I am 5’ female rider bought the 48 for my first bike . It is great with forward controls it feels like riding a big bike and I changed handlebars to 10’ bars so i don’t lean forward…that was a game changer for me . Able to sit comfortably in my seat and the 1200 keeps up with the bigger bike on long rides . Peanut tank is 2.1 gallon you get s out 85 miles per tank .. absolutely love my bike 😎✌️
I got one as my first bike but I'm 5'9" so I feel like I lean forward WAY too far to be comfortable. I was looking at the 5inch zbars viking bags has, do you think the 5 inch would be enough? Ik not huge on bigger apes for myself lol
If you don't mind me asking how much do you weight and your height, I'm only asking because my best friend wants to sell me his and he's a little taller than me and weights more than me and honestly if a female can handle this i know i can lmaoo
6’3 200 pounds and THE 48 IS MY FAVORITE BIKE to ride!!!!
I put about 10,000 miles on this same bike over 5 years, it is a fantastic machine with a few drawbacks. 1. still lots of vibration, hands and butt go numb after about 40 minutes. 2. not a lot of range on the peanut tank, about 70 to 80 miles, never got 100 miles out of a tank 3. yes plenty of power for the highway BUT no 6th gear so very buzzy at 70 mph. 4. wide front tire makes it a pig in the curves. 5. 1.5 inches of rear suspension travel, you feel every bump. Overall a fantastic bike for around town, short rides not comfortable on long rides, but alot of fun, looks great!
Your right about the gas tank range, I get about 35 miles per gallon, much less than the mileage that has been advertised, no big deal to me, though. The Sportster 48 is not set up to be a long distance comfort bike, it is a fun, agile "bobber."
The vibration is really an issue, I don´t know if theres is a solution for that. I guess the engine rumbles a lot on certain RPM that is hard to control the vibration.
Modern simplicity at its finest... I own a Forty-Eight.. This machine is a breath of fresh air in such a modern do everything for me world... It's definitely raw but refined
modern price tag too. harley just isn't what it used to be
@@leeonardodienfield402 Indian is even more expensive.. BMW ..well.. even more expensive..

@@brianh2421 you're much happier than...me? lol
I love my 48. I’m 5’ 11” 280 lbs(a big boy) and I’m comfortable. The bike has plenty of power. I rip around the city streets on mine and on the highway it’s Okay. The wind is an issue on the highway, it will blow you around, but also moves along great, I’m usually doing 80+ easily. Fuel range is a thing with the peanut tank. But again, it’s meant to be a quick bar hopping machine or tearing around town. It’s great for off highway day trips. Just plan on topping off the tank after about 80 miles. This bike is FUN. Which is why I bought it.
Liking the straightforward review that is reide and performance centered. You are right about the customization. Anything and everything is possible whether it makes sense or not.
I am loving your no BS reviews. Everything we need to know about the bikes without reading the spec sheet. ✌️
Really enjoying these bike reviews and seeing you ride new bikes. Keep up the great work
I got a 17' 48. I got it basically as my first bike after 12 years of not riding. Absoutely great bike!
Love my 2019 48 Special here in the UK that came with ABS as standard (to meet with Euro regs) and mini apes which I've changed to drag bars.
The one thing that Harley did is make the these sportsters a true classic by stop making them.
They stop making them because since 2015 Indian Scout out did them so they created a water cooled Sportster S not to lose the beginning market share that shape who buys the bigger bike.
@@HangTimeSolutions that Sportster S is $20k otd. Good luck to beginners lol
@@mariuss.6607 I feel you I got a 2018 Scout as my first bike with accessories OTD under $10K. Much smoother ride then both vibrator sporty.
They stopped making the 48? I wanted one.
@@MrCarguy427 Yes. They completely stopped making all of the Evo. engine sportsters.
Loving these reviews, straight and to the point
I did my license on a 48, super cool that you review it now :D
The mirrors are adjustable as to where you can just glance at them without moving your head, but you might need to rotate the stems slightly to dial them in.
Thanks for the reviews! Keep doing them.
I love the style of the Forty Eight and planning on owning one for a cool runaround bike. I want to challenge you to review a Tri Glide? I know that is only a limited audience but , your experience and knowledge would make a great information video.
yeah it's like my bike, and thanks for the review on forward controls. This is why i opted out. I like the dirtbike feel of mid-controls
Love these reviews…for someone like me looking for another Bike…these show me what other options are out there…thanks…
Gregg, loving the reviews. Keep them coming. ATVB
I’m 5’8 172cm… absolutely no issues with the forward controls riding this bike. Still very comfortable. I hear it a lot from people who are taller like yourself 5’9 complain about the forward controls and riding position. Personal preference I guess.
