Just an FYI for everyone talking “open mindedness”. Traditionally, women were not allowed to participate in theater (I.e. men only), but the theater performances still contained female characters. So of course, the men dressed as women and portrayed that role.
Him dressing in women’s clothes (for theater) isn’t anything new in China or Japan. Also for anyone who watches Chines fantasy dramas (eg Ashes of Love), all the men dress in those flowing robes, so it’s not anything unusual either.

This was actually also the case for a long time in European theatre (starting from Greek theatre around 532 BC). From what i could gather from the sources i´ve linked it´s just that female actors in Chinese theatre is more recent (start of the 1900s) by maybe a couple hundred years, but female actors actually only started becoming common in western society in the late 1800s.

Not really. Women can act in theater in ancient China. Just depends on which kind of drama. Some dramas traditionally only have male actors, so men would dress up like ladies in the show; while some other dramas traditionally only have actresses, so in those shows women would dress up like men to play male parts (such as Yu Ju, Kun Qu).
