I did the same thing by retiring to Thailand this year. I could bleed cash in The States in retirement - or come here and have 5x the life that I would have had back there. I watch my money go so much further. I enjoy access to the beach and warm year round weather. I eat interesting new foods. I meet new beautiful & friendly people, both locals & expats, who have no agenda & who want nothing but joy in their day. I have nobody ranting at me about politics. Nobody is taxing the taxes on top of my taxes. And I am living on even less that you stated here - and doing so EASILY.
What have I given up? Absolutely NOTHING. And loving it. I can't spend my money, it goes so far here.
I agree !
This is so well said
Awesome Scooter! Do you have a pension or just living on investments? I went for a month back in Jan/Feb. I loved Bangkok.
I have been building my nest egg but not sure when to throw in towel and retire. I am 43. I think I could make it but not sure. Would like about 2k a month and maybe a few grand a year extra to make a trip back to the states yearly.

Thank you for breaking down some useful data. People can retire early.
It can cost a lot less retiring in the right location.
I also went through a costly divorce and bounced right back by hunkering down for a while.
Now I'm freer than I've ever been.
Outstanding
It’s not easy but I’m proud of you for not giving up after a tough divorce
You kept going
Rebuilding yourself and that is the way
You can live under $1,000 if you live as a local and know where to rent a place/eat. Most people in Chiang Mai live under $600 a month.
True!
My hotel is under $500 a month
All utilities and WiFi included
I've gotten to Thailand after watching so many of your videos. Thank you for making them. It's really nice over here, and I'll be just chilling out in Pattaya for the next month. It's so nice having a beach closeby.
This makes me feel great !!
Enjoy
I’m very happy you went
Your retirement budget should include things like coming back to do banking and other unexpected life events.
Another great video. I have a few years to get my own things in order. You've given me hope that I won't have to work until I'm dead.
Absolutely
You now have a second option !
You can get your laundry washed, dried, ironed, and folded for about $3 a week. I’ve been going to Chiang Mai for 20 years for several months. You can get a much nicer apartment for about $20 a night with a pool and exercise room with a monthly rate.
Very nice ! You know the way !
I have been looking but haven't found anything this cheap. I would like someplace close to groceries since I won't have a car. Exactly where? I just want to stay for a month to see how it goes. 3$ a week for laundry all done? Wow!
@@lolaz1936 yes true :-)

Don't be lured to the northern provinces like Chiang Mai. There is a dry and hot season which makes it the world;s most pollution place for about 3 months from March to June. The heat is terrible. The smog is everywhere. Search Bangkok Post to see articles about Chiang Mai pollution. The rest of the year from July to Feb is OK weather and smog-wise.
The south is much less polluted. Phuket is expensive but there are places like Krabi, Satun, Koh Lanta you are check out.
Phuket is pricey for sure
I found a low cost hotel though that was really nice in 2023!
I like the phi phi islands
Also Hoy Hin and Cha Am
Spot on burning season is a shocker up there. Even Bangkok cops it pretty bad at that time of the year as well.

For those doing intermittent fasting and skipping breakfast in hot climates like Thailand...you better really hydrate like crazy. The dehydration sneaks up rapidly and can literally knock you out. I came close 2 times. Adjusted diet...carbs for breakfast no problem...and most afternoons I knocked down those fantastic fresh fruit smoothies. Different ballgame entirely. Be careful! 😃 🌞☀️
Good point! Thank you
Yeah be careful of the heat stroke very common in Thailand.
While traveling in SEA, I mostly met people traveling on budgets 500-1000 EUR per month. I guess the only difference with you is that they did not stay in private rooms, but they stayed in hostel dorm. However, they also traveled a lot and were constantly moving.
I think that’s a good point

Your videos have a great positive energy, and from my experience very accurate. I'm 52, retired in Chiang Mai 6 months ago, 30 years corporate, wiped out by divorce, bit over the "regime" in the West, and now resetting to a more relaxed, affordable and simple lifestyle (everything you talk about). For a nice walk, look up “the Monk's trail” (15min Grab from Old City).

