Lot's of great singers today, if you know where to look. I guess the closest analogy today would be Beyonce. I haven't listened to her enough to tell, but I don't think she can do what Bassey could do...and I don't think Bassey could do what Cassandra Wilson does. Bassey was a broad/loud Vegas style singer with a nasal timbre and exaggerated vibrato, similar to Ethel Merman. Like Merman, I get the impression she sang unamplified a lot in her youth. Make no mistake, I still think she was great, but there are many great singers today under the radar.
Totally agree with you! No auto tune here, no gimmicks, etc.. just pure talent, singing and entertaining! You can tell it takes a lot out of her! Another great performance of hers is Talk of the Town, 1972.

This concert was at her absolute peak of her career...don’t get me wrong...just trying to imagine roaring London...every song was perfectly performed and Dame Shirley Bassey was like a Magician to the audience...her expression, the power of her voice and the drama she puts in every song...amazingly arranged...the conductor taking notice of every note from her...the endless joy when she was greeting her fans...kissing her hands...

I saw this tour in Leicester at the De Montfort Hall and Shirley wore that dress....the concerts then were only 45 mins but hells bells you knew you had seen someone special. Singers like this are nowhere to be seen these days...this is masterclass indeed.

Back in the 1960's and 1970's it was about the song writer, singer and performer. Many produced their own music too like Buddy Holly or Led Zeppelin. That was talent.
Today music is about a big voice, because of all these singing shows on TV. And even then their voices are no match for the likes of Julie Andrews or Shirley Bassey. Bassey's voice has personality and when she gets on a note, man, she's like a laser beam.
Knowing Her for over 52 years I never seen a songstress that is able to incorporate dramatics in her Performance; I don't think I ever will.

She has an impeccable voice and diction. The greatness of a singer is when you can understand clearly the words they are singing. Nancy Wilson was another singer with impeccable voice clarity and diction in her performances.

Well, diction helps understand the lyrics (which are often trite filler), but singing is really a visceral artform. Bassey was quite adept at it. I generally prefer Nancy Wilson, and Ella was the best of the best, but this concert is spectacular.

She is the greatest singer i have ever heard in my life. I personally think she is better than alot of those american singers. Just straight up excellent singing, a confident powerhouse but she has great nuance and control. I think whitney had the potential to be this good but unfortunately came out at the wrong time, took so many drugs and wasn't consistent in her delivery. Adele has the potential to become this- i believe it!
