Thanks you for your comments! I do my best to keep up with them for the first few days after a video comes out, but due to the volume of comments on all of my videos, and to the general hustle and bustle of life, I must give up the fight after a while. If you are leaving a question four or more days after a video comes out I can't guarantee I'll see it, but perhaps one of my other viewers knows the answer and can help out. Thanks in advance to those who contribute and share their knowledge. Cheers and stay safe everyone!

A XL833C was my first bike. It may have been called half-a-Harley, but it was fun, looked and sounded great. Only traded it in for a Heritage because I started doing longer rides. But the Sportsters hold a special meaning to me. The new Sportsters just aren't Sportsters to me.
Sportster 883 owner since 2004 (first rubber mount year). Best and funnest bike ever! I still have it and intend to have it as long as I can. 67K miles on her now and no major problems since new. Extremely reliable and easy to work on.
Yep. Harley's reputation for poor reliability is largely a relic of the 70's AMF bikes and the fact that so many older Harleys are still out there. I found my Sportster pretty reliable too.
2004 sportster 1200 converted, dynatek ignition, unsure of what cams were put in. Memphis shades detachable windshield, saddleman seat, HD bags. It's been a great machine! Done many long distance trips with zero issues. Will NEVER sell it..

Spot on! We spoked about this yesterday, some friends and I. No way any of us would go with the new Sportster.
The Sportster was their best bike in my opinion. It was an every mans bike. Endless customization! With this move and having no beginner offerings, I feel Harley has shot itself in the foot!
I hope they have some 750s in the works.
It had a healthy aftermarket because literally everything about that bike was garbage.
@@altortugas5979 u dum
If by “dum,” you mean, “someone who states the obvious,” then I agree with you.
@@altortugas5979 I respectfully disagree. A person buying a Sportster knows exactly what they are getting into. It is a bike for people who love to tinker, customize, or build!
I have owned 15 motorcycles over the years and ridden many more but the only one still brings back memories of having so much fun on it was a 2009 Sportster 883 Custom. That motorcycle was so much fun to ride, I never wanted to go home when I was on it! So yes my answer is the Evo!
I love those Customs. They're some of the best looking Harleys IMO.
I have loved Sportsters since I was a kid (48 now). Last year I knew the end was near for them, so I traded in my Fat Boy and brought a “48”. I absolutely love the “48”. It’s not a highway bike. I do ride from gas station to gas station. But the bike turns head’s everywhere. I pull in and i always get someone coming up to me asking about the bike. And that is a great feeling.
I bought a 48 last week. I picked it up because I have had so many over the years and it's the last year. My first HD was a 1988 1200, the first year 1200 Evo. I think you said you bought a Roadster for your wife before? Anyway the 48 just looks cool. Rides rough, a little funky handling, but what a fun little bike. I've replaced the seat, added a rack and windshield so far. I also plan on ordering slipons, to listen to that sweet sound!
Not sure slipons would do it justice
The cult of the Sportster will live on. Like you said, you can build a complete Sportster with aftermarket parts: no other bike or manufacturer can make that claim. I really hope we see a 750 flat track inspired Rev Max bike. That would be pretty much an ideal motorcycle. I am making my Fat Bob into a resemblance of one, albeit in looks only. I've taken it on a gravel road once, it was fun but boy was it sketchy!
Definitely not made for gravel but really fun on the road. I've ridden them and was impressed by the torque and handling. For the dirt, I'd recommend a KLX300. Must be some nice mountain logging roads out there.
This video expresses the same viewpoint I have about the Sportster. I recently purchased a 2022 Sportster 48 because I’m an old rider feeling nostalgic. I love the sound none of the other new models can replicate. I love the raw, mechanical, feel of the Sportster. It’s not a metric bike, doesn’t want to be a metric bike, and it will never be mistaken for one. It’s the closest thing to the Harley I rode in the 1970’s. There will be a run on the Sportsters as the last new ones are bought up. I’m not worried about support for this discontinued product. I think support for the iconic evolution engine will be around a long time. The soon to be Sportsters of yesterday will continue to have a big following in the future.