You are blessed and you will be fine
I retired at 51 and while I still own my home, we rent it out while we travel for 6-8months each year. Even when you own your home, you still have taxes, insurance, maintenance, utilities and when you need a new roof or central heating and cooling system, that can be $25k or more and the amount of stress that comes with that is not possible for most people and keeps them from renting.
You have a great set up
Traveling and good use of your home to provide income !
That’s what I’m afraid of. The maintenance of a home here in TX can be quite substantial. Roof, central A/C etc. Might be better off selling and investing elsewhere.

I was pondering moving to Chiang Mai, until I learned of the several months of smoke filled skies every year. I have $250,000 in cash and I collect $2,150 in
Social Security monthly, so I have plenty to retire in SE Asia. I also do part time remote work which adds another $2,000 to my monthly income, so I could

I’m out of the country after 30 days as I like to bring different countries to the viewers. Change things up.
An alternative for some people like me is to live on a small sailboat. In the proper season I can move around to different places. I have been to about 40 countries through the years. I left Florida in 2006, sailed around the world and back to Florida in three years. Got another boat and left Florida again in 2010. Sailed almost all the way around and am now in Trinidad waiting out hurricane season. My monthly costs are about the same but do nor include the initial cost of the boat. Most places I can keep the boat anchored for free or on a free or low cost mooring.

Something that saddens me in America is seeing people in their 70’s and older working at McDonalds or in some other job when you know they don’t have the energy or desire to be there. My grandparents retired at 55 and suffered no decrease in their standard of living. They were not investors, they did own their house. Things have changed so much since then.

@@WilliamFluery true
@@WilliamFluerywhile it’s true that none of us escapes the consequences of our actions, it’s also true that in the US education system we’re not taught to think critically. I didn’t know logic as a discipline existed until I was in college. Combine that with the powerful media forces that shape what people think and feel they ought to do and it’s a recipe for short term pleasure over the rewards of delayed gratification. There isn’t any good (moral/ethical) reason that logic and financial acumen can’t be taught in our schools, and that media could align more with what’s in the best interest of the population, but a majority of people would have to know and understand that, which is difficult given the state of education and economic forces propelling media. It’s a classic chicken/egg dilemma. The bottom line for me is-I feel compassion for those elderly people who still have to work for minimum wage. Their circumstances I feel are due to lack of education rather than willful materialism. Also the boomer generation grew up in a time when Social Security was robust and economic conditions were more stable and affordable. So there’s that.

I just discovered your channel and I'm enjoying the content... I've lived in Chang Mai for over 10 years and close to 15 years living in the Kingdom of Thailand... I've traveled the world, lived / worked in over 50 countries and could afford to retire anywhere in the world I want within reason, but I chose Thailand... Not just for the cost of living, but for the culture, the people, the climate and the amenities here... I love it here and have zero plans on going anywhere else... Having said that, I still cringe when people make videos on how "cheap" they can live here... Once you get past the honeymoon phase of living somewhere, you still have to come to grips with the realities of your decision... Can you live in a Bed & Breakfast for the rest of your life? Can you live without your own transportation, health insurance, creature comforts, etc? The answer is yes, but are you willing to? The bottom line is that you CAN live here on $2,000 USD a month, but your lifestyle will be limited...Chok Dee Na...

