  • This video battle is on the 2019 Mazda CX-5 DIESEL vs the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Turbo Gasoline. This will serve as a first look at Skyactiv D or Diesel. The Diesel CX-5 Mazda has been highly anticipated and this will be one of the first reviews on the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Diesel.

      The last time Mazda offered a diesel powered vehicle was back in the 1980s. It was available on the Mazda B2200 pickup truck. I was way too young to drive at the time. But I remember a number of Japanese car makers sold in the USA were offering diesel engines, or turbo diesel as option. Sadly, none of them were on the market for very long before being discontinued. I think the USA is long overdue for a diesel powered car. Why should Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz be the only cars to be offered with diesel engine?

    I picked up a new CX5 diesel in Ohio for $28900 back in Feb 2020. I love the diesel power delivery. My real world efficiency is 32.5 city / 35 highway mpg. You will see the real difference between the 2.5NA / 2.5 Turbo / 2.2 diesel when you load the vehicle full of people/gear and or tow a trailer (I do both). I haul a 6x12 enclosed trailer and the diesel pulls it effortlessly with about 17mpg while the gas motor struggles and returns 9mpg. Really satisfying vehicle. My thanks to all the people afraid of it ... Made for a great deal for me!! ;-)

    As in Europe they don't offer the CX 5 - 2.5 gasoline turbo I choose the 2.2 Diesel CX 5 only after I've made drive tests with Tucson, new RAV 4 and the CRV. With that strange compression ratio for a diesel of 14.1 and those more that the usual 4.000 rot./min + the so called "twin turbo" the engine is punchy and the car is the most fun to drive from all those mentioned before. It has the smallest booth but is really beautiful with that long bonnet. At least for our crowded roads the 6 speed automatic is more than enough. Well done Mazda!

    Whilst Mazda's have always been great cars, I owned a 929, for awhile there they were a bit Meh, but since the competition by Hyundai/Kia they've really picked their game up and are one of the best manufacturers you can possibly go to now.
    And we're really lucky here in Australia as we've had the diesel cars for awhile and they're really good strong engines with good reliability.

      Yea the old days were not so hot for Mazda similar to Kia Hyundai they made a complete 180 and changed their company for the better. I think their one con is that they focused a lot on driving dynamics and are now kind of compromising the ride whereas Kia Hyundai drives really well in their own right but maintain a nice ride. Love both and I can certainly appreciate Mazda quality I’m very excited for their inline 6 RWD sports sedan to come out!

    @2up2down14 Před 4 lety +6

    Once again, very good review! While I have not yet tried the turbodiesel, I wanted to comment on the useable "quickness" of the naturally aspirated vs. turbo. During the 25k miles on my '17 CX-5, I FREQUENTLY needed to dip 60 to 80 % in on the throttle in normal driving conditions to safely pass, merge onto the freeway, etc. I had to use sport mode at times to get more power. 15k miles into my '19 CX-5 turbo, I RARELY get beyond 30 to 40% throttle because of the amount of low end torque. I don't use premium gas because the torque is the highlight of this engine and you get all 310 ft lbs on 87 octane! I assume the diesel will be the same. In my opinion, the power differences are very noticeable and the only "negative" for the turbo is the reduced gas mileage. Either way the CX-5 is an easy driving, fun, well handling, easy to maintain vehicle.

    • @MeynMotorGroup
      @MeynMotorGroup  Před 4 lety +2

      Thanks again for your kind words and for your great input. Yea the Turbo is really great a very nice amount of Pepe to have in a vehicle the size of the CX-5. Its got everything you need and I love how the turbo reacts it’s almost like a BMW pretty much no lag.
      You are right the diesel is similar to the Turbo Gas, it’s a torque monster so when you want to merge it will feel similar to your turbo. Great fun SUV no matter what engine you get. Thank you again for watching!

    I like the punchy torque delivery, and its effortless performance on the highway. Claimed fuel economy is 5.3L/100km, and I am getting something like 6.2-6.3L/100km in cool weathers and spending more time on the Highway, and something close to 7L/100km in the high summer and more time in urban environments.
    Can’t complain a lot after all.
    On the issue of longevity, some of the fellow drivers have quite some issues with the engines barely over 100k kms, usually with the DPFs and the sump under the engine.
    Spend more time and effort in clearing the DPFs as well as minimize idling with the engine for air-con, hopefully it would be doing better.

I test drove the signature with the turbo (Mazda 6) and while I was definitely loving the interior, the tech SUCKED and it didn't have AA or AC at the time to make up for it and the driver Dynamics weren't impressive either. They definitely don't have a long road ahead of them if they want to be a luxury brand. But unlucky for them they have a history of sportiness too so now they've got to find an affordable way to accommodate a bit of both and still think they're gonna compete with BMW's... I'll be optimistic for now but the only way I can see this happening is if prices go way up, somewhere within or maybe slightly beyond fully loaded full-size sedans. There's just no way to pack in good tech AND have interiors like Mazda AND throw in a healthy engine and have it be under $40K. Stinger was already $52K MSRP and that's without an interior that'll really blow anyone away. I genuinely like the way Mazdas feel when you push them but both the Mazda 6 and CX-5 ride noticeably harsher than rivals.
      I don't think it is an offensive ride but you do notice it. It is something I can personally put up with and I think they have been nailing it with the engines but when Hyundai and Kia are making really great cars for such an affordable price, I understand why one would sway that way because I've owned these Korean cars and they're excellent.
      It's a matter of preference, the Mazda 6 is great in its class but it is by no means an M5 killer or something I just appreciate what they've been able to do for under 30k as long as you don't tick all the boxes

    A diesel cx5 seems pointless.For the price you could get a tesla.

    I believe you are the first in a CX-5 diesel review. Overpriced, especially for the negligible increases in fuel efficiency. Make mine a Grand Touring Reserve. The 2.5T has more torque and performance for less money than the diesel. Mazda needs their upcoming EV now.

      It would have been nice if they could offer the diesel in at least one other cheaper trim but I suppose they wanted to limit it to the people who really want a diesel Mazda

    I've loved my Diesel GT... But don't think for a second it's any more reliable than a petrol... Just google CX-5 Diesel problems / engine seizure... I and many many others are left with $50K lemons.

      @@MeynMotorGroup errr there's problems.... And then there's engines catastrophically failing in less than 4 years. It's not something like a window sticking or a squeak on the suspension. This is $15k engine replacement stuff. Not to mention the $3500 rear subframe assembly to change a simple rear diff bushing that failed at 100k. These things are huge dollar repair bills.

    Actually AVOID diesels from Japan. Japan is not good at making diesels as the Americans and the Europeans do, even Toyota has reliability issues with its diesels

    • @pxman1946

      My understanding is that the Japanese were attempting to make Diesel engines to be as efficient as the European ones, not realising at the time that European manufacturers were lying..
      The Japanese made them efficient but seemingly also fragile. The soft alloy isn't great when your head gasket blows. Its a new engine.

      Maybe 30 years ago when european car makers made diesel engines for japanese manufacturers..