Black holes don't weigh anything because they don't exist. Love your stuff, as always
Having visited a few HD dealerships over the last year, I can now say that HD just doesn't have any current models that do anything for me whatsoever, except for the 48. The two that I did like, they've recently dropped - the Slim and the Deluxe. But, to be frank, I wouldn't buy any of the new Softails (2018-2022) - they just don't at all feel or sound or look as good as the pre-2018 Softails and Dynas. So I guess I'll be sticking with used HDs going forward. My current wheels are the 1200 Low - a chromed-out, laced wheels beauty, which I plan on keeping till I can't ride anymore. RIP Sportster.
Yep. I have a feeling the old Sportsters will never truly die. Too many of them around and too many enthusiasts to keep them running.
Sad end of a long chapter. I'm thankful for my 2019 48. It was, and is my dream bike.
Thank you for a great summary on the subject!
'96 Evo Sportster 1200 owner here. Absolutely love it.
Ah, the MoFoCo. When does heritage stop being an anchor and become a millstone? Regardless, it looks like HD corporate has cut the rope. Props to you for seeing this coming long ago. Cheers.
Yep, they were forced to do it by the Euro emissions. Hell, if it wasn't for Indian I'm sure they'd still be churning out twin-cams.
@@DifferentSpokesTV I agree. Indian’s being in competition has forced HD to improve product quality in several ways. Great content, as always.
Thanks!
I've put seat time into a Forty Eight and my 883 Custom. The 48 was all right but couldn't see myself trying to commute with the tiny tank. Also felt the handlebars were buzzy as they don't use a riser bushings and directly mount them.
Definitely not a bike aimed at practicality. The 883 with its bigger tank is the better choice for commuting.
One additional comment. The issue with pricing will be interesting because ages ago many asked BMW why they dropped the 850 boxer from the lineup and soldiered on only with the 1100+ models and their statement was to the effect that both cost nearly the same to produce but obviously one had to sell for a lot less. In effect, variations on engine size don't affect the cost nearly as much as the components surrounding it.
Interesting point. Makes you wonder why bother with an 883 or a 975 at all.
Now they make a 310
I brought home a 2021 Iron 1200 last week. So there will be at least one Evo Sportster rolling around my neighborhood for the foreseeable future.
Love your channel, great writing and presentation 👍
Thank you so much 😀
I'm an owner of a 2006 xl1200l. I have a rubber mounted evo sportster (last year of carb) its the BEST!!!
Had a 1st year 1988 1200 ,bought that year, sold after 12yrs of ownership, sad too sell, wish I hadn't, but for a older person I love my 91electra ,but the older I get the bike gets heavier, that's where the sportster comes back to mind.
Not as comfy but lots of personality.
Even some of us miss the days of Honda inline 4s. Then they went to the v2. Now their off with a parallel twin. I do miss my CB 750.
I still have my 1992 750Nighhawk basically same engine.Only thing I dislike is gas tank. love those old CB tanks and hard to find.Been looking and looking....
Was always wondering how come they can't put the 975cc in the 48 so that can continue. Sad seeing that iconic 48 disappear
The rumor is the new LiveWire Company will come out with an electric bike with a potato, potato sound track from their OVO, Old Vehicle Operations line.
Why not? Go all ironic on us :)
HD may have discontinued production, but the Evo Sportster will never be dead.
I'm happy to have gotten one (48) before they are difficult to aquire.
Sportsters, Forty Eight and Iron are the best bikes Harley makes/made. The big baggers are great for Women who love heated hand warmers and butt warmers and floor boards and other 'comfy' things. I love my straight bikes...my SPORTSTERS.
The natural, and logical conclusion after the last couple of years' worth of rumors and moves by Harley. Still sad to see it go.
I owned that exact 883 1986 you showed. 9 HDs later and almost 40 years...I just sold my 2017 Ultra Limited and bought a 2008 Sportster 1200 Anniversary edition. Nothing makes my heart pound like a simple sportster. I'll ride mine on out, lol l.
I like the 48 ,looks like a custom, id build. Cheers from Australia
Cheers! It might be their best looking bike... or was.
Blind fold line was hilarious… well done sir 😂
Thanks!
So man, I hope that you're going to keep yours, you never know, on day(maybe not so long from now) it'll be worth more than what you've paid for it even in Canadian!
The Sportster has been outdated for so long that I'm amazed that it took this long to die. It was fun in it's day (40-50 years ago) but I'm glad that it's gone..... and I LIKE old style bikes!
