      That's a good question. I personally don't use topshots like Dylan does, but it would be reasonable to say 25 to 50 yards. That gives you many opportunities to use the fluoro or mono topshot without needing another one for quite a while.

    Any conventional reel recommendations for grouper fishing the incoming tide at the skyway?

    How many pounds of drag do you think a reel should have to stop a good size red snapper and grouper?

    What kind of spinning setup would you recommend for fishing off the Skyway bridge for grouper?

    • @HeadFirstFishing
      @HeadFirstFishing  Před 4 lety

      For just grouper you want alot of backbone in your rod and alot of drag pressure with strong line. 7 to 8 ft rod and a 6000 to 7000 series reel with drag around 80% locked. Sometimes you may need full lockdown on the drag if fishing right by pilings.

      @@HeadFirstFishing Would a Penn Battle 3 5000 also work?

    • @HeadFirstFishing

      5000 would probably be the minimum.

    • @HeadFirstFishing
      @HeadFirstFishing  Před 3 lety

      Haven't used it but it should be just fine. In a 6k to 8k size for good size snapper and grouper.

    Argh! Please give specifics on reels and rods! What size is your Stradic? How long is your St. Croix? Model #? Same for the other setups. Can I order your Hubbard rod and have it shipped to me?
    Otherwise, great video. I am ready to go fishing with you my next trip to Florida.

    Capt, you mentioned that you like the Daiwa Saltiga for large grouper. Which model saltiga were you talking about? Do you sell rod and reel combos at the marina or do you have to go to Bass Pro?

    • @HeadFirstFishing
      @HeadFirstFishing  Před 7 lety

      The size 30 or 40 model is what you need. 40 lbs of drag max.

    How much top shot you usually use?

    • @HeadFirstFishing
      @HeadFirstFishing  Před 4 lety

      It varies and depends on who you ask. 30 to 50 yards should work.

    • @Hisslave1
      @Hisslave1 Před 4 lety

      Top shot on a bottom reel is really counterproductive to what you're trying to do Tim and that is to bring a big grouper out of his home NOW with absolutely the least amount of stretch possible. The same with two speed reels. You want to gain as much line as fast as possible. Drag and speed of retrieve is the key to moving big fish away from obstructions. 2 speed is great on a prolonged fight like a big tuna but not so much on bottom fish. Trolling is a whole 'nother ball game.

      Head First Fishing sea bass, fluke, blackfish, stripers and blue fish. That’s mostly what we have to fish for here in New Jersey. And it’s mostly off of party boats and pier fishing.
