      Cows can talk in the Fallout world, that's canon from Fallout 1. "Moo I say." TBH if people went after Fallout 1/2/3/NV with the same level of autism they're going after the show none of those games would hold up. The biggest problem I have is not pointing out flaws, which all the games AND the show have plenty of, but the double standards, the people quoting lore very selectively (or not even knowing the lore), and the huge amount of nostalgia the old games are dipped in that lets people passively handwave their own flaws away. It doesn't feel like an honest discussion.

    Re: Vault-Tec losing money and needing to start the war:
    If they're capitalist, in that world, building vaults, they're operating similarly to a defense contractor, surely? There are defense contractors who are paid BILLIONS to make anti-missile systems on American soil, that have never fired a single shot at a legitimate threat since they were built. Those contractors were still very handsomely paid to create them because they're paid by acquiring the government contract work, not NECESSARILY moving products as if they're WalMart. So, if V-Tec is the sole government-backed provider of these vaults (and ignoring the nefarious motivations for the war) they should be raking in cash. They'd have the US government, and probably others, suckling at their teet for as long as the war is a possibility.
    Their version is a goofy strawman of how this would work in a capitalist system. They failed military-industrial complex 101 - the big money likes war but they never want the war to END, let alone END THE WORLD. The show barely understands what capitalism even is while trying to criticise it, many such cases.

    • @samwallaceart288

      They have it exactly backwards; defense contractors are incentivized to keep everyone _afraid_ of war but never actually having war. The second WW3 starts, they suddenly have a lot more responsibility and make a lot less money.
      Think about how much insurance agencies make for people _not_ getting injured and filing a claim. Insurance companies aren't hiring goons to steal cars and bust kneecaps, that's rtarded.

    • @crassuscorax7731
      @crassuscorax7731 Před měsícem

      @@hinugundamB Yeah man that's pretty much the game lore for them, especially if Bethesda or the show want to confirm the space stuff from Van Buren. We know Vault-Tec are trash and don't have people's best interest at heart, it's just wrapping it up in talk of profit and "losing our investment" is hilariously off lmao.
      Especially when other, non-nationalized, non-VT businesses agreed to it. Iirc the lore does outright say RobCo were defense contractors, that's how the Mister Gutsy was made (Edit: WRONG, Gutsy was General Atomics, RobCo worked with GAI and the US government to create Liberty Prime and the Robobrains instead, my bad), but regardless RobCo etc wouldn't have the same sinister goals as VT which is why I think they tried the whole capitalistic angle. Of course RobCo is chaired by House who was in that meeting, which is its own can of worms, but I digress...
      I think the Enclave are too tempting to be left dead. The show or hell, Bethesda themselves, will definitely bring them back at some point

    Plot Twist Advice:
    Brandon Sanderson is excellent at the sort of plot twists where suddenly everything makes perfect sense and you wonder how you didn’t see it coming. The way he does it is to have absolute mountains of foreshadowing, but every single piece of foreshadowing has an unrelated, immediate purpose in the narrative. If the story is complex enough, and has many moving parts, it becomes possible to have an event or conversation with a clear and present purpose to the story, so your mind isn’t suspicious, but the double meaning seems obvious after the big reveal. With some of his books, I went back and immediately reread it, and it feels like every scene has foreshadowing, making the second read hugely satisfying. The Well of Ascension and Rhythm of War in particular have such paradigm-shifting twists, and the second read is practically a whole new experience. The main plot, which was compelling in its own right, is recontextualized now that you see where all the subtext was going.
    Hard to do? Of course. But if your world is rich enough and the characters complex enough, there are many opportunities to hide huge clues where no one will recognize them for what they are.

    FDR served 4 consecutive terms, although he died in office before completing the 4th term. Presidential term limits of 2 terms or 10 years came as a result of FDR’s long span in office, and fear of one day creating a freely elected dictatorship through the cult of personality. Prior to him presidents had self limited to 2 terms in office, a precedent set by George Washington.

    For a sensible capitalist on this scenario, would be to keep international tensions high, to have demand for the vaults but never have it escalate to an actual war. You might be able to make a sensible story about VaultTech manipulating the political situation to such an extent that it got away from them and triggered a full scale exhange, but that would not be something they wanted if their goal was just making money. You could also give them some kind of secret bizarre ideological goal, but that would make their motivations non-capitalist.

      The canon keeps changing but the idea seems to be that Vault Tec and the Enclave had decided that due to resources running out on earth that the best plan was to colonise another planet. That meant that the vaults were not designed to protect a population to rebuild but were instead intended to test scenarios for space travel and colonisation.
      That kind of ties in with the space area of Nuka World.
      Basically you have multiple ideas of who started the nuclear exchange.
      1. The Communist Chinese
      2. The Enclave/Vault Tec
      3. The Aliens
      4. The Old Ones who appear to have a big influence hence all the big metal head decorations
      There are clues that could lead to any of the above, but no definite cause as become canon.

