- On the NSB Newton job, we see first hand how Tom Casey Lead Carpenter at NS Builders builds his window casings. We also observe his approach to trimming a window. This is not a standard how to but an opportunity to see a real project in motion.
***We know the center piece is missing. On the day of filming the center board was not ready to be installed. Thank you for noticing!
How do we manage our projects from the big picture all the way down to the smallest detail?

How much would it generally cost to case 16 windows, and how long would it take for a good carpenter to do that many windows?
@@Coolguy-fz5re I don’t know the price because people will charge different rates but a good trim guy can do all in one day unless the windows are way up high.. you will be shocked if you get a bunch of estimates some will be triple
I'm a 63 year old trim carpenter and didn't think anybody put out this nice of work anymore. You have my respect for how nice you did that, especially with the gluing and screwing everything AND using the biscuits on the header. Absolute kudos to you young man, you have my complete respect.
agreed this is very good finish carpentry, I'm on here figuring out how to fix some REALLY BAD finish carpentry that the previous owners did on my house, they didn't even make jambs they literally just covered the gaps with mylar and painted over it...
Same
Gorgeous work!
It's not that there aren't guys who can't do that level of work these days, it's just most people accept a lower standard because of labor costs
I agree with previous comments....but it is also Contractors adding too much profit % on top of labor and materials per job.
The house could fall down but the window trims will still be standing.
Great job.
Not too many craftsman doing this level of work these days.... Great job and a really great video as well
I got to admit this is one of the few videos that actually intimidates me... probably because I don't do enough of this and there aren't enough quality guys like this out there
If you're a remodeling contractor, or worker, on the east coast; you'll do this job so many times, on so many doors and windows, it becomes easy...It's not Rocket Appliances! :)...
That’s why you serve a apprenticeship. Go union
The precision here is crazy! Nice work.
I’ve been doing craftsmanship for over 71 1/2 .3 years and never seen someone do it this great keep it up
Give that man a raise and his own channel! Beautiful craftsmanship, a real joy to watch. Keep them coming. Thanks.
trshuster Tom crushes the video! And install.
Without question! Watching this video almost compelled to throw away all of my tools and just hire someone to do my work. The problem is finding peeps like this with the kind of skills he put on display!
@@Liberty-Grunt any carpenter would be able to do this it's standard work,
@@MegaFunnyman86 that is downplaying the amount of effort it takes to do this kind of work, and no... not every carpenter out there takes the time to do things this detailed work, like clamping the mitered corners to prevent them from opening in the future? I've seen plenty of carpenters simply glue and nail and walk away.
@@CuritaMisfits when making a video to show off their work on CZcams they would
I'm a carpenter and do this stuff all day and I'm watching videos of it when I come home 😂
Great work. 👍

Same lol
Same lol
same.
But we're the guys who try to do things right- which is why we're always trying to learn new and better ways of doing things. cheers to you guys.
same lol
A Master at 25 years old! So good to see young craftsman that truly take pride in their work. I was worried these skills were fading in today's society.
NS Builders...please build my next home. In Missouri.
"Hello from The Land of 10,000 Lakes, Minnesota. My fascination with all things Swiss, craftsmanship and quality led me to you guys. Your tour of the Swiss school was the best, i had no idea but somehow not surprised. Watch making translated to building makes the German approach slack. I then enjoyed your lead carpenter trim out a window on the Newton project. At what point does Tom Casey become a master? Ha ha, like Norm you know who!."
Thanks for your expertise
David J
This guy is a real master carpenter at a young age. Would love to see this video captured again by someone with a little more video camera experience. There were times when it was shaky or jerky and should not have been. And at times the camera angle could have been improved for an overall better-quality video, but thanks for sharing - not everyone is a professional videographer and it takes time and experience to become one. Exceptional quality work by the carpenter Tom Casey.
I don't know why or how I am here, but I could watch him build things all day
That's some great work. I just wish we could've seen just a few seconds more with the entire casing complete. Thanks for sharing.
Why did 299 people dislike this video? I found this video to be very insightful and the man was full of knowledge. It's nice seeing the passion for work as opposed to worrying about what time it is - like some contractors. I wish he did my original windows so I wouldn't have to watch videos on how to fix the first contractor F Up. Thanks for the FREE information on a proper window installation.
Those 299 dislikes are all general contractors 😂
Nice work young fella, thanks for teaching us old guys some new tricks
this type of craftsmanship only exists on youtube and passionate DIY'ers
Great craftsmanship. You just got another sub. Love the biscuits holding it tight for another 50/100 years.