@@eurotrash2915 haha yes I understand :-)
Welcome to Thailand sir 🙏🏻🫶🏻💕🇹🇭
Thank you :-)
Have a great week
I have nothing.. I live day to day, pay check to paycheck. No assets. So, I'm really hoping to be able to move to Asia when I can collect social security (if it will even exist) and live a simple life. Because we know you cannot do it here in the USA.
You have a good plan
I Am sending blessings your way
50k for retirement is pretty steep and i can't afford that. Great food footage and thanks for keeping it real.
Hmmm , I understand
I live on $2000 a month , actually below that.
Less than $24,000 a year
Not sure what the 50 thousand you refer to is from. Can you elaborate please so I can clear up any misunderstanding?
@@RetireandGo Its the Federal Statistics 50k retirement 3:12 in your video. I'm just saying the governments are basically out of touch. Not many have that amount for retirement. I'm on your side and believe that number is pretty high.
@@mst6429 got it !
Thank you !
Hi Chris, do you cover health insurance in any of your videos, ie do you pay for health insurance? As what happens if you have a serious health issue on your travels and you need to go in to hospital? Thanks
Every month I talk about healthcare coverage in my 30 day assessment
Check out Genki Travel Insurance
They don’t pay me anything either ( heck, I wish they did haha )
Love the vid BUT the reality is not everyone wants to live in Asia so like us here in 🇦🇺 Australia our annual costs are $100k per annum to pay our bills and live life as we do …. Lucky we can retire although not 1st class!
True
Thank you for the input
It is appreciated
Have a great day
Liked and subscribed! How can an American stay in Thailand long term?
There’s a new 5 year visa to check out
I’m traveling more but maybe eventually I’ll stay longer
And in additional want to say that US stock market in average give +15% in year. So, even if you have just 200000 usd, its enough for retirement.
Nice ! That sounds good to me
Thanks for the video
You are most welcome
Thanks for answering my question from a few videos ago. So you are living off $24k a year from distributions from a $400k + investment portfolio--earning roughly 6% annually.
That is roughy it yes
35 years of investing
One destructive divorce ( peaceful though haha )
Rebuild of portfolio
It’s been a wild ride
I already know how to live in Thailand. I need to learn how to retire there and he keeps on repeating 😂
@@jimboslice5303 I understand :-)
You will be good to go
Plan, prepare, invest
And enjoy the blessing of each day along the way ok?
Say no to sink washing clothes😂 if you don’t HAVE too.
The heck with that
Fast cheap
The best
Hi Chris, when does your social security pension (the state pension) kick in for you, and what will that be approximately per year? That added to your dividend income would go along way to hitting a great annual pension eh? Thanks
Oh my it will be many years :-)
I’m 54 haha
another great video! I dont know if you have talked about this, but while you are travelling are you looking to find a place/location to keep as a low cost base in the future, or you are just happy to travel
Great question
I will probably travel this way for two more years then look for long south East Asia visas
Thoughts?
@@RetireandGo yes I was thinking something similar. Thailand seems to have the best visas. Malaysia looks tempting as well.
@@stevenponte6655 I can see Malaysia Thailand and Indonesia being my main three locations eventually
What are your thoughts ?
An airline pilot I knew would shower w/his clothes on and wash them and then take them off and shower his body. I retired to Thailand when I was 48 and first came here as a backpacker in 1974... what a life. Though I will say not everyone is up for the trip. Through the years I have offered more than 10 friends free airfare to come for a vacation and nobody took me up on the offer. I guess they were afraid of a place so foreign and unique.
What a cool place to backpack in 74 it must have been
Do you have photos from then ?
It would make a good book about that time
@@RetireandGo I did a 1 year around the world trip in 1974 - some rough travel through the Middle East. Thailand was my favorite.I was back frequently in the 80s as an exporter to USA and then retired here in 1998 - and spent nearly 20 years living in my wife's village in Tak Province. In 1974 if you saw another Westerner you both stopped and said hello and exchanged information. Of course, the world is so different from then. I was not a photographer but I did have a little Brownie Camera and returned home with 7 photos, 5 of which were the Taj Mahal... I am the guy who married the Thai family. We have a home in Doi Saket in addition to the village and we raised a niece who is now at CM University. If I might offer a tip, if you plan on living in Thailand - learning the language is a great introduction to this unusual and very unique culture.
@@2kkto2 I appreciate this thank you !
24k a year from dividend, so if you add in your Social Security pension, that will still earn you about 48k a year, I think.
That would be sweet
I’m not planning on social security though
I’m building my retirement as if it won’t be there
If it is , that will be gravy on top :-)
Question for you. What about your things that need a bit of security while you are out walking around? Do you have a safe in room? And important documents? I would think that you can scan most and upload to the cloud, but some you have to have hard copies, especially if you are doing a lot of border hopping. And a laptop. or other things. I have things that are hard to part with, jewelry, precious metals, S&W, tax documents, etc.. So what have you done with that sort of stuff? I traveled a bit for work in 2022 so I know I can travel with a carryon only. Just not sure about the other, and long term... with no 'house', as I will have to sell the house to fund it. No way I can stay in this house long term and not work till death because of the cost even though it's paid off. Too many things to do, maintenance, taxes, insurance, always something eating at the cash.
Great question
Check out my shorts brand , oniel brand model name is TRVLR
I have a link in description
They have zipper pockets
Secret pocket for passport
I really have no other valuables
I carry my cellphone, cards, passport
My laptop is a thin little cheap