My first sportster was a 2008 XL 883, my second was a 2018 Iron 1200 and my third will be the new Nightster 965. They will arrive in Brazil next year. (but first I'm gonna have to raffle my house , for sure).
Yes. Nice bike but more expensive than any of the Indian Scouts.
It's only a matter of time before the same thing happens to the other air cooled twins in the HD catalog , it's evolve or die time for HD .
And on a larger scale for the whole industry as electrics are coming in.
@@DifferentSpokesTV but HD spun off the electrics , it's ICE only at HD
@@DifferentSpokesTV I have a dream that hydrogen will get a shot, needs infrastructure though
Cheers from the Pacific West Coast of Canada.
Love my new Nightster!
Well said!
Thanks!
Nicely said....
Thank you!
I think I'm going to call my local Harley dealer and go buy a 48. I've always liked them and if I don't make a move soon I'll never have a "new" one. I know the new Sportster is faster and more modern but I just don't care. They are still slow compared to other bikes and I just want to cruise and rumble sometimes. RIP to the 883!! Sad day...
Well. I called. No deals at Harley Davidson of Louisville. Out the door quoted price with tax, title & license was $13,983.63. I'm going to have to think about that a little bit. They are sitting on a LOT of them.
Ye3p. Good luck getting one now for anywhere near MSRP. They know the cat is out of the bag and they know prices just jumped by 10% at least.
I had my 883 for 5 years, I wanted to hit 50k miles on that bike. That wish came true because on my road trip through Colorado from Texas my engine just gave up. She got 50004 miles. R.I.P
Easiest bike to work on , Evo 97 Sportster , hell of a bike . Best Harley so far
Since you've put it that way,,,,,, Mary-Ann, or Ginger......... "BOTH", first I'll have Ginger, and then Mary-Ann! One for excitement , one for comfort!
Or both at once :)
@@DifferentSpokesTV No, that's a little too much, at one time!
Got an older 883 Sportster for this season after not riding for 25 years. It's been a blast out here in the Maritimes. But I can't help to think now that I want something a bit more now that I have my sea legs back. There are too many bikes to choose from these days. I also worry that I will miss the character of the rumbly Harley. It's like playing a Telecaster-you gotta fight it a little. Plus you can work on it yourself. So I dunno. Maybe I'll sell it. Maybe I'll keep it. I've watched a lot of your videos and would love a T7. But at 5'7" I am not sure that I would enjoy it as much as someone taller.
Thanks for the comment. Check out my T7 playlist. In the video where I announce that I bought one I show us trying out different ones at the bike show. There are a couple of factory lowered ones that you cam see Brooke almost flat footing. You can get the dealer to install the link and lower seat and should be good to go. Or you could customize your Sporty and it'll feel like a new bike :)
I started riding on an iron head (still own it 23 years later) so it's a little hard to see the end of the air cooled Sportsters, but it's time to modernize. I'm not a fan of the Sportster S's weird styling but I do like the look of the new Nightster. Too bad they didn't go for a 45 degree water cooled engine. All the potato without the heat and emissions.
Good point. I wonder why choose 60 degrees? Probably vibration.
Hey let's be thankful they didn't drop the EVO years ago as they probably should have. I'm looking at mine right now with a smile.
Ironically, when the EVO first came in it got some push back from the shovel die-hards.
I always wanted an 883.
The gubmint been smoggin' 'em since 1985. Now it is to the point that the gubmit smogged them clear out of existence. meh, I wouldn't buy one, anyway. For the rest of my life, I think any motorcycle I'll buy will be made before 2010 or so.
I just bought the 48 that is used in the thumbnail. The red one. It's 2016 used with 500 miles 😁😁
Awesome, congrats! Your bike probably just gained 10% in value.
I don't like the look or sound of any Harleys but your blindfold joke made me laugh out loud!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Really hoping they have a big set of bikes to release for their 120th anniversary.
They could have done so much more with the Sportsters over their life, the EVO would have benefited from an improved chassis a decade ago
Buell did some cool stuff with the engine although really he should have been working with the V-Rod engine.
48 definitely!
Such a great bike that was always ignored they never even tried or made any effort to make this machine better sad it was their best motor
I'm glad the aftermarket is still building them.
