The Thing's Television Version Makes No Sense!

- Years ago I tried watching The Thing on basic cable. I was confused and horrified by what I was seeing and hearing. I decided to go back and watch it again and do this video explaining some of the bizarre changes and edits that made. They even included some deleted scenes that no longer fit in context with the finished movie.

*_Move-censorship breaks down FRAME-BY-FRAME is there's a difference. It's all about the frames._*
They used to have this behind- the- scenes show in the early days of Nickelodeon, called "Standby, Lights, Camera, ACTION!" When they covered this movie, they SHOWED the gaping maw biting Dysart's arms off. On. Nickelodeon.
Sounds awesome.
No way, I remember that! Cool that you mentioned it.
That was a great series!
That was a great series!
That was with Leonard Nimoy? Loved that show.
Now I just want the narrator to describe everything that's happening in every single scene to the audience.
Some DVD's from Universal back in the early 2000's had what's called a descriptive audio track for the blind. The way they describe this movie was INSANE lol
@@I_Drank_WHAT_TTV I actually know what you're talking about, but I never used that feature. Maybe I shoud!
@@sablebranwen2539 seriously! Do it! One of my favorites is The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. I got more entertainment out of the descriptive track than I did the movies lol
Like Quentin Tarantino on The Hateful Eight. “You see Child’s taking a drink of the J&B. But what you didn’t see was what MacReady was doing before. While Childs was busy wandering through the snow, MacReady was filling the bottle full of gasoline. So that’s why this chapter is called MacReady’s Got A Secret”
Oh man, back in the day I despised watching TV cuts because I knew they were so different from the original.
The TV edit of Robocop is actually pretty funny with how it replaced a lot of the cursing and toned down the violence.
"He's an airhead"
“I got the muscle to shove enough of this factory so far up your stupid _fat nose_ that you’ll _blow_ snow for a year.” 😂
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Pretty Damn Good!@@GrosvnerMcaffrey
Casino’s tv edit is the goat
Early TV versions are almost always bizarre. There was a Die Hard movie on TBS where they changed the main antagonist name. There was also a version of Starship Troopers where they changed Michael Ironsides characters last name.
I honestly love the scarface tv version movie, the censors made more sense than the other movies that you mentioned, plus the extra scenes are awesome, Tony's censorship dialog was actually al pacino himself doing all that, the music like the Babylon club scene where the instrumental version of "rush rush get the yeyo" is played insteadthe originalone with lyrics, the ending is more different than the original, and the fall where skull shoots tony was VERY different than the original cut, really love that version!!
John Carpenter's THE THING was one of those movies you bought on tape or rented because it really is a great movie .
The movie made a little profit in 1982 but when it was released on VHS it sold alot
I liked that the end looped the story like a never-ending nightmare. I also liked the TV cut of Halloween 2 with the ending of it having the guy surviving and Jamie Lee saying we made it.
This was the version I saw as a kid and watched all the time. I do remember that some of the changes actually helped me follow some parts of the story. Like when Norris has his heart attack. In the narration it mentions he has a heart condition. In the original version, he just stops breathing during the fight with MacReady without any explanation as to why.
They show him having obvious heart problems lol
@@idiot_city5244 I was a kid! I didn't know anything! :)
@@thomasdoscher6555 I was going to say, at least you got to see it as kid :) I was 17 the first time I saw it. I was a late, horror fan, bloomer. lol
Cheers from Canada
Honestly didn’t know there was a TV Version of this film. Even the opening monologue is as cursed as I thought it would be 😂
Almost horrifying in of itself.
I'm LOVING these mini episodes in addition to the big Monday event.
I've been a long time fan and patreon supporter, and have never been disappointed in a episode.
Rental Reviews used to be the best show on all of CZcams, and you have succeeded and made Hack The Movies even better.
I'm not just blowing smoke when I say that you have the BEST show on CZcams.
Your hard work and passion for movies shines through.
Never stop being awesome Tony.
Also, congratulations on being an uncle! 😁
Crazy how different each version is, from one another. How many edits are there?
There has to be a day, John Carpenter has a chat with your podcast about this.
A deep dive into his brain with this classic
Love the TV Cut reviews! Keep em' coming if you can, Tony!
Thank you Tony, these small shows and great and keep them coming!
Wow! So glad my introduction to The Thing was my Dad’s questionable and scarily detailed verbal descriptions and not this TV version! My Dad was far more loyal to the theatrical…still scared the shit out of me. Amazing film however and turned me onto all things Carpenter!!
