  • In the world of social media influencers, the line between what's fact and advertisement can be blurry. The Fyre Festival debacle showcases a consequence of that system.

    Dang Kendall gets paid over THREE times more for ONE instagram post than the average American household makes in an entire year. Let that sink in. The blessing of opportunity in this country and also the curse of what society has created.

    • @Eden519
      @Eden519 Před 5 lety +12

      For sure; but more than just being careful, they should be held accountable for misrepresenting something as a genuine interest or opinion vs a paid ad. Some people were naive enough to think they’d actually be there. Influencers that take money to promote must finally be required to tag their promotion as what they are: lying ads. See this enough and people start to understand there’s no authenticity and will ignore them...the way many now ignore other web ads. Influencer advertising works because they all lie about what they’re doing.

    I don't think that the models should be held accountable for anything to do with the Fyre failure.
    They had no control over the event, and at the time they did their video shoot they would have assumed the event was going to be successful.
    It is natural to be mad and seek financial restoration, but that has to be directed at the main organizer.
    It is too bad something like this happened, it always sucks when people lose time and money for an event that failed.

    The influencers should be held responsible too.
    They're not ADVERTISERS. They're INFLUENCERS. They're literally there to influence the masses in a way very different from marketing companies. They rely on building trust to get you to put your money in something. Exactly like scammers or Ponzi schemes.
    We have given influencers too much power. Either we take away this power or we hold them to a very high level of accountability.

    You can't just hire more help for this kind of festival. People forget that most of those naked bicyclists at Burning Man are artists, engineers and builders who create the festival.
    For every model Fyre hired to stand around or post on instagram they also had to hire a person to do actual labor.
    That's why people get pissed about private Google camps at Burning Man: introducing a paid luxury system undermines the volunteerism that makes something like Burning Man work. It's also part of why tons of smaller, invite only Burner type campouts cropped up.

  • @TheOneAboveAll_
    @TheOneAboveAll_ Před 5 lety

    To call someone an influencer and lock them into something they might not technically be apart of is very risky.
    The fact of letters being sent out, and potential trouble of your influence is now being regulated and capped speaks volumes of what is to come. Because you have influence, they want you to disclose you influence and who cuts a check because of it. People's influence is now being measured on a more analytic approach.
    How can your influence be used at your will to convince others to do or support what you say, how far will they go and to what distance will they follow. Is there enough influence from a celebrity to have their followers swing a vote, how can your influence be used by another to con another into doing something that will take advantage?
    In a court of law, I can call you a thief and you can deny that claim. It then can go to a jury who needs to be influenced to decide the outcome if the claim is true or not. It would seem that in life it's not what you can prove(rather this case or othes), but rather who can you influence.
