Should Classic Cars Be Saved? California wants them banned - Let’s Attend A Car Event

  • I attended a classic car and truck event called Santa Barbara auto night. This event is held every other Tuesday night. The motto of this car event is “it is it doesn’t matter what you drive come show off your ride.” With the California governor wanting to go all electric in California for automobiles they are trying to impose laws to ban or restrict driving classic cars in California not far in our future. What would happen to our classic car culture if California passes laws restricting the use of vintage vehicles? Watch this video and try to support local car enthusiasts and events in your area.

    Thanks for the video Rob. I too, think it's a very important cause to save these vehicles that we hold so dear to our hearts, it's also part of our North American history and culture, in the US and Canada. We are winding down our car season up here. We had our last official car show yesterday and last official Cars N' Coffee today. The weather has been nice and if it holds out there will be a few pop up get togethers until it gets close to the snow flying. There's already a few people that have tucked their rides away for the season, and getting geared up for the building , refreshening and repairing season we call winter. I'm hoping to get my wagon painted over winter and have it on the road next summer even though I don't think it will have an interior in it. Keep up the good work on the videos Rob, always look forward to them, and keep an eye on Gary's channel as he and I are going to be doing a few videos together this winter.

    I think classic cars should definitely be saved!! Not everyone can afford electric vehicles, and I have a feeling it would affect our emergency response vehicles in a way that make them hard to maintain and keep going with electric fire trucks or anything like that. It may be cleaner, but it's asking so much of a price that not everyone can pay or afford to maintain.
    Those are some really cool cars. My favorite cars were the El Camino and your 72 Mazda. One of these when I get a fire truck, I'll take it to a local car show. I really enjoyed watching this.

      Thank you for watching and responding . I agree with you that strictly electric could cause a major burden for many companies, consumers, and emergency services . I also agree that classic cars should be saved not only for historical reasons but also for car enthusiasts to preserve.

    The irony is it's more environmentally sound to maintain a classic car and keep it in shape than it is to resource, mine, transport, build, and transport a new car. It isn't even about the environment anymore, much more about brownie points and strangling a market into existence. Heck, you look at the new crud, say for instance a 1994 Sentra and compare it to the 2022 Sentra, similar horsepower, similar mpg. 30 years difference, except the 2022 transmission has half the life of a 1994 one.

    Man, there was some cool stuff there Rob !! That '57 Ranchero was probably my favorite. You're too young to remember but back a few years the EPA was trying to pass legislation that wouldn't allow vehicles on the road without their original engine in it. THAT would have put an end to hot rodding at its best !! At that time virtually all the auto parts stores had petitions for us to sign if you were against that kinda of legislation. Everyone I know signed every petition in every auto parts store for miles around. Another thing you may or may not remember.... Ford was going to drop the Mustang out of their lineup. Then there was a massive campaign by regular people like me and you that petitioned Ford to NOT drop the line....It was a major outpouring of support for keeping the Mustang alive !! So YES...save all of them you can.

      Thank you !!!! I had not known about this!!! It is very important for us to gather together and protect the aftermarket parts suppliers and the car enthusiasts community. Thank you for your support of saving classic vehicles in the past and present. I also like that 57 Ford ranchero. The owner and I actually know each other from the automotive parts industry. He was a parts counter person and part’s manager at a local automotive dealership near my shop. We had a great time at the show together talking about vintage hot rods and classic cars.

    Classic cars should be saved!! It seems like California wants to ban almost everything, including the sales of new ICE vehicles by 2035. 😢😢 Let's hope the people in California wake up and vote out some of the crazy politicians in the next election, including governor Gavin Newscum.
    My favorite classic cars are from the 1950's. I liked the black 1957 Ford Ranchero, that's in the beginning of this video.

      Hello Frank, I agree with you the majority of the people in California voting need to wake up and vote for new leadership. I just don’t understand how things can go so downhill and the majority still vote the same way every election.
      I am glad you enjoy 50s classics like that black 57 Ranchero . That puts out 385 HP on the dyno with a built 302. Not to shabby

    More likely new ICE powered vehicles will be banned in California, but classic cars aren’t a significant source of pollution given their relatively small numbers.
    PS - Personally I’m hoping green hydrogen will give EV a run for their money
    PS2 - Should politicians overreach, the CA proposition process will result in an exemption for classic cars.

      Thank you for your feedback. Los Angeles has contributed to most of California’s high emissions . The traffic, stop and go driving freeway conditions are a major factor . As far as Classic cars most are run on occasion . Do they pollute? Yes they certainly pollute more than modern vehicles. I am supportive of a clean environment and modern fossil fuel cars run extremely clean these days . Car manufacturers and engineers have worked hard improve modern vehicles to run extremely clean . We have come a long way towards improving our environment. As far as Classic cars they should be preserved because they are part of our heritage and anyone that has the desire to own and operate one should have the right to do so.

