I used to have one of these 1974 VDP V12’s in the 80’s (the first of 4 Jag V12’s I’ve had). Drank fuel like hell but was such a nice riding car. Only needed a water pump up until the final death when it went low comp on one cylinder. Almost gave it away to someone who was going to drop a Chev in it. Sadly at the time i didn’t have the capability I have now to put it right myself. But certainly one of a rare production run. Mine was same colour too. ❤

My Uncle was a huge Daimler fan before he passed away. My childhood memories are of trips around Devon and Yorkshire in his double six during the late 70s. I think he is the reason I got into classic cars and restoration? I missed out on buying his last double six and sp250 as my Aunt sold them to a man at the door even though I said I wanted to buy them, she died a year later so probably wasn't thinking straight? All his cars were very low mileage but that and UK weather meant there was always something wrong with them, he loved driving them but wasn't a DIYer. Aussie climate is a lot kinder to these old motors, holy grail to find anything here without some rust? Unseen project arrives in 2 hours, fingers crossed it isn't a total lemon?

Nice car,caramel gold my dad had a identical one but with the 4.2 engine and lighter colour interior,even rarer than the v12 i think.lovely car,so glad you pronounced vanden plas correctly to.nothing more annoying when people say vanden pla.

Wow! that is a great car, I am looking forward to watching your videos as you bring it back to life, I own a couple over here in NZ (along with a lot of other S2 XJ variants), one of mine is metallic blue with an almost white leather interior, the other is in Gold, both are Vanden Plas Double six. I am converting one to fuel injection next year when get time.

Don't think I've ever seen you as excited about a new acquisition. and rightly so. What a beauty - and it's basically sound as a pound. Incredible, given the age of the car. Will be very interested to see how this project goes. Don't forget to tell us the estimated true mileage once you've worked it out. I'd reckon 103,000.

Excellent find Brett. Its a real VDP, front air intake is body colour, but technically the boot hinges need to be black beneath the boot seal while it open.

What an absolutely stunning VDP! I don't know about down under, but here in the UK, we can get re-connolising kits that are made to the exact colour. Look up the furniture repair clinic on here, they've a few vids on the process. I redid my XJR-6's interior and it came up like new. Loving the channel, such a great find. Mac in England :)

Hi There, I briefly owned A Daimler Vanden Plas 4.2 back In 1994.
Back then I worked had as a mini cab driver in Coventry to by my beauty.
The car broke down basically gearbox I never actually had chance to fuel the old car the seller said I could drive Blackpool and back no problem..
I fell ill with burst appendix and I begged my mum to get the car into my dads garage she agreed but only a temporary measure..
I really thought I would be fine and be able to save money to fix it up at some point..
This car was Black with grey vinyl roof and steel sunroof I think it had with beautiful grey leather loads of chrome a 1977 car.
One day my Mum said I can't get my Flymo Lawn mower out and that big car needed to go.
My Mum knew how much I loved cars but somehow she had a great way to make me get rid of these cars.
Past cars were Dolomite 18/50 1976 mimosa yellow and my spitfire 1500 cc convertible 1977 car in vermillion red
The Daimler I paid just £420 She made my scrap my back beauty and I got just... £80 I know it broke my heart.. The lawn mower was only worth £40 Quid..
Seen these cars in UK and in today money they range around £10k to £18k..
My Godfather had a MK2 Jaguar 1968 Old English White Loved his car growing up and his Brother had many Jaguars and Daimlers so I always wanted one.
So far including the mentioned one I've had 4 1988 Daimler 3.6 Burgundy XJ40 and one XJ6 3.2 1991 Sovereign and my last one was a 2000 XJ8 3.2 In blue.
Have driven a few others 1979 and 1986 in garage I worked..

Wow nice find, Love the V12 VDP's I reckon you'd have to pay £ 8 - 12 k GBP for that in the uk in its current condition. In the UK a similar car would require a shed load of welding of course. Think you got a very nice car thats got bags of potential.

Brett, dont knock the Strombergs, they are probably a better option than the early fuel injection system. There has been a few articles on getting the Strombergs running well, and a bloke called Paul from the UK has a few hints on how to get them running really well. My Series 1 VDP Double Six runs like a champion, so persevere my friend. Great car!

Good afternoon Brett, working on the UK link for you, get back soonest. Also 'Living with a Classic ' has quite a good video on tuning/balancing a Series 2carb V12, definitely worth a watch. You'll need to invest in a venturi gauge to get the balance and mixture correct, once I'm in my workshop I'll send details of both.
Looks a good solid original car and must have cost a bucketload in the day.
Twice as much as a standard series 2 in 1974. 8000 pounds I believe back then
I am in the middle of digging out a 1974 Jag XJ12L that is a 1 owner barn find. I cant remember the last time it ran. The body and seats and interior are way way better than that Daimler. Original 54K on the clock. Dad hardly ever drove it. At the moment I have no idea if it will turn over. I will check back here if you want to comment. Any advice?

I have one of these (1974 on carbs). Got it for £250 many years ago but being in the UK it was very rusty. Also hade the misfortune of the engine seizing in storage and 5 of the head-studs snapping in the block. All that is now sorted thankfully. Mine is Caramel with Tuscan interior. I don't think this one is Caramel. Looks too light. Also don't think the interior is Tuscan. Tuscan is almost orange in colour. The interior in this is probably Sage
Yes, I have confirmed its caramel, but its Olive interior! Forgot olives can be brown. 😁

I have a 98 XJR with 14,000 miles 4L I think it needs a fuel pump any suggestions on how to do that? Should I take the tank out or take out the rear seats and cut a hole in the metal?
If it were me, I would cut a hole.
It's a bitch to remove that tank and you need special tools

Brett, just from my perspective. I always skip the intro, what is it good for? Far too long, not needed. The music in the background spoils your comments. I find it quite annoying, good chance that I am wrong. I mean, it is such a lovely find, the Daimler, and I am skipping most of the content. The Vanden is the star, please give it more room.

Not sure why you're so worried about the 4 Stromberg's mate. I'd rather service them than the 12 injectors I just did on mine.. a much easier job
Not sure either Jeff! I always been told they are hard to keep in tune! i guess all V12 e types have them so cannot be too hard! It will be a new experience for me!

Agreed, quad Strombergs over fuel injection on a V12. How many V12s have been lost due to fire resulting from a leak from the injection system into the Vee.
Recommission her properly and you will a real gentleman's Daimler VDP

You know a 350 chev and turbo400 will bolt straight in and you only have to tune one carburettor?? .... Just kidding, go through the brakes,fuel and cooling systems, give it a really good detail and enjoy driving it as it is. Beautiful car and great find!

As is condition I would guess 7 to 8 grand.
