Great leaf chopping, I put my leaves in a 55gl garbage can - then run my weed wacker in it until all is reduced. That way I get a volume of chopped leaves to grind in my grinder. Love your shows!
Today, I saw a train with a caboose! It was just a NS locomotive, pulling heavyweight flat car carrying a giant GE jet engine wrapped in white plastic, followed by a caboose -- and not a rusted out piece of junk either, but a shiny modern clean fancy caboose!

Lok-Sound's in house Guru, blew my mind with ALL of the different sound files - including different variations of the SAME prime mover!

Really enjoyed everything in this whats neat segment. The ESU Loksound piece is particularly good and I will be getting loksound decoders for more of my locomotives. Can't wait to get my RS18u locos built and some great decoders in them.
man I love your videos I watch them every month, im really excited to see the lumber mill take shape Im doing a lumber theme n scale layout so watching yours being built will help me get an idea of how I should do mine can't wait also gotta give it up that your in Oregon Woot woot me to lol

Ken always a pleasure to watch your videos. You should consider doing a hour long show divided up into 2 parts. You have enough materiel to spread out and give yourself some time to go into more detail. that building a diorama section could have taken up this entire episode.
I always love these... and you know what I would LOVE to see, is a segment like the "Carving Track Profiles in Foam" segment, using EZ Track! I see the amazing work that Ken has done with EZ Track on the EZ Model Railroads cover, and seeing how I'm building my first small layout with EZ track, I would love to learn how to get a realistic look from it! How would I even go about ballasting the turnouts? I just got my supplies today to start building... my bench work is done, and I'm stuck using 1" pink foam (because that's as thick as they sell in this G-d forsaken desert) but with the height of the EZ track road bed, I think that's going to work. I'm modeling a desert scene... "Old West", but as envisioned on a Hollywood movie set, so operations will be things like getting passenger cars ready for a scene, or getting freight cars ready for a scene... and of course, a MofW set to keep the studio set tidy, and operating for the next film crew, and production company. (a freelanced, "what if" movie sets allows for a believable collection of engines and cars, so I can run anything from the old Norris engines, and the John Bull to more modern steam, and maybe one day I might even buy a diesel)

Ken, you've produced yet another outstanding "What's Neat" episode. I thoroughly enjoyed your realistic terrain modeling technique for water flow around track roadbeds as well as the ESU segment about prime mover sound variations.
But this episode also marks the second in a row without anything N-scale related. Again, I encourage you to feature more about N scale model railroading.
It still remains the second most popular scale worldwide enjoyed by model railroaders, so you're overlooking a vast audience by not featuring N scale coverage.

Terrain modeling techniques shown work great for N, ESU tips apply to their Micro decoders too, which fit in N scale locos fine. Benchwork methods can be used on an N scale layout too. There are very few topics that need to be N scale specific to be applicable just fine to N.
Yes, Ken, the topics you mentioned in your reply apply to all scales and not just N scale. They are great topics, to be sure. But what you neglected to address was why the last 2 episodes did not include any topics specific to N scale only. I hate to say it, but you're almost starting to sound Trumpian with your evasiveness and excuse-making.
Again, I encourage you to expand your coverage to include more features particular to the world's second most popular model railroading scale and its giant fan base, regardless of whether or not Bachmann is your client.
I hope at least your July 2017 episode of "What's Neat" will devote some attention to the National N Convention to be held next month in Pittsburgh.
How can your online magazine live up to its name "Model Railroad Hobbyist" when it continues to exclude targeted, specific coverage on such a large segment of the hobby? I don't believe Model Railroader magazine ever published 2 consecutive issues without including a single topic specific to just N scale. If MR can do it, why can't MRH?

Seeing you hook 3 street lights to one port on the light hub, I was wondering if you can do this with the LED stick on by splicing 3 into one. I am building the Walters 4 bay Fire Station with full interior , trucks and office first floor. Living quarters and office on 2ed floor. Hope to here from you . Thank you, Scottie

Great video. Have a question though, I will be starting a new layout in a house I currently bought. My first lay out I just use I piece of foam, you're using three, any advantage for doing more then one?
Easy! More depth. With 3 layers, you can carve deep canyons, rivers, waterfalls, whatever you want! It's just more material to work with.
That's awesome! Love the scenery and I love loksound decoders! One question though: has there been any talk of expanding their variety of horns and bells, and whistles for steam files? I feel like that's the one aspect they're somewhat behind on. It may just be me, and there may be more of those soundfiles then I know of, but it seemed like there isn't the same variety and playability as TCS wowsound.
There's a whole new line of Full Throttle Steam files being released currently. Plenty of new whistles and other steam sounds.
ESUDCC ah ok. Any new horn soundfiles in the works for diesel decoders?

Ken Patterson I clearly hit a sore spot. I am sorry for all you are dealing with. I appreciate what you do through your show. I wasn't asking for N scale segments, just for a response. Thanks. I hope all works out and goes well for you. I was trying to be critical, just curious. I appologize if I came across that way.

Excellent presentation on all topics ! Why do the LED's appear to flicker on UP Challenger? I wonder if the duty cycle governing LED brightness is being picked up by the video sampling. Whatever's happening, I think the LED persistence probably looks okay live. After all, AC Incandescent bulbs flicker 60 times a second but nobody notices.
I have that problem with Broad way limited.. the Pensey t1's were good run bys but never got used because of the head light on and off and on and off.........It just doesn't look good on video...
where do you get the foam from?
Joshua Toro - if you're in the Southwest like I am, the GOOD foam is few and far between. 😖 Home Depot has some down here, but usually no thicker than 1 inch....
Does anyone else just use plaster cloth like I do anymore? To be honest I find it faster, easier, and cleaner than getting that foam absolutely everywhere.
