The search for a GREAT RAT is Over! JHS Packrat

- I know, this pedal has been out for a good while. Still, I wanted to give it a spin in order to determine which Rat model (if any) I liked to play. I have quite a few Rat inspired pedals and most are OK but nothing that impresses me so far. Instead of giving up all together on this type of circuit, I reached out to the folks at JHS and asked if they could send their Packrat my way.
They kindly obliged and sent this out a while back. I have to admit, this is way better sounding then I thought it would be. You would think that with this many models inside a regular pedal enclosure, that some compromises had to be made, right? That is where we'd be wrong.
The Packrat boasts 9 different take on the ProCo Rat:
- The OG (1979) models the Big Box Rat
- White Face (1984) models the Small Box Rat
- Turbo (1989) models the Turbo Rat
- Brat (1997) models the 90's Proco Brat
- Dirty (2004) models the You Dirty Rat
- LA (1986) models the Ibanez LA Metal
- Landgraff MO'd (2005) models the John Landgraff modification
- Caroline Wave Cannon (2010) Philippe Herndon's mod
- JHS Mode is their popular JHS mod to the Rat

Great demo, great riffs
Great pedal
Thanks! I think I may have found the one Rat pedal that I'll keep, and sell the others.
thanks for the video was never a fan of the rat but now i see where it should be used
I'm glad that the video was helpful. Give a Rat another try, you may be surprised.
holy crap another great demo. But I gotta cool it. Allllmost bought it but realized I already bought a few Joyo pedals because of your videos and now I never use em haha. I guess you know how to get optimal sounds from your gear much more than I do
That experience comes with time, and many errors along the way. Sometimes I sound like total garbage, but sometimes I nail a tone that I like. This one is easy to dial in. :)
Nice playing!
Thanks a lot!
Cool. I noticed the distortion pedal was mostly around noon. I guess the amp was on a clean-ish dial. The OG was superb.
I could have cranked the gain, but was getting some killer tones at lower settings, so I ran with it.
Love the Jimmy Eat World riffs!
They have very cool guitar riffs. I love that band.
I always enjoy hearing you play that Gretsch! Does this pedal do the Triangle RAT and the Rams Head RAT? ;-)
I did not know those existed. To your question, it does not.
@@TheToneLounge just a joke/reference to the JHS Muff-aletta which has ALL the MUFFS!
@@glendoggett9670 oh I know lol Just thought I would keep the joke going ;)
Question.
I find these types of JHS pedal to be plagued with a lot of background noise/buzz issues. I haven't tried the RAT but did have both the Muff and TS models. Sold them both because of that very same issue. Did you experience this with this version?
I don't find this one any noisier than the original pedal. As for the Muff, they are noisy to begin with.
@@TheToneLounge Yeah. It's really hard to put my finger on it. Having had single mode Muff or TS pedals. The background noise in the JHS's didn't feel normal in comparison. I appreciate the response! Great Video!
Close enough for rock and roll!
100% agreed
what's the riff at 0:55 ? I know it's a classic
Funk 49
@@TheToneLounge thanks!
@@TheToneLounge Honestly I prefer your take on the riff
Guitar center has been pushing this goofy pedal here.
What is goofy about it?
Does this pedal 'Work'? Yes, it does.
I’m trying not to make negative posts……. so no comment (….except for: get a decent Plexi Marshall and forget pedals.) Ps the playing was good!
Lol and yet
There is always a compromise. Some amos do clean well, others do gain well. Having an amp that does both very well is rare. Some choose clean amps and select choice pedals for gain.
Yeah and lose your hearing in the process.
@@theyreMineralsMarie Yeah, there is that 🤣
Great playing but the pedal sounds so brittle, terrible!
Rat style pedals have that sonic print to them. I actually found this pedals to be the smoothest example of a Rat that I've tried so far.
I guess I’m measuring it to my old rat pedal which has a creamy smooth tone. Anyway, great video. Cheers..