I agree, I'm 5'8'' also with a 30'' inseam and I feel totally comfortable on my Sportster 48. I had a Triumph Bonneville for nine years and the last year I had it I had severe pain in my hips because of the position of the controls. The 48 is the first bike I had ridden with forward controls and I adapted right away, no adjustment period, easy bike to ride.
yeah I want to possibly get one for my first bike but I'm 6'4 so If I do I will have to put some mini ape hangers on it to make it any bit comfortable
@@malloy8824 I recommend going to a dealership and trying it out first. Might be abit small for you. But the apes could work
Too small of a bike for your height! I would just go straight to a street/road glide if I was your height
This would be the HD I would get. The simplicity is great.
the mirrors can be adjusted, I had the same issue when I got the bike but just a little adjustment and they are perfect now, I can see everything behind me with no problem at all, and the torque of the bike is amazing, definitely a huge difference with the 883
I appreciate your review on this bike because this is one of the bikes between this and the Indian scout Bobber I'm looking to get. Hopefully I get to see you do a review on the Indian Scott bobber as well. Love your videos
New Motorcycle review every day - it feels like Christmas to me.
I'm 6'4" and I love the bike and the forward controls. I recommend the forty eight for the taller rider
Does it vibrate that bad that you’ll be numb in 40 mins?
I think the 883 is the bike for me. I remember in your review of the 883 you said you could ride it all day long, seating position was comfortable and shocks did a good job over the bumps. Also, I like that post apocalyptic look which makes it a perfect choice to run away from Zombies!
883 has lower gearing to make it seem powerful, but it cruises at like 3500rpm when your up to freeway speeds and she gets VERY hot in the summer
@@sharkystunts8110 Thanks! I live in South Florida and knowing the bike gets very hot in the Summers, is something I need to carefully consider.
@@erolyalim2911 by all means; it's not fatal for the 883. Just get an oil temp sensing oil cap (as with any bike that doesn't have one) and a oil cooler; Very inexpensive for both. On my 1200 I just coast at 55 when it's over 100. and she holds temp around 230°f and I haven't installed a oil cooler yet
@@sharkystunts8110 Thanks, again! Very good advice!
dont decide on the engine size its a thing of the models like classic, iron, 48. If you install the tallboy Handlebar or change the Position to the back its comfortable for me with 6ft2 only the seat it bad for me after 100miles
Unfortunately this beaut can no longer be sold in Europe. The Euro 5 emissions standard nonsense. It's a real shame, this small bike is one of my favourites.
Great review, cheers mate.
Ferrari, lamborghini, porsche, BMW, audi etc etc can all produce big engine high powered gas guzzling cars still, but decent fun comparatively small engined economical bikes are now a No No thanks to the EU. One of the worst things to ever happen to Europe, is the EU.
Lovely bike! I cut the rear fender and frame; turned mine into a bobber
Very interesting review, thanks. I have noticed the same lack of wind with my 2005 Low Rider with forward controls. I actually like highway riding better without the snap on wind shield that came with it! I really appreciate all your content. Thanks
A low fibre diet helps with the lack of wind..
@@marksmallman4572 good one
Great review , looks and sounds like a fantastic bike … I mite grab one of the last 48’s
I love my 48 I have a 2016 model, this is 1 harley I will keep forever
For me this is the most beautiful bike from HD..hope HD will make new 48 with this classic design but modern like milwaukee 8, LED lights, 6 speed gearbox & bigger peanut tank
I think comfort has a lot to do with body size and height. I'm 6'2" and find the forward controls and stock bars very comfortable. Sat on several Harleys with mid controls and my legs were very cramped.
I’m 5’8” and I feel cramped with mid controls. The forward controls on the 48 are barely forward
@@jeffcagle7021 agreed. My 1200 Custom is the same way. I could stand them a little further forward.
How about a review on the fat bob? Thanks for the reviews!!
Nice video how do you swerve back an forth so smooth
I like your bike reviews, have you ridden any gen 3 / FST platform Zero Motorcycles yet? I own a Zero SR/S and love it (The fully faired sport touring). I'd love to hear your thoughts on the SR/S, the SR/F or the DSR/X. :-)
I own a 2022 Harley 48 sportster. You can adjust the mirrors.
I am also contemplating on upgrading to either a fat boy or a fat Bob I would be curious to hear your reviews on both in which bike you would select. Thank you so much.
