As an Australian who always dreamt of traveling to London, but didn't manage to travel until their 50's a few years back... I knew I was in London when I stood at Waterloo bridge at sunset humming this song to myself with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. Absolutely love this song and the kinks, although, I am a Beatles gal 😉 💜
I lived in London in the 80s and loved it , I will forever be an honorary south Londoner . We were in London a few years ago with our now grown up children and as we walked over the hungerford bridge my wife and I ( who holds a note far better than I ) burst in to Waterloo sunset. The kids were a bit embarrassed for a moment and then joined in . At the end we all burst out laughing and had a massive hug. It was one of those family moments that you never forget. People must have thought we were mad !!
The Kinks were recording an Album in Central London and needed One more Track to complete it. They sat on the Roof Terrace of the building and shortly afterwards this Track was completed as they were over looking Waterloo Station. As us people of this era, are aware, Terry & Julie refers to Terrance Stamp and Julie Christie the "It Couple" of our generation.
Got to just say that for me a Londoner growing up in the 60s, the view from Waterloo bridge looking down river when the lights start coming on was, and still is the best view in town. God Bless you Ray...Great Music and Lyrics...Beautifully sung. Thankyou x
One song captured my city. I’m from the same North London streets as Ray Davies. I live thousands of miles away now but this song always takes me home. ❤️
Ray Davies & Jeff Lynne, (ELO), 2 of the most under rated musicians of all time, both deserve a knighthood for services to music !! BTW i still walk across Waterloo Bridge regularly and hum this to myself as it brings back memories of growing up & still living in that part of London !!
Ahh it's so English. The difference between them and the stones/beatles is they stayed English, makes me admirer them more. And the fact Ray is a gooner 😉
@@glennoconnor1130 not sure I like them because Ray is a gunner but I will forgive that little fault and just focus on his genius. He has that very rare quality of appealing to a world wide audience yet keep a particular Britishness about the band. Up the wolves
Zoomer radio turned me on this song... I had lost it to the decades since I last heard it back in the day... wonderful to hear it on the AM radio as it wuz originally
It certainly was chilly, commuting to Waterloo everyday in as an 18 year old back in January, 2004. Even worse with those antiquated slam-door trains and some bonehead shuts your freezing fingers in the door! 🥶😢🤬
Nice that Terence and Julie are both still around....for those who dont know, its refrenced as Terence Stamp and Julie Christie, who the 60's icons and an 'item' at that time !
Good to believe it was true though. Too amazing cool actors. One iconically beautiful the other just about the most versatile actor ever. From fop to super villian!
Not really. It mirrors the state of spirit of the many young people arrived in London, from all over the country, for a better life, but alienated from their family and friends, and trying to make human contact..That is how I understand it....
jake caddy www.loudersound.com/features/the-story-behind-the-song-waterloo-sunset-by-the-kinks It’s an interesting read about how Ray Davies came up with the song 😊
Commuting to Waterloo in the middle of January as an 18 year old going to my first job in 2004 was pretty crap tbh. Particularly after some douchebag shut my hand in the door of those old slam door trains we still had. In Winter, that's also not fun! 👎 Still, the sunset was my favourite time coz it meant I was going home from a crap job.
It's an area of London named after the battle of Waterloo in Belgium as mentioned by Michael. So the main road, station and bridge in the area are also called Waterloo. The station is a large mainline passenger terminal with connections to several lines on the underground and was enlarged to receive trains from the channel tunnel. The London Eye is in Waterloo.

Waterloo station 1960s. I would love to have seen that view. Love Ray's lyrics.

These are 2 of THE most admired musicians in the world.
Probably my favourite song of all time. It goes perfectly with roast beef, Yorkshire puddings and a pint or two of best

Uplifting and well written! Listening to it, I'm in London...
This should be a end credits song for a TV show or movie.
It was for the movie The Last Word (2017)
beautiful tune
A lament for a beautiful time
Such a pretty little nostalgic tune.
The sunset is the most beautiful time of the day!!!!!
Thank you so much! I came here here because Annie Lennox rates this her №1
My favorite song!
Kinks and Small Faces are the most underrated bands of 60's. 😥
Possibly the best lyrics ever written in the whole shebang of music 🎵
Almost agree. There's some Beatles stuff that's right up there, and dare I say Syd Barret.
for me one of the best lines ever 'every day i look at the world through my window'.
Absolute beauty
This song is wonderful
The only band of the roaring 60s & 70s who didn’t need to sing with a yank accent. Brilliant.
Love this song
From someone who used to go to waterloo station on a friday evening to take the train to bournemouth this says it all.
... könnte man den ganzen Tag anhören .....
Very good song bruh

A few year ago I was in London to collect visas for travel, afterward I knew I just had to go to Waterloo Bridge to watch the sunset.

The best number 2 song ever. According to the Guardian. 🤔
A song with this sort of instrumentation could only be recorded in the 1960s.
Now thats song writing

Sorry for the question...what exactly is Waterloo? The river, a town, the subway station... Please tell me.... Thanks!
i think its a place in london but dont quote me on that
The bridge and station get their name from the town in Belgium near where Wellington defeated Bonaparte
