    "in the old days they would take 4-5 years to change a rule" - Gus, they literally brought in the limited tackle count rule, believe it was originally a 4 tackle set, between round 4 and 5 of a season in the 60s.

    • @holcable
      @holcable Pƙed 21 dnem

      Imagine as a player, playing one weekend under unlimited tackles and then turning up next weekend and being told you only had 4 tackles before you had to hand the ball to the opposition. A rule that, alongside the play-the-ball and having 13 players, now defines the sport.

    • @daleviker5884
      @daleviker5884 Pƙed 21 dnem +1

      Cool story, except that it's not true. The change from unlimited tackles to four tackles happened from the beginning of the 1967 season. I saw my team at pretty much every game that year and can say 100% the change applied from round 1. Four tackles became six tackles in 1971.

    • @holcable
      @holcable Pƙed 21 dnem +1

      @@daleviker5884 I will take your word for it and nothing I can find says otherwise, apologies thought I'd heard it on a podcast. Either way, it was a very quick introduction.
      Doing some reading though and it looks like the poms introduced it first after the season had begun, but initially the two teams had to agree before the game on whether they were to use limited or unlimited tackles which sounds completely bizarre.

    • @daleviker5884
      @daleviker5884 Pƙed 21 dnem +1

      @@holcable It's true that the poms came up with the specific idea, and maybe that's true about the two teams, I don't know. But I can say from being around then, that the idea of limited tackles was being talked about on and off for a few years before it came in. The biggest driver was television, where England was ahead of us, and they wanted more even contests. But in Australia, a lot of fans saw it as a way to bring St George back to the field. The Poms came up with the specific rules for four tackles in our 1966/67 off season and we adopted it too for the start of the season. When four tackles became six, I can't specifically remember which round it happened in, and it's possible that's what the podcast was talking about. I do remember it was very popular when it was changed.

    the whole approach to refereeing needs to change. The abuse they cop stops the good refs from ever starting, the abuse the players get away with is ridiculous, the on field coaching by the refs has to stop, on field decisions must be made in preference to a fine from the match review committee the week after, consistency of decisions must take place instead of being scared of coach reactions. If its a penalty offence its always a penalty offence not just a penalty until its an important moment of the game.

    jwh was soft. keary got hit later in the game and was fine. rules weren't followed and implemented in that game plus storms last try was from a pap knock on and forward pass. the lending rule was can't make contact with defenders then changed it this year to no lending at all. refs and nrl are pathetic and gus is right, nrl has no idea how to run the game.

    NRL = No Real Leadership.
    Forget Vegas distraction, the standard of the refs in the NRL are terrible. Not helped by cop out subjective rule changes, and obsession with what the bunker can and can't rule on. I don't care who rules on what happens, who sees it best. Most of all getting it right, is the only thing that matters.
    Also, dumb rules like 6 again, reinforce refs subconscious biases towards "the team expected to win". With refs never held to account on why they give them? When they give them? Why they don't give them?
    Forget growing the game, until refs standards are a lot better, and rules made "black and white". Aka scrap rule changes like 6 again, that favor certain teams over others.

    Look forward to the day Gould is retired. So sick of his cranky personality and arrogant high regard for himself and own opinions. He's a self-opinionated bully. Always blaming people, referees, nrl management and normally whoever has a different opinion/thinking to him.
