Nacho Libre - THIS WAS A TRUE STORY?!

  • Nacho Libre is the story of Ignacio- a catholic monk friar who feeds the hungry by day, and moonlights as a flamboyant luchador called Nacho Libre. The film highlights Nacho’s duality between two life paths that he’s equally devoted to and packs in scene-to-scene slapstick comedy, toilet humor, and countless kicks in the ass. I should also mention that it’s loosely based on the true story of a Mexican friar who masqueraded around town as a wrestler to raise money for his church... But I believe there’s more to it than that.
It’s a movie that was co-written and directed by the same indie hero that brought us Napoleon Dynamite and stars Jack Black during the prime of his comedy career. This is a movie that was destined for dollars. But today’s episode is not about how much money the movie raked in, but instead it’s about reading between the lines and looking for the deeper meaning in this otherwise silly and feel-good film. If you’re in the mood to have some laughs and watch a dude on the internet try to assign meaning to the cinematic treasure that is Nacho Libre- then make sure you grab a snack, grab a drink, and Supplex that like button- because today we’re going to figure out once and for all- what's Nacho Libre REALLY about?

Random (sad) fact: the guy who played Ramses was an actual Luchador in Mexico. A few years ago, he was in a match and suffered a fatal heart attack. He was supposed to win, but after he fell over dead, the official didn't know what to do and had to have the opponent win. RIP Ramses.

Thanks for this. My wife and I love this movie and still put it on here and there for a fun movie with lots of laughs and a feel good story. I lived in NYC when this movie came out and I can still remember seeing the big promotional posters of nacho all over the place. Love the song about encarnacion, lol

Edit to add I would LOVE a Gentleman Broncos deep dive.

Gentleman Broncos is worth a watch if you’re a fan of Napoleon Dynamite or Nacho Libre. It is a slow burn but has outstanding characters and a great ending. Highlights are the characters played by Jemaine Clement, Sam Rockwell, and (of course) Jennifer Coolidge. Dusty’s albino snake steals scenes, too. 💩 😊

I have this as 1 of the best wrestling films, next to The Wrestler, READY TO RUMBLE and, well. yet to see the iron claw, Fighting with my family was pretty good. so, guess that takes the 4th spot. Even though iron claw has got pretty much the GOLD reception as 1 of the best wrestling films.

He's a genuine character and talented performer that puts his heart into his work. He's unabashedly silly and confident, but also both sincere and down to earth. Others - myself included - like people like that and don't judge people's worth by how they look.
