That's actually exactly what the Arcade games did (at least GP2, that's the one I've played most). Though it was less of a cool gimmick and more of a way to reduce dev time, as all of the tracks from the same theme would have the same finish line and surrounding track, then you'd go down a route for that specific track, and then a portal would bring you back to the beginning.
I can't even begin to imagine the technical details behind how you made the nether portal. This is perhaps the single most impressive CT I've seen in this game. Edit: To address the replies, modding an existing game with limited tools is not at all as simple as implementing it into a brand new game. Modders have to get creative within Nintendo's parameters.
I assume it's some kind of shader that triggers and swaps textures if you look through it (i.e. going through the door) but it's incredibly impressive, yeah
Looking at the nether portal in the preview at 0:03 shows how the portal trick works! The track behind the portal has the same shape as the nether itself, but with blocks swapped (cobblestone -> glowstone, for example). The portal seems to just have a custom volume behind it which activates a “nether shader” that swaps textures for more nether-appropriate blocks. This also means that ignoring the portal won’t do anything different, you’ll still end up in the nether I think. No idea how the portal shows the nether when looking through it, though, must be more shader tricks…
The track looks beautiful, and I'm glad it exists. The nether part is so cool. Though here's come constructive criticism: I think that due to the angle that MK plays at, combined with the visual clutter like grass that is on the driving area itself, the track has gameplay clarity issues that prevents it from being anything more than a cute concept. The stage just doesn't warn the player of hazards that are out of their control. On parts like 00:25, it is impossible to see that the track is going to curve behind the small drop. If I drove here for the first time I would drive straight off the track. Same with 00:33, there is no clear enough way of seeing that there is a tree coming up that blocks the right side of the road. Both areas could use taller obstacles along the track that are more visible from afar, even with MK's poor angle. The concept could just overall be executed better on a track that doesn't bend forward/downwards, both due to visual problems, but also because Minecrafts hard blocks complement a really flat and non-bendy stage well.
1) If my mom played this track, she'd rage quit from the difficulty before the finish line. 2) There are no shortcuts - 90% of the balancing items you get in last become nothing more than simple speed increases. If you fall behind, you probably stay there.
i thought the same. i wonder if they could use some thematic items for better clarity? glowstone at the edges of the track in the nether to make it easier to see upcoming turns, and maybe signs or paintings in the overworld?
I wouldn’t say it’s a mechanic in this course specifically but it would be pretty cool for future Mario kart games to have portals because of the potential of the track design.
This is probably the best custom track I’ve ever seen for a Mario Kart game. The attention to detail is stunning, and this legitimately looks like an amazing course to drive on. Kudos to you man, this is next level stuff.
This is insane. The nether portal is obviously the coolest part. Looks like the geometry and collision are the same in the nether so you only need to swap textures. Great job, coolest map I've seen!
Super cool idea for a track! The portal is amazing too, that's a pretty neat technical achievement. It does seem a bit hard to actually race on though. The grass obscures a lot of the track and it's already pretty narrow.
The amount of effort and time you put into this is literally insane, you did an incredible job with everything. Anyways is the nether portal a green screen with a perfect transition or an effect you've made into mk8?
The only track in the game (this is 8 on Wii U) I can think of with a visual effect change on everything the player can see (apart from going underwater) is the “psychedelic” part of Electrodrome, where you drive along the two split green and pink paths. If they used that feature here in this track that’s the only way I can understand how they’ve pulled this off, unless they really did code this effect entirely from scratch which is even more nuts! Either way it’s incredibly impressive
@@HS-mn6jc isnt that part in electrodome just a split path, like theres nothing new about those (besides for being antigrav), and other courses even in the base game have that
Really love the map! It's clear you put a ton of time, effort, and skill into this. My only concern is the design of certain things. There are a lot of overhill segments where it's hard to see upcoming things, specifically the water hazards. They often aren't visible until you're about to fall in them. Also, the nether brick is very hard to see against the dark skybox of the nether. Aside from that, great work!
I have thought of so many great things to say about this wonderful mod of yours and about your talent but none of those things can perfectly communicate how amazing this you and your mod truly is!
Not first, just here to say that this is _incredible_ and I’ve only seen up to 0:48 Question: what happens if you just _don’t_ go through the Nether Portals?
A floating Minecraft infinity loop in the sky, with no land below for miles. Sounds like a scary place to have a race honestly, not to mention lifeless even for Minecraft standards, but I have to admit this was very well done and even a fun track to play on. All the creative ways you altered the coins and boxes to make it feel like a Minecraft cameo level, as well as the nether portal as others have mentioned. Great job!
Wow, Hace tiempo que no veía tu canal, pero aún me acuerdo cuando vi el video de Minecraft en NSMBW y me explotó la cabeza xd. Haz mejorado muchísimo desde entonces, juzgando por este video
I think I know how the nether portal works, and it seems to be purely aesthetic. If you pay attention to the background, the nether portion is the exact same track as the overworld, just with the textures swapped. So going through the nether portal isn't faster or anything, it's just changing the textures. I'd imagine this means other racers can still see you if you go into the nether and they don't.
Is that Nether Portal a video editing trick? or is that actually coded in? It looks really cool. Reminds me of an idea for a Mario Kart track I’ve had: a haunted house track with a similar portal gimmick.
This reminds me of the Digital Dimension course from Sonic Riders in the best possible way, very nice work. I like the teleporting between different realms, very innovative.
This has got to be what the next gimmick in Mario Kart is, having a portal or wonder seed completely transform the track
That’d be awesome
No literally that’s what I thought awhile back a mechanic like this where the entire track shifts into another location or dimension would be SO sick

how does the nether thing even work, what if you avoid taking one of the portals? are other players still visible?
It looks like the nether and overworld versions share the same shape, so it's probably just a visual filter on the track
1:00 you can see cpu drivers driving in nether on lap one before the first nether portal, and going thru the portal and continuing in nether.
It Just share shape with the overworld but its the nether ( visual effect)
Would be neat if the nether was 8x shorter but that might be completely busted
It'd be safer to integrate a small chunk of Nether highway as a shortcut if that effect is desired.@@Solrex_the_Sun_King

The portal option is wild, feels like we're getting a peak at what nintendo might do to revolutionize their tracks for the next game
Possibly, but the way it's implemented here is merely a texture change. The track is identical whether you enter the portal or not.