The low fuel light on the 2022 48 comes on between 60 and 68 miles depending upon how much I fill up the tank and I have only gone 77 miles before stopping and filling up and it took 1.9 gallons at 77 miles. I don’t know truly how many miles I could truly ride from completely full until completely empty
I'm 5' 9 too. I don't like my feet equal to my hands. I'd rather they were slightly offset so I'm more prone so my back wouldn't take the brunt of bumps and the forward leaning as I'm relaxed. I like the openness of it, but the tank just doesn't match the bike in my opinion.
I have a 2020 forty eight ‘ the only thing anybody would definitely needs to change is the seat and shock adjust right to 4 or 5th point ‘ i baught a cc rider solo seat thats so comfortable i can do long rides now without tiring the cusion on seat keeps you hold tight otherwise i always slip backword on the stock seat . i have now zero reason to change my bike ‘ since i changed the seat and did tons of mods .. its an everyday bike 🏍️♥️ love my forty eight
I own a Forty Eight- there is plenty of wind resistance. Reason you are not feeling the wind is because you were only going about 60 mph on a fair weather day
You're not feeling a lot of wind on the highway until you hit about 80mph, that's when the wind starts pushing you around. Love this bike though, perfect for small trips and ripping around town!
I have a 2022 Harley 48 and you can also mount the mirrors on the top of the bars. The only thing I don’t like in both positions is that I can’t see very well/at all what’s coming up behind me! Does anyone know of any aftermarket mirrors where you can actually see what’s coming up behind you and not just what’s to your immediate left and/or right side?
great video thank you😝
san diego is awesome. i miss it.
bike is badass
lower mirrors and similar might look good, but I cannot stand having mirrors not up nearer my line of sight.
Excellent review. I could not justify the expense for a bike that can only go 100 miles without a fill up and needs additional equipment to meet basic needs such as handlebars and mirrors.
100 miles? Ha.
I have a Stage 1 48 and I'm lucky to make it 70. This isn't a bike you buy for any practical reason, you buy it to blast around town and look awesome doing so. The riding position isn't optimal, the rear suspension has no travel, the seat is thin, the mirrors are basically for show, and the tank is tiny. It's a toy.
@@stevem4783 😕, rly want a 48... if I got an iron 1200, I'd just end up wasting money making it look like a 48... (Lil different, but 48s are a great base for the type of bike I'd want) how bad is the suspension and how different is the seating position compared to a standard sportster?
@@RandyNachoManSandwich Honestly the Iron 1200 is a more comfortable bike because of the seat, bars, and riding position...the mid controls and higher bars mean you sit in a neutral position instead of hunched over with your legs extended like you do on the 48. It also has a thinner front tire so it's a little easier to steer around, and about a good 40-ish more miles of range because of the bigger tank.
I wouldn't recommend getting one of them and turning it into a 48, that's a lot of work and money in mods when it'd be easier to just find a 48 outright.
100 miles is an exaggeration! I own one and it more like 60-65 miles before filling up
I really like the lower mirrors...
I had the 48 for a year. The forward controls have you folded in half like a taco. Hit a bump on the highway at 80mph and with that short throw rear suspension you will be launched if you aren't careful. It is a great looking ride though.
Folded in half like a taco, that cracked me up
I am pretty sure mirrors are on top when sold due to dot regs with the mandatory warnings labels, etc. if I flip mine the type is upside down. It’s up to your druthers…I’d druther have it on top, but to each their own.
Would be awesome to see you make a video of the new indian chief darkhorse
Got a 48 recently…I’ve been riding big Japanese sport bikes my whole life,.. still do… this is my first Harley. I was not comfortable with forward controls … I replaced those with mids … I can grind, stand, sit up straight. The gas tank doesn’t hold enough gas to make long runs so why lay back.. whatever, it’s a much heavier bike than I’m used to but the up front power gives it some respect. I didn’t need this bike but I never had one and only rode an old school knuckler back when I was 18 or so. I figured what the hell? All my friends have a Harley in their garage that they don’t ride much so I added it to the stable. I don’t hate anything or anyone as long as nobody’s getting hurt . I do hate evil.
The mid controls help with maneuvering this heavy frame, I’m getting used to it ,… shit, I might buy another perhaps a bigger one… I’m 64 years old so I probably won’t be stunting. I’m also building a stretched and raked rigid Honda in the style of a frisco triumph. We’ll see what happens.
That’s my amateur review.
Great fun bike I just do not feel good riding the 48 on the freeway
Thanks for your thoughtful and insightful review!!
The 48 was and remains my dream bike. I bought one new in 2019. After upgrades to Stage 3, it runs like the wind!
thanks! :)

@@MotoJitsu Thank you!
@@MotoJitsu Did you say the 22, 48 had inverted forks?? Just curious!
