    Hello Tim! This is one of the most beautiful areas in Austria. Especially in autumn, the climate is more balanced than anywhere else. That is why there are the best apples in the world here. I drive here myself every few years because I know a farmer who grows apples. There is the Golden Delicius, the monastery apple, the clear apple etc. I always buy at least 50 kilos. Compote is then canned at home. Simply wonderful when you open the glass again. As always, many greetings from Hans from the Mühlviertel.☺

    THE 21.2km-long Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg line, east of Graz, in south-eastern Austria, is closing in December 2020.
    The line is owned and operated by regional rail operator Steiermärkische Landesbahnen (STLB) and has used 1,800V DC electrification since it opened in 1931.
    The two single-car EMUs used to operate services are the original vehicles, albeit heavily modernised over the subsequent nearly 80 years in use.
    Replacement of the trains would be expensive as would conversion of the electrification to the Austrian standard of 15kV AC, so it seems closure has been chosen as passenger numbers are low.
    However, it is planned to retain the line for freight and some summer heritage services may be operated from 2021.

    • @stephanweinberger
      @stephanweinberger Před 3 lety

      The line was built on a very unfavorable route because the municipality of Gnas insisted on being connected. That meant a big detour over the hills, which may be very scenic but doubles the travel time to Bad Gleichenberg: Feldbach to Gleichberg is only about 12km by road, compared to the 21km train journey. And ironically because of the terrain, the station of Gnas is located rather far from the village as well...
      There were plans in the 1930s to extend the line to Bad Radkersburg in the south (which would be much more useful today and would likely have saved the line) but unfortunately they never materialized.

    Tim, another great glimpse of an Austrian wonderland. Such peaceful surroundings thar drift by at a reasonable pace. Hopefully the water damage done in the wintertime can be fixed. Such a loss of heritage and tourist potential should the line close for the want of will to maintain or repair it. Peter

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Peter, Austria is a beautiful country, although often compared with Switzerland, it is very different, to start with the architectural styles are individual to each country, no pretty Swiss style chalet houses dotted around the mountains and the mountains, whilst dramatic, have a softer outline. Where both countries are similar is their love of railways, both national and heritage, I can't believe that the Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg Railway will be allowed to slip away because of a little water damage, the Austrian railway enthusiasts are made of stronger stuff, I can't imagine them standing aside to let this gem from the past disappear. Take care. Tim.