I believe I saw this years ago (Tv verison) and there was some minor cuts combined with the deleted scenes, but I still enjoyed it. I also believe they tried to make the edit version close to the original 1950's The Thing from another world.
Btw Tony I also enjoy listening to your podcast at work and it really helps me through my day.
I only saw a handful of clips of The Thing From Another World.
Does it have narration?
@@robk.6591 I think so. In the original thing from another world they had narration during the beginning I believe.
Man, this made me realize that I'm pretty sure I saw the TV version first. I have those vague childhood memories of the TV version's scenes and narration. And I know for a fact I didn't see the theatrical version until my early/mid teens.
Really enjoying these shorter vids. Changes things up a bit. Keep up the amazing work!
Seeing the Twin Peaks sets makes me
Happy. Been doing a rewatch of that series!
That gum you like is going to come back in style
these are fascinating. interesting enough for me to want to know about in condensed form, but not enough to actually watch and see the differences for myself. so very informative
I took your advice on this one and I actually remember it now solely on the addition of the narrator! It's been a lifetime ago since I've seen this so it's almost new to me. I'm subbing to your channel man. I forgot how hilarious the TV versions of any movie was back then! I've got a lot of old VHS tapes I recorded movies off of prime time that I'm gonna go dig out and watch just to see the differences
11:23 It's like Squidward falling down a hill, landing on the ground, then exploding for no reason.
Had no idea there was a mangled and narrated TV version of my favorite film. That's amazing.
I found out after that it'd included on some Blu rays
Funniest TV edit of a movie is Die Hard 2 when John Maclane is arguing with the airport cop in the traffic control tower.
Yippee Kai Yay, Mr. Falcon!
Thank you Super Famous Tony from Hack the Movies. Your videos are great and you deserve everything coming to you and more. Please don’t stop. These videos help me a lot. God bless all of you that work on these videos.
Thank you Uncle Tony, loving these "shorts," full of interesting infos
Really enjoy these videos! Brings back memories of seeing these movies on TV be it for the first time or after seeing the theatrical cut.
For some reason the movie "The Naked Gun" comes to mind for having a bunch of small changes to the TV version.
The narration at the very end is the same speech from the end of the 50's version of The Thing.
I really like this series, more of this!!! Thank you
These are quite fun. Keep up the good work.
Another awesome video can’t wait for the next one
You see what happens Larry find a stranger in the Alps!?!?
BIG LEBOWSKI
Just found your channel. Good stuff. Subbed.
The Thing (1982 version) is still one of my favourite movies, I've lost count how many times I've watched it over the decades. I had no idea there's a tv version although John Carpenter has been screwed over many times by the studios in his career, so I'm not surprised this exists.
I love this type of content ❤️❤️
I think I saw the tv edit a few times as a kid and it being my first experience with the movie. Even these days when I watch the original, it "feels" better than I remember and I wonder if it's because my brain tends to default to the bastard version. Also this is the first video of yours I've seen and talking about one of my favorite movies earns a subscribe.
The TV Cut is included on the Scream Factory release of The Thing
better referred to as a "camp-cut". I think every good film needs one
I hope that Tony reviews the TV cut of the 1987 version of RoboCop period I remember seeing a lot of alternate takes for the gory scenes.
Love you TONY
The Thing and Halloween 2 was a part of a syndication package of Universal films offered to local stations under the banner of "Universal Pictures Debut Network" in the mid 80's. The films first were distributed one for each month. Later, the films were made available to stations as they wanted.
In addition to the violence and sex being cut, deleted scenes were added and sometimes radical changes were made with many films beside these two.
Cat People (1982) actually had an altered ending (the original ending had a lot of sex).
Dune had many added scenes and ran in two parts. It was disowned by the director David Lynch, whose name is replaced with "Alan Smithe"
Both Dune and Psycho 3 began with a prologue made up of what must be concept art, along with narration.
The TV edits of Halloween 2, The Thing and Dune have been officially released as extras on special editions (however, at least Dune is out of print and is pricy on the secondary market).
I know you just did a full Talking About Tapes episode for The Faculty, but the TV version of The Thing reminds me of the equally hilarious TV version of The Faculty. The first time I saw it was on Sy-Fy (back when it was just the Sci-fi channel) and the edits they did, especially for all the language, is so funny! Check it out if you've never seen it!
