    While I love the Olympics and would like the best players possible to play, I kind of agree with the clubs on this one. They are the ones paying the players salaries and already have to deal with mandatory international dates (which can get very inconvenient), so pretending they agree to more international dates AND the necessary resting time for the players, so refusing seems pretty reasonable to me.
    If anything, I think the Olympics should get the "official" international dates corresponding to other, not that important games (for example, this week's friendlies).

      You all underestimated the severe effect of injuries in football today. Players can be out of form even after they recovered. RM and Barca were effected much by this. Look at Pedri, Ansu Fati, Hazard etc. Their "investment" has gone to drain when these players can't pick up their form after injuries. I can understand why players want to participating in this tournament but clubs want to protect their interest too.

    I think the importance in terms of player fitness and injury management achieved by going through a proper full pre-season schedule is underestimated, that is always interrupted by any major tournament and even more this year with potentially two. Arguably how beneficial the money making tours to USA and other countries are to a pre-season may make it less relevant but I don't think you can equate it to playing tournament football just because the same amount of games are played.

    It's not that deep. The tournaments weren't planned in a way that even considers players participating in both tournaments. It wouldn't be good for the club and it would most likely be harmful for the player. The Olympics is there for players who weren't picked for the Euros and Copa America. France can literally field 5 starting XIs that would beat 90% of teams. Now some of those players get to go to the Olympics. There is no need for Tchouaméni and Mbappe to go to the Olympics when players like Coman might not even got to the Euros. If you want to sympathize with the players, let them rest. Don't look for ways to help them harm themselves.

    Treating friendlies as if they're the same as tournament matches is a complete red herring. In a tournament you go to your very limit and then beyond that. In a friendly you stay well below it. In a tournament your opponent will go fully into the tackles. In a friendly this rarely happens.
    Look at it this way: If you go for a run at 80% of your regular speed, you can easily run the same way on the next day. But if you go for a run at your very limit, you will probably need a few days' rest, depending on how long that run was.

    In every other sport besides football, representing your country at the Olympics is the highest honor an athlete can recive. As a player I would simply go, what are the clubs gonna do? Im sure every Real player can afford the fine the club is going to impose and I dont think that you will get another chance to play at your home Olympics.

    • @alpuzza
      @alpuzza Před 2 měsíci +2

      Not true, NBA didn't allow their players to go for many years for example. This is only true for sports like athletics, where the very sport is organized around the olympics and similar events and where a lot of the money these athlets make comes from the national federations. Football players are getting payed to do their jobs by their clubs.
      In any other job, if you missed several weeks of work without permission because you really wanted to do that same job for free for some governmental institution you would get fired without any compensation, and probably had trouble finding a similar job when everybody knows you are just going to miss it whenever you want.

    • @bestbrenin
      @bestbrenin Před 2 měsíci

      @@alpuzza no Player who is going to miss several weeks because they went to the Olympics is going to be brandmarked as troublemaker or will have any trouble finding a club in the future. That might be true for normal working people, but even than I would say it's not a problem finding a job as an Olympian athlete.
      The NBA didn't forbid their players to go, it was FIBA who excluded them as they wanted only amateurs to participate. And Nowitzki even stated that its the highest honor of his life to compete for Germany at the Olympics.

      "Olympics is for national teams equivalent to conference league- nobody cares"
      That's funny cause the conference league pays you 2.5 million prize money for qualifying for the group stages plus all the wins you achieve in the group stage.
      On top of the money gained by the knockout games.
      For any team not from a top 5 league that money is literally a life saver.
      But this donkey would not know that.

      They can for the olympics, there are certain "international windows" when clubs are forced to release any player called out to their national team, like the World Cup, the Euros, etc., and even some friendly games, like the ones being played this week. Outside of these dates they have absolutely no obligation to release the players, as they are their employees and they are the ones paying their salaries. The Olympic games don't take place during one of these windows.
