafts climb rate couldn't over come. Rookie mistake as far as mountain flying goes. Higher elevations degrade performance.
Never knew about this one. That crash site was like it just happened. Eerie feeling about this place.
Forrest, you do a great job teaching us about events that happened many years ago. Also in 1970, the Marshall Thundering Herd football team was involved in a deadly plane crash outside of Huntington, WV. Might be another event you'd want to cover. A movie "We Are Marshall" was made in 2006 starring Matthew McConaughey. I have heard about this event because of the parallel to the Marshall crash.
I was a freshman at Texas A&M University in the fall of 1970. Our very first football game that year was against Wichita State on September 12. I vividly remember hearing about this crash and how shocked everyone felt about this loss to the Wichita State family. As I recall Wichita State dropped football after this tragic event but I’m not sure what year that was. I know we played them as our opening game of the year all 4 years while I was there as a student. RIP
My dad was working with his dump truck paving I-70 back then and saw the plane going above him and crash up in the trees. The job boss drove up to the area and ran up to the crash and could not do anything the fire was to hot to try to help anyone. He felt guilty because he could hear people screaming and could not help. Very sad day
Thank you for sharing. Very interesting perspective on the incident.
you're underrated
Really cool you went to all the sites in person. Shows you really care and are passionate about your content. Thanks for the description as well. Great video, loved it.
Very hard to imagine Owner and Captain didn't review the charts before embarking on such a dangerous flight.
Life long resident of Wichita.
This event is etched in the minds of Wichita residents forever.
Heavy, high density altitude, and attempting an aggressive turn at low speed = recipe for disaster.
Nice work Forrest - as always.
Thank you Forrest. Exactly the type of historical information that I find interesting. I cherish your videos and appreciate the sometimes unfortunate history I learn with them.
I love your videos, Forrest! The effort you put into investigating and studying these events makes for concise and thus more enjoyable presentations.
Never heard of this crash. Thanks for the quick history lesson. Keep the videos coming. Love them.
Reminds me about the Marshall University football team plane crash in Huntington, WV. Great video as always!
I'm from Kansas and have never heard of this. Love all your videos. Thanks!
Same here and Kansans know our history! What a shame this isn’t more known!
Thank you for remembering this terrible time. So sad . I remember when this happened. It is so devastating.
I was at University of Colorado at that time and affiliated with the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group. We rolled on this and to say it was a horrific life changing moment for a young fellow is putting it mildly. After this my stint in the Navy as a corpsman was a cakewalk.
Another well-told story of a tragedy. Your videos are so addictive and make me want to watch again and again.
This showed up in my feed on YT. Now I'll have a look at your channel. Well done. Thank you.
Your on sight visits and research and effort are very impressive Mr. Haggerty . Thank you.
Your videos never disappoint, Forrest. Thanks for the history lessons.
These videos you do are outstanding, always enjoyable thank you!
Glad you're back! Can't get enough of your videos, I often rewatch the old ones.
I remember reading that one of the team members had worked with the Loveland Pass Interstate 70 construction crew over that summer in 1970. He sked if the pilots would fly over the area so that everyone on the plane could see it, and that is what gave the copilot the idea to take the scenic route.
I remember that day well as a WSU student. The campus was deep in sadness and disbelief!
I am from Marshall University and grew up in Huntington. The pilots of the Marshall plane didnt really have the necessary experience to fly into Tri- State airport. Hopefully we are learning from these events so that these tragedies dont get repeated
Thank you for these little moments in history. I really enjoy the channel
My favorite channel in CZcams , i wish we could get a video everyday but i know that hard and takes alot of work , thank you Forrest for the info and the knowledge
Thanks for another informative though sad entry on your excellent channel. Can always trust the info you gather and present to your followers. Looking forward to the next one.
Awesome documentary work 👏 Thanks for all the hard work, especially including all the small details 👍
Thank you Forrest!! Always admired your videos!! Cant wait for more!
I have watched all your videos, you deserve 1M subs easy
Thank you!:)))
Thank you for making a video on this I live in Maize I’ll be going to WSU this fall, situations like this open your eyes.
These are the best videos on CZcams. More!
Always look forward to your videos Forrest. Nicely done video and analysis. As a former national accident investigator I don't think there's anything to add.
Thank you for the compliment!
I’m from Wichita KS! Tragic story but super cool seeing my hometown being featured on the Chanel!
Another bummer of a video, but consistently top notch presentation. Kudos to you. RIP to the lost.
Waking to a new video from the best channel on CZcams means it's going to be a great day! Thank you, Forrest.
I live half a world away and was six months old when this happened. Never heard of this accident. You have an amazing way of bringing (often tragic) history to life. Sad for all involved. Thanks @Forrest Haggerty Channel. You Sir are a legend. 👍👍
please i love your videos, when i saw you had uploaded i just start cheering. your content is unique please do more uploads
You do great work Forrest. Please keep it up.
Thanks for another great video Forrest. It was great meeting you at ACCA last month.
It was great meeting you too John! Maybe see you at the next one and thank you for your comment!