Who the hell is in charge at that company. It’s like a rudderless ship. It reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons. Homer meets a long lost relative who owns an automobile manufacturing company. Much to the chagrin of his company staff, he allows Homer to design a new vehicle that will take them into the future. Of course Homer designs something so ridiculously off the mark it sends the company into bankruptcy. Life imitating art?
Ride a Dyna LowRider myself. Never liked the look of the Iron 883 - too chunky.
The evo sportster of HD will be missed. Great sound and feel! But innovation is good! Look at the Indian Scout! When it hit the market again it Dior wasn't an air cooled engine. They gave that bad boy a makeover that to this day is very expressive! It was only a matter of time that the sportster would do the same. Hast luego!
Couldn't agree more! Progress waits for not even Harley.
Harley Davidson can make a great sportster it's called the XR-1200 but instead of promoting it like they should have, they let it fail.
Reliable revmax will have to be seen. Look at all the guys with the twin cams who got screwed over by Harley because the idiots could not design a proper tensioner and could not care enough to change the design when the problems started to become apparent and left it up to the owners. Then the M8 comes out with ANOTHER oil problem wrecking engines. How hard is it to design an antique old school motor that does not fail? Maybe because the revmax is a total redesign higher tech ground up motor (no doubt with outside modern engineers designing it) it will be a great engine. All I know is my 96 sporty sounds nothing like the newer sporties like yours (I have a video on my channel of it and start it up at the end). Carbed and rigid mounted and it thumps hard and vibrates like no tomorrow with its stage 4 engine. Once the twin cam came out with FI the Harley sound was gone. In fact I looked online (FB Marketplace) at a 2006 Yamaha Roadstar 1700 (still carbed) and then on youtube and it sounds better than any non carbed harley other than the evo or shovel. Blew me away. czcams.com/video/r4jm8Ah6EIQ/video.html
Yeah, a stage 4 will definitely make the engine sound more aggressive.
They are old. It would happen sooner or later. Time to improve the geriatric engines and bikes, compete with others and sell bikes to the younger crowd.
Going to need to adjust the price tag too if they want to sell to a younger crowd.
@@LieutenantLysol
Very very true. I'm NOT a Harley fan. I don't like how they sound, run, culture, performance, in fact there's only ONE thing that I like about Harley. The fit and finish and general quality is excellent. Therefore, If they were to drop prices, their paint quality, fit and finish, polished and high quality chrome components will have to go or match Japanese, Chinese or India manufacturers. You simply can't have a $2k paint job on a $8k motorcycle. Therefore, quality greatly affects pricing. Or....they can do it on their inexpensive models aimed towards the younger and less wealthy buyers. It is a double edge sword. A move like this could bring people in and spook others out. Every brand has characteristics that buyers look for. Once those are gone or changed, the consumer reaction can be unpredictable. Some brands test the waters by offering some bikes of "less quality" at cost just to gage the public's reaction.
The CEO was hinting that some 750s will make it into the line-up at some point. I hope it's true.
3 weeks before the official announcement I received an inside tip from a salesman and purchased a one owner low mile (3,875) 2012 Sportster 72 for $6,700. It's in the corral with my 1996 Dyna Low Rider Convertible (all original) EVO and a 2007 Ultra Classic Olive pearl with black panels outlined in red pin stripe.

Nice collection!
@@DifferentSpokesTV Thank you.
Harley is gonna stop trying to sell antiques for 15,000 dollars? that's crazy, why wouldn't someone want that?
As an older rider I will not even go near those new Harleys. Only reason I would ever consider a bike from that brand is the nostalgia factor. And no, those are not for me. I like japanese bikes and since 1974 (the year I got my license) I have only owned japanese bikes. Several Hondas, even more Kawasakis and one Yamaha. Never had a Suzuki, I have nothing against them but so far one to buy has not crossed paths with me. I could maybe have a Triumph, or perhaps one of the new Enfields. But not a Harley. I ride with a bunch of Harley guys so I get some ribbing about my choice (Vulcan for now) but that I can take. And I don´t experience technical problems, ever. Which I´m quick to point out every time one of my friends have problems with their Harleys. And that happens often. 😉
Yes, one has to wonder what the premium is for now that Harleys are starting to feel indistinguishable from metric bikes.
I bought a new Nightster 975. Looks like an iron 883, but rides like a naked bike.
