I was a weekend warrior running my own boat out of Ocean City MD.
Penn 750, 850, or 950SS spinning reels with 30 or 40lb mono and a 50 -60 lb mono leader. We didn't have the shark problem most of the time, but if encountered a 12/0 Senator loaded with wire. It wasn't going to be a good day for the shark.
I did no high speed trolling, so 2 speed 30 's and 50's were all required. If I was tournament fishing, I used all Penn equipment (rods and reels 30, 50, and 80 lb reels) with IGFA terminal gear, just for the prize money.
The only wide reels I currently own are a pair of Shimano 50TLD's and a pair of Penn 70's. Most of the time, they're too bulky for average fishing.
