New Technique to Make Furniture out of Bamboo

  • Tables made from bamboo folded like origami paper, and chairs with unusual and complex designs... These are some of the items of furniture made by this week's innovator. Bamboo is strong and doesn't break easily. That's why it has been used since olden times for baskets, sieves and screens. But it does also tend to warp, and that's why it hasn't been used for larger furniture. It bends out of shape when it loses its moisture. After much experimentation, our innovator has found a way to prevent that distortion. What is his surprising technique? He says that he thought it up because it pained him so much to see the neglected state of the bamboo groves in his hometown. We see how perseverance pays off, as we trace the path and motivations of a truly dedicated bamboo craftsman and innovator.

    I love bamboo. This is a marvelous process. The video is good enough, and I think that bamboo has a lot of potential. Bamboo does not produce seeds except once in a lifetime, though. Bamboo is being adopted in America, but it is surprisingly expensive! Thank you for sharing.

      zan real zan you don't need to live in tropical areas to grow or have bamboo. I live in the east side of Ohio. And we have many types of bamboo here. Bamboo isn't really a tropical plant. They don't care if it's cold. All they care about is water, water and more water.

    the heat is not necessary in cases when you use thin layers (0.6mm).. you can bend it in about 15mm diameter and it still wont brake ;)

    • @emblemcc
      @emblemcc Před 9 lety +1

      ***** man It won't, and it is not too thin.. (it shouldn't be 0.6, can be 1mm or more, depends on the actual wood sheets and the critical bends)
      You just stack one on top of the other and laminate it, this way you can make super crazy shapes without any extra heat needed. That is my practical experience.

      @emblemcc Před 9 lety

      ***** man.. what should I answer to that. :)
      just google out bamboo veneer and you get tons of result, What they use is just bit thicker version of "veneer" and that is why it is hard for them to bend it to the shape they want. They try to get the bamboo as thick as possible in order not to use too much glue as it might get over expensive and not glued well .. or what ever. ;)
      I'm not going to reply the same way as you do, I know what I'm capable of ;)

      @alf3488 Před 7 lety

      1000 Miles some bamboo is renewable resource. My great grandmother has bamboo in her yard. We chop them Down to the ground. Tell all you see is just mud and dirt. And sprig time
      They grow back. And if you pull my grandmother bamboo up from the ground. It's these little bulbs that will grow next year. Every year it's new and new growth. And you can also grow bamboo from just the trunk part of it. Buy putting it in water. That why if you see some people with bamboo it's a long stick and the top of it looks cut. Because they chopped it in many pieces and grow them.

    • @ExtraordinaryTK
      @ExtraordinaryTK Před 7 lety

      Yeah Bamboo have that varies flexibility from strength to resources but for bamboo products to last decades, the processing consume a lot of energy compare to hardwoods. Yeah some tradition bamboo building somewhere in Asia lasted 1000s of years but small products like furniture at most 40-50 years? With it being uniquely flexible it lack longevity wouldn't you agree?

    Save bamboo forests? Bamboo grows fast enough to create a full forest within a few short years. Secret multistage drying method? Why? Is this businessman afraid the world would so quickly embrace this sustainable material? Gosh, what a terrible place it would be then. Thanks for Fukushima and all of your other help though.