Kudos 👍👍🇺🇲🇮🇪
Good work, brother. Not production work, but craftsmanship that some carpenter will admire in forty years when there's a reno. Craftsmanship take time, time is money, but craftsmanship is also beauty and satisfaction.
I've done rough carpentry but just started working with a high end contractor.
I'm expected to trim out the new windows we installed on Friday, on Monday.
Thanks for this lol
This man is a true Craftsman, so rare
I SEARCHED AND SEARCHED, FINALLY!! GREAT VIDEO BRO, I APPRECIATE YOU
And who said craftsmanship is dead in America. Great video and great work!
Wow, Amazing work, Total Perfection.Tom Casey is the Tom Brady of Carpentry,
Now that's a man that knows how to do trim. Love his work. 2 thumbs up!!
Very well done! How a trim piece is terminated is one of those little tells that indicates a carpenter as someone you'd want to call back for more work.
The greatest display of I’ve seen on how to finish a window. Thank you for sharing. Stuff like this makes me want to become a carpenter.
(P.s. the audio on this video was slightly distracting. But the quality of craftsmanship was outstanding.)
Superb craftmanship and great eye of detail. I like that oversized trim was used. It makes the end result far more impressive. Thanks for putting this together.
Super video. Finish carpentry is the top of food chain in woodworking. The time and effort required to be able to enhance the home is what helps to sell the home. Thanks for sharing. It's fantastic and it took you a long time and effort to learn. You, sir, are a true professional. Thx again.
Hard to find someone who takes that much pride in there work. Amazing job
It is so wonderful to see a young man do such fine work. Well done sir!
This guy is a pro. I've been doing trim a long time and this guy crushed it
Man, that is excellent work! Titebond with screws, those joints will never split or shift and crack the paint.
Shocked. I'll be watching this a few times on the tv.. Gotta get some other tools as well.. Bless this dude
I know this video is a couple years old, but wanted to thank you for it anyway. Lots of good info here. May prove to be useful for my upcoming house build! Cheers guys!
I cant believe how much effort was put into that. Very professional. Looks great.
Give him a raise!!
Nice to see a REAL pro in action... thank you.
Watching this video is why i'll hire someone to do it.
Wow. This is some high caliber work. Top notch.
Can’t say that I have ever seen anyone use adhesive on the backside of casing. may be a little overkill but I can appreciate it man. strive to do the best job you can possibly do. great job!!
absolute PROFESSIONAL! Wow! Unbelievable work by this guy.
Craftsmanship! I love the spring clamps he used on the mitered returns!
Ya that was super cool. Weird carpenter dentistry or something. Lol
WTF? This guy is amazing. I love that there are still craftsmen like him in the world. I had zero idea what he was saying but that is the point (in my mind).....LOL ... great video
Nice to see people take pride in their work
Where do you find such craftsman? In every video you have people who are putting extreme care and precision in everything they do.
Oh….So this is what a Master Carpenter looks like🤔🤔🤔…GREAT WORK
You should be very proud of the work you do.. Trim work is fantastic.
This guys is the real deal. Outstanding work, thanks for sharing a fantastic video of your craftmanship
holy guacamole this dude kicks ass .... what a PRO. great content dudes!
Keeping craft alive. I see so much shoddy work out there, it makes me glad to see good finish carpentry. (Never thought of a caribeaner for the spring clamps, great idea)
Sergey Pober really good storage solution. I remember my days with the bags on I’d have the clamps piled in a pocket. Far less efficient.
Oh yeah , was wondering what those were. Brilliant.
one word… QUALITY! ❤
So satisfying to watch a craftsman do his thing...Big Props.
Thank you guys for sharing your craftsmanship. Keep raising the standard -C
Beautiful craftsmanship. This video was such a pleasure to watch! Thank you for sharing.
Tom is very talented. Would like to see more of him on upcoming videos. Thanks for the channel.
Is this Tom Casey???? I grew up with him 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Exemplary professionalism; Tom Casey would be worth whatever he charged.
Excellent video What a professional look. I am upgrading 16 windows from my old house. You just gave me all the info I needed to do this project.
You sir, are a true craftsman. Nice work.
Oh my gosh. Such beautiful finish carpentry. ❤
Honey, you are a thing of beauty!!! Oh not just talking about the gorgeous tattoos, watching to get an idea of how it's done, no way could come close, already have the drapes that will cover my crappy attempt, my biggest problem is the terms, all in all, a great video. Thanks for taking the time.