My neck of the woods. Maybe I will be going for a hike this weekend. Always enjoy your videos. Great work.
Thanks for this video. The tower isn’t the only building left at Stapleton. Some of the terminal buildings are still there at the airport in addition to the control Tower. They are on Quebec St. and house United training facilities.
Hi again Forrest from Northern Ireland. A really interesting video of a very sad event which should have never happened. My condolences to the families of all who died. Paul
Good job Forrest, Looked like Janis and I got a short "Cameo" appearance at the crash site. Cool you were able to go back in time and show the old airport layout. Great seeing you again!
Hello you two. It was great to see you as well! See you at the next gathering:)))
Dude you've saved me so much time and research at times.. this is the eact type thing I will go off for hrs pouring over google earth/maps/street view and all available info... thank you.. im subbed and liking any video I come across.. good shit my guy 👍 nice quick direct presentation is the key for me here
I have binged watched your series more than once, they are so interesting informative and well done I just can’t tell you. I wish I could research my fathers plane crash in the high desert as well as you. I can’t find anything from back in 1956 when he died. I was just 3 yrs old at the time. Sure enjoy your vlogs🌺
Great channel, and so bizarre seeing the Stapleton Airport location now. I lived in that area in the 80's when that was a super busy, huge airport. SO weird seeing it now as a quiet neighborhood.
My only little squabble with this video: the location pointed out for Loveland pass is actually well to the east of where the pass actually is (the first time is was pointed out).
Amazing content/research as always. Love this ❤
Great! Very interesting and educational as always. Thank you!
What an excellent, succinct account of a tragedy to due the hubris of a man who wanted to show off. You illustrated every step of the disaster very well. The contemporary visitors to the site of crash was most compelling.
In live in Valley center just north of Wichita Kansas. I very much appreciate this video thank you Forest!
Quality content as always. Enjoyed it! 💯
Welcome back champ, I hope you enjoyed your well deserved break. As I said before you're a breath of fresh air on the internet. Your uploads are always on point for entertainment value, looking forward to see many more.
Thank you and you are very kind!:)))
Yay a new video!! never heard of this before!! I love learning new things!! Thank you Forrest!! :))
Thank you for your comment Vianey!:)))
And happy teaching!
Very good video yet again, very informative and backed with tons of extra info.
Good to have you back Mr. Haggerty.
I live maybe 15 minutes away from the old Stapleton Airport! It's crazy to see you right there basically in my backyard! Great videos!
I use to live near there too, off of Montview Blvd. and Havana
Missed you, man. Great job on the video.
Your channel goes so hard I love telling my friends about it
Thank you for taking us back…to history and to the scene of the crime. Love your presentations.
As usual I patiently wait for a new video to come out, They are always excellent.
Soon!
I remember this vividly as I lived in Arkansas at the time. The Razorbacks (U of Ark) were scheduled to play them (I think) the following weekend or just after. They ended up playing the game as a memorial to the many team deaths. It was a lopsided loss to Arkansas and was really unavoidable. No one wanted to run up the score but it just happened. I even had a tape of that game I made over the radio but later deleted it.
I think of this accident often with so many professional and college athletes traveling these days. God bless all who died and had to survive that tragedy. I'm sure the community suffers to some extent still.
I remember that as well, I have been a lifelong Arkansan and attended the U of A.
I was at that game
it’s nice to have you back forrest :)
I love your videos Forrest & I have been following you since early 2020. What I notice is that aeroplane crashes seem to be due to the pilot rushing or not planning the flight properly. Its scary. Already looking forward to the next vid. Thank you Forrest 👍👍♥️ 🇬🇧 🇬🇧
Thank you for your support. I appreciate it enormously!
Pleasant surprise to see you uploading again. I hope you are doing well.

Amazed for a known wreckage site to be that intact after so many years that serves as a grim reminder and memorial. Appreciated this came up on my feed.
I always comment before and afterwards. Thank you for the gem tonight Mr. Haggerty!
Thank you for your kind comment!
That is crazy that it’s still there! RIP to those who died.
Excellent content as always, I appreciate you paying respects to the players by showing the team flag
Thanks for your mature approach to this accident. Everyone in Wichita took this hard.
It's good to have you back;
It’s such a long hike, it probably doesn’t make sense to pick up the debris. Just seems wild that it’s been there since the 70s.
@Kitty Kelly it is a long hike to the Carol Lombard crash site. Some debris is still there after more than 70 years
Those sightseers didn't seem to have a problem getting there and it is beside a road.

Thank you for another amazing video.
Forrest , Great video . Appalling to see the wreckage still being intact and it looks like it happened recently. Thanks from India.
excellent explanation! Using the map really put it into perspective. Thank you
You’re welcome!
Forrest, great job as usual. You should consider doing a similar video for the Marshall University football crash in the early 70s. The team, coaches and boosters were on the way home to Huntington WV from a game at East Carolina University and crashed in inclement weather. Everyone on board was killed. The movie "We Are Marshall" covers the aftermath of that crash when they rebuilt the football program from scratch.
Thank you for this excellent story. Yes, I remember this sad and unfortunate crash very well.
Of course, I was young. I was offered a scholarship to attend and play football at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (SIU-C) & WSU the next fall. So my parents and I were supposed to attend the away Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) football game at WSU on Saturday, Oct 10, 1970 when WSU was scheduled to play SIU at football. I had plans to visit other colleges to evaluate their offers so driving to Wichita that Saturday was our way of making one trip to look at two programs. Unfortunately, the trip and the game was canceled due to that terrible crash.
I ended up playing 4 years for & graduating from another NCAA school.