I wish Harley used bikes with forward controls at their riding schools. Would make using em so much easier
I feel so weird that theres no cut before the music stars playing lmao, pls dont change it, dont be like others 😅
i wonder why my 2019 48 is keyless but that isnt (i got a EU Bike). The Mirrors doesnt go that wide up. A little trick is lowering the controls a little bit then its good for me with the tallboy handlebar.
The fob is an option. I have a 2016 and mine's keyless.
At 5 9 in height I didn't like the stock bars forward controls, stock tires or 11 inch shocks at all. Changed to drag bars, mid controls, Avon cobra venom tires burly brand 13.5 inch progressive rear shocks and done the stage 1 upgrade and a 14 litre fuel tank the Aussie model comes stock with ABS I've put 22,000 miles on it since new in 2016 the bike has never let me down and the only time its had a wrench to it is for the mods the bike is bullet proof I love it. The 48 will be the last bike I'll ever own.
many options for it
I have always loved Sportsters, unfortunately at 6'2" 220lbs I don't fit on them all that well. They are just classic looking bikes to me, if you ask a 4 year old to draw what he thinks a motorcycle looks like, a Sportster is basically what you get.
Heritage classics should be next Harley Davidson you should review
5 foot 10 48 owner, number 1 I got rid of those ridiculous forward controls and changed to mids (best bang for buck mod I've done so far), fitted drag bars, 13.5 inch progressive rear shocks , avon venom tyres ( the stock commanders are absolute rubbish by comparison I wouldn't have them on the bike again if they gave them to me free) added a stage 1 kit. It gets along at a fair clip and handles heaps better. I've owned lots of bikes the 48 is the last bike I'll ever own.
Did you have to raise the forks with the 13.5 rear shock ? Mods sounds like things I would want , is there a stretch foward with new bars ?
@@luvsallbikes279 Shocks are Burly Brand 13'5 progressive they're for the Dyna but they will fit the 48 sporty ( & huge improvement over the stock) you just need two flat washers either side to pack them out at the swing arm. I didn't have to raise the forks there's no stretch as I've 2 inch risers. I didn't to mention I needed a 9 inch kickstand due to the 13.5 shocks the 8 inch stand works but it's just a bit dodgy ( & adjust the drive belt to suit) the seat height is approximately 30mm higher the bonus is it never bottoms out anymore and the stance is similar to that of the Roadster & I've the Roadster seat. I can't overstate enough how sh~t the stock MICHELIN Commander's were & how good the AVON venoms are. In summary, Number 1 ) Mid controls, 13.5 progressive shocks & AVON venoms drag bars 2 inch risers. Number 2) 9 inch kickstand. Number 3 Stage 1 upgrade in my opinion there's no point improving hp & torque if you're bike handles like a bag of sh~t. Good luck let me know you get on.
Love my 13 48
The only Harley I’d consider buying.
1:02 Is the Sportster Iron 883 the same as the Iron 883? Here in Canada it's just the Iron 883 cruiser without the sportster moniker.
Yes
Rob has the best job in the world
At 5 7 I thought the 48 would be for me but your description of the seating position makes me wonder if it is.
Forward controls are a deal breaker!
When I bought mine at the dealership about half of the 48’s had mid controls and the other half had forward controls. I had wanted a grayish/silverish color one and didn’t get it because all of those were mid controls. The forward controls on the 48 are very slightly forward to where it feels almost like a mid control bike rather than a forward controls bike
@@jeffcagle7021 cheers thanks mate🍻
30” inseam, you’ll feel a bit stretched initially due to the novelty of forward controls, but it ultimately becomes comfortable. I never get bored of mine, took it for a 150 mile spin the other day.
Roll the bars a little forward and lower the seat ❤
I put the mirrors on top. It catches your arms a bit but it’s easier for me.
Same here, but I still can’t see anything directly behind me
@@jeffcagle7021 about all it does is makes them a little easier to see with a full face helmet. Right mirror catches part of the rear behind the bike and left is only good for right next to you, and I have to drop elbows and maximize looking over my shoulder. I’ve used their mirror extensions-a shaft that raises them-but it was no help. Stay safe sir.
May as well buy a Rebel 500.
I had a 2010 with 5000 miles and lots of minimalist x-tras that were nice , only $5900. I was too old to ride anymore so I sold it. RATS!!!

Not in the least. The Low Rider S has some torque but it's a pig, it has trouble outrunning a 48 from a dig, it gets dusted by the Nightster, and absolutely dumped on by the Sportster S. It couldn't run with the old Night Rods and Muscles, too.
