Team Innova’s Philo Brathwaite shows us his disc recommendations for those moving beyond the Disc Golf Starter Set and taking their game to the next level.
YES INNOVA , please make these a pack. Call it the " Listen to Philo pack " put a link to this video on the package. Not only does the video let players advancing know ,but a new player would hear I need the beginner pack first 🙂
The more I watch these videos with Philo, the more I sense that he is a great dude-Just so chill, and such a good ambassador for the sport. I would love to sit down and have a burrito with him. Innova, you are lucky to have him.
Man I bag 3 roc3's because of this guy. I watched Philo throw that disc and he sold me on it. I'm no where near his level but it does what I need it to do. Thanks Philo you shed light on something I probably would have passed over and it filled a gap in my game 😉
Ditto previous comments. Wish I had this advice when I first started. I’d have saved some $$ and more importantly a lot of frustration. Thank you Philo!!
If anyone at Innova is listening...... more Philo. You'll get more views, we like him, we trust him, and he speaks better than any other pro you offer. Just a thought.
I've been throwing the champion beast since 2001 2002 and have yet to find anything as reliable or durable, this thing really is a beast. Indestructible runs from those years they are
A valkyrie is a good choice as well for the beast slot. Champ roc3 is awesome. I have a metal flake champ roc3 and it's super reliable. I love it! KC aviar is a classic, can't go wrong with it. I just have no use for it in my bag. My Nova's, aviarx3 and razor claw have my putter section pretty well filled out.
Listen to Philo kids. He knows what he is talking about. These three discs are a great next step from the starter pack. In fact, maybe Innova should put these in a pack and call it the "Intermediate Pack" and market it to be sold to players after they try the starter pack, or for players that maybe are starting their DG journey, but are more athletic already and can start with these discs.
I wish someone would have told me this when I first started. I filled up a bag with discs way too big and overstable for me because the pros threw them, and recently spent over a year relearning out to throw because I learned wrong to make those giants discs fly "right"
Just basing on the starter sets that Innova and Discraft have after using a putter for a year that I needed a midrange, a better wind putter, and a driver. I picked a Stingray, an approach only labelled Wizard in a now illegal too stiff of G9i plastic, a Leopard, and a Valkyrie. Only Pro plastic was top durability in 2004, the other was DX and since both lasted at the time in 2000's fairly close in durability I got DX to save money so I could get an older style smooth nylon Innova Deluxe for $19.99 not including tax.
I dont know about roc3 and beast for someone who's been playing a year or less... theres a reason Anthony Barela bags a champion roc3. Champ Roc3 was my first midrange and it forces beginners to throw flexes for almost every shot. My midrange choice would be a champ mako3.
A flex is when an overstable disc is released on an anhyzer angle so the disc moves left to right and then fades out to the left at the end (for a righty backhand throw). Watch any coverage of Nikko Locastro, he throws a ton of flexes. Learning how to throw flat and hyzer with lower speed and more understable discs offers more benefit to beginners. Throwing discs too overstable will result in beginners relying solely on flexing discs for any sort of distance.
People should be able to throw Beast and Roc3 after a year. But obviously not those who only play for fun a couple times a month and never actually train and pay attention to their technique. This video is most likely meant for people who actually picked disc golf up as a real hobby/sport, not just as a pastime activity. For people who grew out of their starter packs, hence a video about discs *beyond* the starter pack.
He has one from a couple years ago. the reason why I don’t think they’re going to do another one is because philo only throws 5 molds and his bag never changes, so it will be the same as the last video
@@jordanraymathews7841 Just a dull reason not to do it tho. Fun to see more of Philo even if he talks about the same discs. I think his bag varies tho, depending on the course.
It's all in the form. Scott stokley taught me when I only knew about disc golf for 4 months. I nearly doubled my distance after learning how to hold a disc. Look for a pro in your area and see if they're willing to give some tips for free or small fee.
I will actually recommend the Champion/Champion Glow Valkyrie that is if the regular Champion Valkyrie run is the stiff stuff, over the Beast as you then have to find discs for the Beast that are the Valkyrie type wing or the other wing of Beast disc flies slow no matter how much speed you put on the mold.
It's way more consistent than a discs thats very straight. Especially in light wind. I used to putt only dx and classic aviars. Kc Aviars are way more consistent because the disc works more right to left at the end of the flight, making there be a larger surface area of the basket to catch it.
From my experience the Beast isn't a viable disc for most beginner. The Rock3 isn't comfortable for most beginners as well. From my experience beginners are comfortable with shallow discs with no bead. Also anything over a speed eight isn't really useful for most beginners. A Leopard3, Mako3 in star plastic and a putter more shallow than the Aviar would be perfect. I don't know anyone who likes champion plastic. It's much to stiff has very little grip and in the winter can break.
Can we get a Philo stamped roc (maybe in a KC type of plastic)? He's the best roc thrower in the world, it'd be nice to have one with his name on it.
I think Philo only throws DX Rocs though
Put his name on it and I’ll buy 3.
@@discgolfwes then get the F2 ROC that come out stiff and feel like KC but are DX in durability.
PB Pro Roc! Something I could definitely get behind. He's been bagging dx Rocs for years and throws them better than most
That would be awesome.

I love how the Roc3 had a Paul McBeth 4x stamp on it
lol the irony
Are you a cuber @Josie Thomas?
Owen Morrison mhm
@@blureo5644 Nice, me to.
I have a paul x4 champ roc3, and it is soooo good.
Seeing Philo makes me happy. I've had a champ beast for about 5 months and a champ roc3 for 8 months. Can't get enough disc golf.
The more I watch these videos with Philo, the more I sense that he is a great dude-Just so chill, and such a good ambassador for the sport. I would love to sit down and have a burrito with him. Innova, you are lucky to have him.

I’d buy that set right now Innova. Thanks for the tips.

The Roc3 has been in my bag since the beginning. I have dx, champion, and star Roc3’s. It’s probably my favorite disc.
Love my beast! So easy to forehand
Excellent video
I 2nd the Philo ROC! Why on earth is that not a thing? Mad love Philo!
Philo is awesome!

I so hope he comes to the Treat Lakes tourney. Whenever see him on screen I shout PHILO! Will be able to do in person. Once.everyone done.of course.
Philo should be on the Star team

Philo is actually pretty happy in this video! I have that same roc3 don't throw it anymore. Collectors item 🤪

Yeah I'm doing the same thing. Got more understable discs especially since I cant throw a good anny yet.
Good suggestions!
Thanks Philo I'm going to do that

need more philo videos

Philo for prez.
6 months and ready to throw 10 speed. I'm so much behind schedule 😅😅😅
Can’t go wrong with those!
But I’m adding to the list a Teebird!
Joe Brannon Yeah, to me the Teebird is the next natural disc after getting comfortable with the Leopard in the starter pack.
We want Philos In the bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good job my friend.
Get Philo back on the Star team Innova.
Him not being in the star team is just wild... he’s doing commentary and always in the spotlight. Josh Anthon is star team and hasn’t played all year
18th hole at chavez?
It is virtually impossible to get any disc Macbeth uses they sell out as soon as they're put up for sale.
When is it time to upgrade? I'm new and I'm terribly inconsistent

Throw more putter only rounds. If you are z for hander get a champ firebird

Tiger Woods of DG
How anybody can putt consistently with a disc that will fade out early is beyond me.
Sounds like you need some more spin on your putts.

Champ beast is bad for learning imo. Valkyrie is about the fastest disc I'd recommend to a beginner
It's not for learning though. The point of this video is when you've learned the starter pack and are moving on to new discs.