Weird choices to include some scenes. But it’s basically to pad out the movie after cutting out the NSFTV stuff.
I like these smaller vids on Thursdays keep it up tony from hack the movies
I seen this tv version once, a long time ago probably more than 25 years. So, being that I already had been well versed in the theatrical cut, I knew something was way off when I seen those added scenes that made no sense. Most of those cuts scenes can been seen on expanded dvd versions as extra features. Weird version of the film
We always had the normal version on UK tv, it used to be on after 10 pm though.
I saw the TV version when I was 12 and it actually scared the hell out of me. The terrible editing of the thing itself, believe it or not, creeped me out more because you never really get a good look at the monster.
In some instances, they used to add in extra scenes and dialogue etc. to pad the runtime for television. Longer runtime, more ads. Plus they had to make up for the time they'd already edited from the film. Thanks for this, though. I had never heard the narration before. It sounds very, very similar to the actor who says "keep watching the skies" at the end of the original Thing From Another World. I wonder if it is him. If it is, that's kind of cool that they brought him back for that, even if the narration isn't necessary. EDIT: It can't be him as the actor sadly died in 1960. But it definitely sounds like someone trying to impersonate him.
Thanks for sharing this. Never saw the TV cut. I know that they basically cut down the gore and replace the language then they have to pad it out to 85 to 90 minutes by any means necessary. However it affects the story is of no concern to them. If this is someone's first viewing then shame on them.
I generally like to watch these alternate cuts because they inevitably will add back in deleted footage like with Airplane and Fast Times. Even the 80s Twilight Zone added back in extra footage when the show went into syndication.
This version is also included on the bonus feature disc of the Scream Factory Blu-Ray!
I think the narration at the end of the TV edit was probably inspired by the reporters narration at the end of the 1950s version.
I remember a line that was on a old vhs i used to rent that i never heard in any dvds or other palces. Its when they just touched Bennings, and They standing around Bennings corpse and Mac talking how it could be anyone of them and one of them says «if it imitate us perfect, how do we know we are urself». Never seen that line other places than on that vhs, might be a Mandela effect tho. But that line was one of my favorite parts when i used to rent it
I remember seeing this on the 35th Anniversary Edition BLU Ray from Scream Factory
I never though I would see an Xtro T shirt! That is amazing!!! I want one. You don't see that every day.
Nauls gets killed by a jack-in-the-box thing that was included in the story boards. There were more Norwegian corpse in the outpost scene with McCready. And more footage of the dog running from the Norwegian helicopter with dialogue too. You also see the whole thing creature at the end from head to foot with dog creature wriggling on the ground. They need to release it the way it was supposed too. Uncut and weird.
This TV edit is still way better than the prequel
i would love for this to be an add on in like a special feature for the thing
Call me paranoid but the moment where you went “what did John carpenter think of the tv version?” I was fully expecting you to follow it up with “well let’s ask him!” And John come swinging into the set and die
"Ough heart attack" - * Dies *
I'm curious how much they actually cut out like if anyone has added up the amount of time that they needed to fill because of everything that they cut
my guess for the narration is that they were worried that someone would tune in, be confused about the opening, assumed that they missed something important and turn the channel.. so by adding the narrator it just lets the viewer know that they're still explaining the story. the adr of blair explaining was probably just done for timing reasons
nc. tnx! for sharing film history yet again. 👌❤️🇵🇭
Tony - I don't know why.. but I MUCH more enjoy these one man review/discussions compared to the actual Talking About Tapes.. That's on me though - I'm just really put off by the personality of one of the regulars.
I often give you guys shit in a sarcastic way but I'm being completely genuine here. It vaguely reminds me of one of James's formats but it works really well and I like your own spin/commentary/anecdotes.
As always, thanks for the content and keep up the great work! Hope you guys continue to put stuff out for a long time.
I have only seen the tv version of the movie and still scared me as a kid.
I remember the narration as a kid. I knew I wasn't crazy.
I've only seen the TV ending once but never the opening narration until now.
This version is on the Scream Factory Blu-ray. This must have been a 80's edit. Because I used to have a VHS recording from the USA network 90's cut. It has more gore. But cut shorter for tv. For example the shot of the dog thing is cut down to almost a second. The narrator is not in the USA network version. The chest mouth is in full in this version.