    FDR was elected for four consecutive terms dying in April 1945, about two and a half months into his fourth term. The 22nd Amendment (1951) to the US Constitution now limits people to being elected to just two Presidential terms. They may also serve part of someone else's term (Vice Presidential Succession) as long as it is less than half of their predecessor's term. Prior to the 22nd Amendment, Presidents were limited to two terms by tradition only. George Washington set this tradition by not running for a third term even though he could have been elected President for the rest of his life. FDR was the only American President to break this tradition by running for a third term in the aftermath of the Fall of France in 1940 during WWII. The only President to be elected to non-consecutive terms was Grover Cleveland (22nd & 24th President of the United States) in the late 19th century. Cheers

    • @11alpha48
      @11alpha48 Před měsícem +1

      Theodore Roosevelt is a borderline case. He succeeded McKinley 6 months into his presidency in 1901 and was elected to a full-term in 1904, so from 1901 to 1909 he served 15/16ths of a two-term presidency. Rather than seeking what would effectively be a third term in 1908, he supported William Howard Taft as his successor. However, by the 1912 election, he had soured on Taft and ran against him for the Republican nomination. Taft prevailed, and Roosevelt ran as a Progressive, splitting the vote and allowing the Democrat Woodrow Wilson to win.
      Roosevelt could have argue that he didn't fully break the Washington tradition, since if he'd won in 1912 he would have only been elected President twice. If the 22nd Amendment had been in force at the time, however, he would not have been able to run, since that amendment also provides that you can only be elected to one Presidential term if you've served more than 2 years of another President's term.
      It is an interesting alternate history counterfactual to speculate if, had Roosevelt won in 1912, would he have stepped down in 1916 or sought election to yet another term? Given the war in Europe, it's possible he would have made the same decision that FDR made in 1940.

    While I enjoyed the Fallout show Vault Tech choosing to nuke the world was silly writing.

    Re Boutella's acting - I've seen people praising her in things they've seen, but every time it's been for her supporting roles. It could be that she's just not a leading actress. From what I've seen of her Rebel Moon performance in Disparu's reviews, she has absolutely no main character energy.
    Re having to clarify what being a Star Wars fan means since there's so much crap now- I've taken to heart a comment Gary made that Disney SW is off brand SW, heh. And it can strongly be argued that, with de-canonizing the so-called EU, they've really created 2 versions of SW. So in my case as a SW fan it means pre 2012, even if I don't like everything (like the prequels).

    • @Johnny.H.Rickensien
      @Johnny.H.Rickensien Před měsícem +1

      @@ClassicSteveI'm just pointing out the double standards of judging the media he likes and the ones he doesn't. Gandalf somehow returned is basically what happens and it's addressed in a couple of lines. If this is acceptable then the emperor's return in TROS is also acceptable.

    • @samwallaceart288
      @samwallaceart288 Před měsícem

      We'd need a more specific example for Dune to really compare. Like, if it's understanding how the Spacing Guild play into everything and how that's Paul's leverage over the Emperor (which the movie doesn't go into AT ALL), that can affect how invested you're in in the entire story; whereas whether or not Gandalf is a magic man who can reincarnate doesn't really make our break Sauron VS Gondor's power levels.
      Knowing MauLer, I think his deal-breaker is the characters being intuitive. In LOTR you know exactly what Gandalf wants, what he's afraid of, and what he's aiming for; and you know exactly what Sauron wants, what Sauron's afraid of, and what his limitations are that he needs to work around. Since you got all that, you can get away with a lot more out of the story at least on the intuitive level, even if the magic system and exact lore are kept largely off-screen.
      The issue with Dune here is it's not entirely clear who the Harkonnens are afraid of (it's not the Emperor), it's not clear why spice is such an urgent thing to get under control, and it's not clear what exactly is keeping the Harkonnens from nuking the Fremen from orbit (it's not the Emperor); and without that context, it's a lot harder to get a read on what Stilgar has to worry about, and what Baron's limitations are; it feels more like "The Harkonnens haven't found them yet because the plot says so", which MauLer tends to be dissatisfied with.
      Even though Gandalf coming back is out of left field, we still have a basic understanding that he is limited to regular human means of travel, he clearly communicates to us what he is and isn't able to foresee. And same with Sauron; even though it's never explained if he even has a body or not, we have that basic understanding that Sauron's armies are stopped at the river, and that Sauron's spirit is very vulnerable right now and that he's overcompensating for his fears by amassing as many armies as possible and doing everything he can to keep his enemies from uniting.
      We may not know all the geography but we know why everyone is doing what to whom and what's taking them so long to do it. LOTR made sure that was communicated to the audience and left intact even with the changes.
      I don't think Dune is a bad adaptation by any means, but this particular issue seems to be where it loses people when it does. It's an interesting comparison for sure, neither are without their issues.