I don’t even worry about break ins

Does this help ?
Are you of Italian heritage?
Why not consider Italy or Portugal country side. It is much cheaper.
You can buy a cheap property with increasing value.
15$ a day is a lot.
Patrick Armstrong from Mamilla (Paddy from Phillipines on YT) lives in a 5star skyscraper for only 160 $ a month.
Maybe a better option for you
I heard that Italy was a good low cost destination to check out
You may be right !
Not bad, but for me it seems weird to eat always outdoor, but try to save money on washing mashine.
Haha I understand
Don’t think to deep on these things
:-)
In 2022, I retired at 55. My PERA pension is basically your monthly budget. If I sell my house here in Albuquerque, what do you suggest I invest in? Thanks for keeping our dreams alive.
If your home can rent for good income that’s an option
I like dividend stocks as there is no hassle
No renter, no landlord to pay a fee to
7:28 You’re right! $400,000 (your house) won’t get you very far here in the US. But sell it, invest, retire in Thailand and live comfortably for under $2,000 a month.
Yes true
It was the right way to go
And I spend around $1300 a month, then use the rest to buy more dividend stocks to actually build my retirement!
17:32 If they had a mental hospital for animals that cat would be locked up.

What do you do for health insurance? Do you have plans for medical emergencies?
Great question
I have travel insurance
One company to look at is called Genki travel insurance
I have an emergency fund in the bank and cash as well to get me out of country
:-)
I achieved $24000 income from buying three rental homes for under $200000 (including makeready/initial repairs). The first one I bought with cash 8 years ago for less than $36000 after getting it ready to rent. The other two I bought during COVID after selling my paid off sticks and bricks house. They were under $160000 combined after repairs. They are all three trailers and I own the lots they are on. Only one of them has an HOA fee, which is $100 a year. I have property manager so I don't have to do anything. Rents total $3000/mo and after all expenses (mgmt, taxes, insurance, maintenance repairs, the one HOA fee, and my income tax) I net $2000/mo. I think this is an overlooked investment method (trailers specifically). Key is you've got to own the land, too. Income tax benefits are great with this method of course. If maintenance/repairs ever exceed the usual $2-3K/yr I don't have to pay income tax.
You are doing great !
That’s good monthly income
Another great video, thank you. Been wracking my brain trying to work out how to navigate the tax obligations for Thailand now with the new laws. Staying over 180 days in a calendar year makes you a tax resident and you have to now pay tax on worldwide earnings. How do you navigate this please? Are you in Thailand more then 180 days per calendar year? Interested in your thoughts. Looks like you are there longer then 180 days. Also, your thoughts on the new DTV visa. Although it’s great, people don’t realise the new tax laws still apply with this visa and work hand in hand.
I’m using the tourist visa, then I pop to Bali or Malaysia
Return later in the year
Best way for me
No tax issues
What are your thoughts ?
flight ticket is so cheap, you can travel to nearby countries several times in a year.

With inflation 2000 a month won t be enough in 5 or 10 years A person could live retired for 40 years.