Palmer exploding in tv version is foreshadowing for jaws 4
Oddly, I've never seen that weird narration edit before. It sounds very strange 😂
I remember watching a TV version in the late 80s with my dad after praising the theatrical version I had seen in 82. I can't recall the details anymore, other than the fact they edited huge chunks of the film out including pivotal scenes (which I think had been done in order to cram in more commercials). Of course this made the film completely incomprehensible. Needless to say my dad always hated the film despite the fact I kept telling him that it was a badly edited version of original full length movie.
I’ve never seen this on TV. That narration sounds more like a Trailer for the movie, then part of the film itself. Reminds me of r the TV edit of “ The road warrior”
Thanks!
Thank YOU!
Oh, I remember watching this TV cut. It was on WGN and my interest was peaked given my cousin got me into Carpenter films (Big Trouble in Little China). It killed my entire interest of the movie for years until a friend's Halloween marathon party.
You should do the tv cut of Halloween 5 and 6 I remember it having different stuff in it!
Carpenters The Thing is my fav horror movie of all time, great vid Tony
Long ago I saw a compilation of toned down swearing in a TV version of Robocop. It was hilarious and I never would have gotten to see these versions as a non-American.
good thing our tv was never cutting anything
i saw the defibrilator in my childhood and thought that's one of the coolest things ever i need to watch it later
This was a cool episode cause the thing is like a top 5 movie for me and I had absolutely no idea of this tv cut.
In the pan and scan VHS you couldn't see Kurt Russell throw the dynamite either so it wasn't until I saw it on DVD years later that I realised Palmer didn't just explode for some reason.
To me, the opening narration of the 4 characters you showed seems to be like the narrator is reading the character descriptions from a screenplay.
Nice
I'm going to have to watch The Thing again as I haven't seen it since the 80's.
They did not cut Macready throwing the dynamite that blows up Palmer thing. They were simply too lazy to pan from Macready throwing to Palmer. He is cropped out of the frame.
You should try some more of these shorter form videos. I like em.
Imagine having the ego to think that you could or should touch one second of this movie. The only person I'd let do that would be the horror master himself. Interesting video.
It's very possible that man and you read up since it never happens just there to fill time for the commercial release.
I actually like the alternate Intro. I wish it were included in a Blu Ray of the Theatrical version, I’ve heard there was a extended Directors cut as well
I just realized I have seen this movie probably over a “million times” I watch it and love showing it to people that have never seen it…. But I’ve never actually watched it on cable Tv…. This is interesting.
The narration makes it sound like a documentary, or a re-enactment.
THATS CRAZY!!! I DIDNT EVEN REALIZE HOW BAD IT WAS!!!
Take a good look and you’ll see that Universal was where all of the most egregious and bizarre tv cuts come from. Thing, Brazil, Mallrats, etc.
I'd like to see you do a video on the Return of the Living Dead workprint. There's quite a few alternate takes, deleted scenes, and even an alternate ending.
Its not really an alternate ending. the effect shots for alot of the ending weren't done yet so they just used storyboards for the gaps, I don't think they had filmed the dialog of the phone call....Its not all that different as people make it out to sound.....Its also kinda worthless now that a 4k Scream Factory remaster of it comes out in October.
I was fortunate enough to watch the theatrical cut on one of the premium channels at the time, I wanna say Super Channel, but could be incorrect. Television edits can be fun for a laugh as well as a glimpse into censorship standards of the time. The video is entertaining and hella better than reading about the changes made to a film on a website. I loved this short trip down nostalgia street when one had to plan ahead in order to watch a bit of entertainment. Cheers and have a nice day eh.
First time I saw this was on CBS back in the day when it finally made it to network TV. Later on I sought out the uncut version, much better film left intact.
On a related note, in the theatrical version there's the scene in the kitchen where Nauls is listening to "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder on his boom box. But I have a VHS of "The Thing", which isn't the TV version, but the song has been changed to The Four Tops cover of "One Chain (Don't Make No Prison)". Later when I got the DVD, its back to Stevie Wonder again; weird.
Probably was changed due to licensing issues.
That weird flower thing you’re talking about was actually dog tongues and dog teeth
Inalways watched that movie on tv and it was the theatrical cut…
Woot woot!
Arrows blu-ray release has this version as a bonus in the special features
I remember in the TV version there is a added shot of one of the dead Norwegians that flew in by helicopter lying on a table inside they camp that you clearly see blink his eyes. Like embarrassing noticeable
I was lucky I rented it when i was 10 I never saw the TV cut