Full comfort of assist slipper clutch and TBW and sheltered air cleaner (no need rain cover)
Can catch up with any Softail no problem
Yep. The guys on the big bikes can't be mocking Sportsters any more cause they'll be afraid they'll get smoked by one.
The 48!
I'll take the 48
😞
48 sportster excellent bike
48 Mary Ann have a 90 sporty 883 screaming eagle cams and a heritage love them both 🤙🇺🇸
Dumping the air cooled, push rod engine?
It's about time HD. Welcome to the future, or at least the late nineties.
I don't like the new bikes. They should keep it old school like Royal Enfield is doing.
I'm glad they're finally moving forward but I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't kind of sad. I've never ridden an Evo sportster, only my old 82 Ironhead sporty, but while objectively speaking it was a terrible motorcycle, I loved it dearly. It was terrible in sort of a good way.
That sums up the EVO Sportster too.
1:20 .. prehistoric. It’s correct word
883/48 no doubt
You could always get a Shineray V1200.
Just looked it up. If the build quality is good they could have something there.
Can I choose neither?
I chose the T7 :)
@@DifferentSpokesTV in the video you asked is to choose between the 2 HD models. 😉
The nightster price is just pathetic. 48 looks better and sounds better. Nightster performs better. I appreciate both, not the price though.
Agreed.
The big twin evo is not the same engine as the sportster Evo
HD is not likely to produce a true entry level bike. It’s just not in the cards for them. Young folks will have to start out on used Sportsters or imports, then drop the dough on a HD
Yep, that's definitely a possibility given HD's insistence on being a premium brand.
I like the power and technology on the newer Sportsters.
I have a 1999 / 883, mid controls, solo seat, great bike, solid mount engine, don't really notice any vibration, the new Sportster is ugly, big radiator, motor looks like it's made out of plastic.
Love your channel. 😘 But being a bit older and tracing my start in motorcycling to the '60s when Harleys were heavy, archaic, over-priced dogs, I've never shared your admiration of the Sportster...or any HD for that mater. Ironically, your tribute to the Sportster acurately hit all the reasons I'm a Harley hater.😎
Yep, the EVO Sportster sucked in every regard except for being a Harley. It was better at that than anything else in the line-up.
Harley's future bikes will consist a noise emitter of the potato sound, where Harley will finally be able to patent their sound.
Nice :)
The harley davidson 48 . I don't like the nightster
48
I can't imagine Harley not having a Sportster. Sleek and cool bike. Maybe they have a replacement in mind. They could use a good smaller "first" bike. Put the street 500 in a sportster frame.
I say Bronx...
Go forty eight
New Harleys Sportsters are the creepiest, ugliest, most disgusting sh*t I've ever seen.
48.
Meanwhile Enfield is selling 350's and KTM is selling 390's
And the Dakar rally bikes are 450’s?.
😔 Harley Davidson should not do this, how will the potato sound be heard in the ears of the people in the future, which people are crazy about, sportspersons also have their own fun, can't believe this bike is being discontinued. mood off
V-twin is dying. Before Harley, Suzuki ditched theirs.
I think it will become a niche engine for bikes less concerned about performance.
@@DifferentSpokesTV Honestly, I'm expecting only Italian meme mobiles would be left in the next five years.
Suzuki V-Strom is still selling well.
It is just one more marketing scam. It will be back in a few years.
So basically they have killed their best bikes. Mental. Harley is loosing it.
I love my evo sportster I would trade in two seconds for the revolution max sportster if could afford to.
If the Forty Eight and the Nightster were to cost the same, then I would take the Nightster.
Worst thing Harley’s ever film done😡😡😡
The new sportster bikes are ugly as hell
I'm just here to read the illiterate Harley haters comments.
Another heavy, hilariously underpowered and overpriced murican cruiser down the drain... What a tragic loss.
well riding is emotional experience I prefer feeling it like its a living machine like Moto Guzzies HD's older versions. Had VFR7800 CB750 Yamaha XJ1100 SV650 so yes had powerful bikes but something was missing...that elemetal joy of riding! Welcome to Sporster!
harley davidson cannot be this stupid so.....it must be a tactical retrieve which means there will soon be a better and brand new sportster!!!
They had to do it because they couldn't meet emissions. The new ones are already there but they sound and feel like metric bikes.