Great to see a clip with one of your guys going in depth on his craftsmanship. Love this and all your videos!
Andrew Clum so cool to see the other guys grab the reigns
Wow wow!!! That’s freakishly awesome!!!
Thank you for sharing your technique and knowledge!!!
Definitely saving this for my spring project of trimming my windows for a nicer look! ❤
This video is so helpful! Just getting ready to tackle the trim in our house. Great video, thank you for sharing your talent
Bravo and well done. Loved the video.
Nothing beats a pro at his job. 👊
Indeed perfectionist. Bravo.
Did notice you were nailing across the grain. No no on stained finishes.
WHOA!! Talk about talented!!!
Superb !!! I am a mechanic but I really enjoyed your presentation!
My favorite window trim video out there! What happens in the space between the two windows? Wood? Drywall? Paint?
Watching these guys i have to step my game 🆙
exceptional talent and attention to detail! NS builders make sure you pay this man I have come across so many that claim to be craftsmen but couldn't shine his shoes. I would love to see how he would handle trimming a window where the walls aren't straight and the jamb extensions need to be scribed
I enjoy finding ways to do things better and this is great. Much appreciated !
One of my fears ,but this is absolutely one of the purest workmanship I have ever seen
Wow so great to watch a master craftsman. Now I know just how low my skills are.
You clearly know what you are doing. Mind sharing some of what you know? Like defining what a “reveal mark” is? Basic stuff that will help a wider audience.
Just search "reveal mark window"
This is super clean. About to have ours replaced on our older home.
Beautiful! You make it look like artwork. Thank you. So very nice.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Great video on exactly how to do this beautifully. Subscribed!
Casing done right! Thanks for posting.
Great to see quality workmanship - Keep up the super work
Love me some perfectionism. Beautiful job!
This guy is amazing, such beautiful work!
What a beautiful art! I can't hope to get mine as accurate
Thank you for the detailed measurements!!
6:40 when you’re putting window boxes together instead of bending over on the floor I took two blank interior hollow doors and added hinges and flip it open on 4 saw horses and have a flat surface to build boxes if slight unlevel I use a shim on corners to level and makes it so much easier to build boxes two hallow 32” doors make almost a square and it’s on saw horses so at waist level. Save your back dude I was young once and seemed fine but it will get you when you get close to or over 40.
That’s a great idea, I will copy when I next do some work on the house 😀
First thing I do on a trim job is set up 5/4 MDF on horses. It’s imperative to have a good flat work bench on a job. Great attention to detail in this window trim. When I’m doing returns on aprons or pediments I always glue and pin nail the small returns before application.
@@Johnlt13 do you find you need 3 saw horses to stop the table from drooping or is the mdf strong enough with just the 2 outsides supported?
@@hopefully2alpha 5/4 MDF is pretty strong. If I use 3/4 I’ll toss a few studs down first. My biggest issue with making a bench on the job is everyone puts something on it. A flat surface always becomes cluttered. 🤷♂️
I was looking up videos to do this myself but now I think I'll hire a pro lol, at least I'll be able to ask a few intelligent questions
That's real Art my friend , good Job
For all the festool haters, there is a reason he's using a lot of festool gear just look at the quality of the work. Not that a craftsman can't use other tools, just makes life easier in a lot of ways
All the windows in our home are "trimmed" by simply wrapping the drywall and textured paint around the corner and up to the sash. It makes the house feel like it was built with Lego. I can't wait to start putting on real trim like this and give the house the style it deserves.
Wow I wish I could have you do my work.
Its so hard today to find good quality workers who take pride in their work.
Thank you! Well done, I learned quite a bit from this video.
looks great. still waiting for that center fascia board, but it looks great.
WOW!! amazing work. wish i could work for him for a year! wish i would have seen this a flong time ago
I really enjoy your videos lots of knowledge. Great job
wow.. very very detail and so much work to do....!!!!! amazing job
Oh my gosh that's gorgeous do another video, please be more detail on the construction aspect. I want!!! Leah said , I CAN DO IT!!!
If I was the painter contractor I'll be glad to do it. Amazing work.
I have seen many finish / trim carpenters on the job site as I am a self employed finish carpenter. I noticed you used the festool domino here i just used 15 gauge finish nails and glue the tack it to the wall.
I call it a window sill you call it a stoop must be the cola, pop, soda expression depends in where you live.
Very nice bro. Been doing this for years, but learn something everytime. Thx!
