I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. Ariana is good on her own, no doubt about it, she has so much potential. But Mariah is on another league, her technique is way proficient. Comparing them on their same age, Ariana is completely crushed. Mariah mastered embellisments, phrasing, placement, resonance, disconnected registers, chest and mix, dynamics and etc. Ariana has a lot of things to improve: her diction, larynx position, breath support, jaw and tounge tension.
Facts, also Mariah naturally had that one in a million instrument, which Ariana nor 90% of pop singers can compete with .

I love Ariana. I have most of her albums. She's a very good singer, but c'mon Mariah is Mariah, one of the best ever. It's silly to claim that they're on the same level.

Ari's voice is pleasant, it's not bad at all. I think it's a matter of preference. Comparing vocal quality, any vocal coach will say Mariah has better technique and vocal quality. The reason is Ari sounds nasal at times. Her larynx is raised and closed when trying to project the high notes, her words are slurred throughout a song, also she has a plasant, but thin voice... whereas Mariah sings comfortably and has a neutral larynx position most of the time when singing the high notes, she has crazy resonance, good articulation and agility, her voice could change from pleasantly airy n smooth to sharp and strong... Anyways, I think Ari is a great singer for this time in music, one of the best..., but if she were a singer in the 90s when the Trinity was top, she would be labeled as a "good singer" only. Competition was tough back then 😘
i really miss the 90's where singers can really SANG! today it's mostly auto tuned and who has the nicer beats that tops the chart. LOL. it's not about the vocals anymore. so sad. just saying. If i want to listen some nice vocals i don't listen to the radio anymore I would rather listen to covers by normal people on youtube that can really SANG too. haha

No offense, but frankly they're not even in the same universe. Mariah Carey's vocal transition, jumps, support, resonance, range, agility, and melismata are way ahead Ariana Grande's, who is indeed a talented singer yet still immature technically, let alone Mariah Carey's artistry as she writes and produces most of her stuff.

Ariana is much closer to Aguilera than Mariah, she likes tense throaty singing and her runs and adlibs don't fit the music, she extends her falsetto up the 6th octave, while Mariah typically prefers whistle in this territory (with some falsetto and hv exceptions). Mariah at her best had the fastest runs in the industry, unparalleled musicality, her runs and adlibs are creative, she has good diction and can phrase throughout her entire range, her voice extends much lower than a typical soprano and best control over whistle register since Minnie Ripperton, so I don't really hear the similarities.
Ariana isn't even near to Christina... Christina is powerful, husky and very good at falsettos... Yes Ari can whistle, but her whole way of singing is very airy and mumbles a lot it gets so annoying
Christina’s agility and embellisments are still way superior than Ariana’s plus she has more ease than Ariana in the 6th octave.
Ralph I dislike I don't like Arians singing either but Christina ain't much better... While Arians sings with a lot of air, Christina is just the opposite, Christina sings with a lot of growls which is quite annoying... Neither of them can support a good C5 though both of them strains to go that high although C5 although that shouldn't even considered high for a girl.
You're right, Ariana does not have charisma and Mariah's songs are very difficult to sing.
Ralph Canete Christina isn't really powerful, she's pushing and straining, true vocal power comes from open, relaxed and supported singing. But she sure does sound more mature and less whiny than Grande. Of course they have different styles, but they are similar in having poor musicality and technique.

You really need to educate yourself a bit more on Mariah's vocals and her whistle register. There's a video on CZcams explaining all of that. You should really check it out.

They are NOT equally good singers or artists imo.
The fact is , no matter what age or era, Mariah has and will always be better than Ariana, even current Mariah has a wider supported range than Ariana in her whole career, Ariana is just another singer with a nice instrument but doesn't use it properly, kinda like Jessica Simpson except she totally ruined her instrument , as for Mariah she had an extraordinary instrument and she reached her full potential in her prime.

Of course Mariah is better, she has brilliant control, abilities, technique and melismas, runs and riffs, a unique, dominant and beautiful voice. She sang in a very touching way (from deep inside) and as you said from the chest.
She also has larger vocal range (she has 5-7 octaves, she gets really low to very high...she has 4 notes and her longest Note is 20 Seconds, Her vocal type is, Whatever her mood for the day is, coloratura light lyric soprano)
And she whistles phenomenally!
Plus she's here for many years and she also creates and writes her music.
And many of her music is smart and with depth unlike most of the music of today. Even though she does fun songs she has lots of songs with messages, and quality stuff she wrote or co-wrote that even saved people lives.
She’s singing “somewhere over the rainbow” in DWT. She’s lowering her larynx and darkening her tone in that tour. But in 2018 her bright tone is back. And Mariah never sings her studio version of oh holy night FULLY live. That’s why the uploader chooses that performance. She slayed 2014 Christmas shows. Her confidence then is up to the roof back then in 2014.
I remember watching Mariah's National anthem performance. She had an interview right before she went on and said she was worried about her whistle coming out. She wasn't sure if she'd hit the note. After the performance they caught up with her and she was all smiles. She said she was happy it came out.

i wonder how many people realize that thats mariahs rendition of oh holy night and that there are other ways to sing it.... its not the original rendition, but every new artist sings it like it is, Luther Vandross, Patti Labelle and Whitney Houston have there own rendition of the song too to name a few.... i mean i dont blame them the original has a darker quality or deeper melancholy vibe to it but still everyone "trys" mariah's rendition which is cuteto watch i guess

one thing I really agree is that Ariana doesn't have depth to her voice, it's like everything should be on that straining position thus sounded a bit of struggling, and the tone of Ariana is just too light no soul into it. but then again because MAriah is half black and her mother was an opera singer, that's what you get when you join two together, A great technique and great depth to the voice

The thing is Ariana has no depth to her belts or overall voice, it's all so high pitched sweet. Her voice is not very dramatic like the Mariah, Celine or Whitney. She hits the notes and yes she can belt very high but I don't think it sounds as unique/stylized as Mariah on the belts. They are not equally good, or Maybe only when it comes to technique but even on that component, I don't think Ariana can touch prime Mariah, her sound was so pristine/unique.

Personally, I don't see the point in comparing singers from two different and distant generations. Mariah is a lot older than Ariana and it's undeniable that many vocalists get better over time because they get to know their voices. That being said, they are vocal references in their own generations and I like to think that Mariah was and probably still is one of Ariana's inspirations.
Thing I want to note. When Ariana sings songs like "O Holy Night" (i.e). She uses the same exact rifts and runs that Mariah does on her recorded songs, same w/AIWFCIY. So she doesn't seem to know how to do her own tones and runs? Just saying? And Yes, Mariah wrote AIWFCIY (along with Walter A).

I don't agree that the original artist necessarily sings the song better than anybody who covers it. Whitney and Mariah I think have made better versions of most of their covers including I'll BeThere, Greatest Love of All, Without You, All the Man That I Need, etc. Whitney's I Will Always Love is not better than Dolly Parton's but both are the best renditions in their respective genres, which are like apples and oranges.
