    Really good layout construction section. For years I've been using foam construction and, like you, have found it makes for quick and simple modification and improvement of even large portions of a layout. I enjoyed seeing the CRANDIC again. I had a chance to visit the layout many years ago while I was living in Denver. It was interesting to get a glimpse of the changes made. Thanks for showing this great N scale layout.

    Really enjoyed the information about the Stack Packs, Mike knocks it out of the park in scratchbuilding these flatcars. The Fn3 layout is outstanding, especially the night time running. and LED lights inside the structures.

    I have been practicing my mea culpa's - I messed up in the opening interview by incorrectly naming the prototype railroad name that ran near my boyhood home. The correct name of the prototype railroad is the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City while the name of my N scale model railroad is the Cedar River and Iowa Central.
    There was a question in the comments about the semaphores. They are scratch built and do work. You can see the upper semaphore move at about 15:40 in the video.
    There was a comment about seeing Kansas City being in the segment. Yes, the N scale Crandic runs geographically from Kansas City, MO to Central Iowa.
    Considering my nervousness and the short time Ken was here and his objectives, I think he did a great job putting the whole segment together. Thanks, Ken

    What a great job, Ken, in bringing Pat Lana's N scale layout to MRH's monthly "What's Neat" podcast. Pat created an amazing layout. Please bring more N scale coverage to MRH's future shows! After all, N scale remains the 2nd most popular scale in North America among model railroaders. But somehow N scale seems to still receive third-rate coverage. I know you and MRH can improve this. Thanks, once again, for your outstanding May podcast featuring such an "N"credible layout among many other fascinating topics!

    I really enjoyed Mike Budde's stack pack presentation. My favorite modeling period is nearly the same as Mikes, late 1970's thru early 1980's - D&RGW for me. Like MIke, I have been drawn to some models that are a bit on early edge of that 1977's year - the ExactRail Ver-a-pac's, which were also a niche type auto carrier although they were in service a little longer IIRC. Very interesting series on the Stack Pac's and thanks for sharing. Cheers, Jim Fitch

      We love N scale and always want to find more layouts, but you realize there's 1/3rd as many N scalers as HO scalers. So the supply of N scale layouts is likely 1/3rd fewer layouts compared to HO scale. Just saying ... we can't manufacture more N scale layouts than HO layouts out of thin air (wink).

      @jonathanjones35 Před 6 lety

      Patrick Lana Pat, thank you for your reply. As scratchbuilt items, this semaphores are really impressive. My current layout prototype used two-bladed semaphores, but my initial choice was to use searchlights since the semaphores are not commercially available. How can I get more information on how you built yours? Perhaps some photos and a list of materials and techniques would help me understand how you made them. I visited your layout perhaps ten years ago with the Great Basin Getaway crowd. My friend Brian Marotta introduced me to you. Your layout ended up being the one that encouraged me to change to n scale. It showed that fine modelwork, scratchbuilding, and operation could be done in N despite prevailing opinions at the time.