      @@gaspumprobrob you are too nice this guy. But what you said is true. Except for a few taken fact that that old classic car has already been made so they don't have to strip mind they don't have to bring up more oil to make the plastic parts for the car all you got to do is keep to her and good shape. Really if you want control air pollution from vehicles unique Cadillac converters as such at the gas stations. They have the highest missions and more sparsely populated areas compared to cars. That's a study that was done fifty years ago. They figure it's easier to shove the stuff down the throats of car older than it would be big corporations. Now my office almost always had a steering wheel 🛞. So I appreciate the cleaner air. The emission controls have their place and they seem to work fairly well. I remembers when sitting around a few cars on an overpass waiting for the light to change meant that I was going to gag to death on the exhaust fumes. But it isn't like that anymore.

      I agree! Thank you for your input on this subject . Good point-lithium strip mining is something that rarely is taken into consideration . And yes more oil to produce plastic parts . Even the battery cases are made of plastic!

    Definitely save these vehicles. This is history. Too many things have been taken away already. Think of one jet taking off and the pollution it belches out. These classics are driven very rarely for the most part. I don't see these cars contributing a big part of the pollution. They are fine.

    The people against the old cars are applying pressure to everybody! In the car hobby people just aren't standing up to it. Now is California's turn. Vermont I learned just today that a couple of months ago they did away with their title loopholes. You know the ones that a lot of old car collectors barn finds, used to get their cars titled and licensed . I never did it. Thought about it but never did a lot of people did. So the tightening down on the old cars. Some of the older cars are pretty much a men to an electric pulse but you're disabled any other vehicle. At least in theory somebody could use this at random to disable your modern car 🚗.

    • @gaspumprob
      @gaspumprob  Před 7 měsíci

      Oh yes it’s California’s turn. Let’s see what happens next. How about a loophole of registration out of state if one owns multiple properties? Would they stop a classic car from out of state driving across state lines???? Instead of a out of state fruit 🍎 check upon entry they would turn away classic cars?

    Okay electronic vehicles have a bigger inorganic footprint by time they reach the showroom floor then the usual life which is approximately 10 years of the new fossil fuel ⛽😳 vehicle. I'm assuming that they're talkin 10 years because that seems to be the standard by which people say cars last. So that's your little Mazda! The red one. I know you showed it some before but this angle is different and those are pretty big seats it looks like for the front. Are they factory stock?

    • @gaspumprob
      @gaspumprob  Před 7 měsíci

      Interesting what you mentioned about the ten year average. I agree with that and to top it off the lithium batteries in a Tesla will have a life expectancy of about that long if not less depending on several factors. I was told the cost will be $20,000 to replace the battery pack. I guarantee you most of those cars will go straight to the salvage yard when the consumer is confronted with a $20,000 repair bill.
      Yes that is my Mazda and the stock seats are sitting up in my attic because the support was terrible. I installed Honda Prelude SI seats from a car I parted out years ago. They feel great and no drilling or welding was required! What shocked me is that 57 Ranchero also had Prelude seats!!!! He chose a older prelude so his where not as substantial as mine. He had his re-upholstered in red but mine I left factory gray and black which looks good in the car.

    Because of the minimal use of these rare vehicles, they actually contribute less emissions than any vehicles on the road. They are not daily drivers and if you own one, you wish to put as few miles on it as possible to retain its value !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I hate to say I told you so but I will. What I'm referring to is there's a couple of Hispanic or Latino car clubs I enjoy watching the lowriders and all the work that goes into the masterpieces that they build. No other folks can build lowriders as well. You ought to see the VW bug that I saw as a lowrider, it takes the price for lowest thing I've ever seen. I told him they need to get out in front of this because California is making rumblings about restricting classic cars. These people influential and their car clubs in the hobby and they both told me there's laws in place. Laws can be changed but they politely scoffed at the idea 💡. I wish I was wrong. This is a wake-up call to the rest of the country because California carries lot of clout because of its enormous state population. I suggest that's how California gets away with some of the crap that they do. Like electric ⚡ trucks and only electric ⚡ trucks! That's right around the corner.

      Let me add to this - I am being told that after Jan 1 2024 we cannot buy gas powered lawnmowers , chain saws, leave blowers etc . All sales of gas powered equipment like this will be prohibited in California. We have two major landscaping companies in my work district that have already converted to electric or battery powered equipment planning ahead. You should see the heavy battery back packs these guys are lugging around attached to leave blowers. One company already has a container half full of dead batteries just sitting.
