A movie about Garfield should be a slam dunk. He sleeps, eats lasagna, loves to humiliate Odie, and constantly ridicules Jon. Garfield's personality is defined by all of these traits.
So why in the world is the plot about a neglectful father coming back to win over his son?
Yeah, it's weird: the character's most iconic elemenets are his lazyness, gluttousness and snarky sense of humour, and in most comic strips are about character interactions with his housemates and neighboors or dealing with shenanigans at home.
I don't get why the movies and most of his animated media in general try to shove him into a bunch of grand adventures, Garfield's overall character goes entirely against this sort of premise, unless you manage to find a way to pull it off really well.
...... it's a cat who eats and sleeps all day, how can you translate that routine into a feature film
@@TrojanStrikeAnimations42069I mean they can find creative ways to showcase Garfield's traits and put them into a feature film. It's better than forcing a generic plot just to fill time :/
Because those traits don't correlate to taking up at least an hour and a half in a feature film. Its why every Garfield film has had to add something to give it more substance.
@@TrojanStrikeAnimations42069 Just make the actual story about Jon and use Garfield as a snarky comedic relief who comments on what happens while staying a normal lazy cat. Would fit his character so mich better than whatever this melodramatic bullshit is.
Something not everyone is talking about is how the character dynamic between Garfield and Odie feels weird and off. Not much is here from other Garfield media, but Garfield and Odie are basically front and center, and their dynamic is totally different here. In most other Garfield media Odie is stupid, and Garfield treats him as such and takes advantage of that. In the movie, though, Odie is weirdly intelligent and he's almost like Garfield's servant. It's just weird how different it is, it's like whoever wrote them has never seen anything from the franchise before. It's just more generic for no reason.
Idk maybe garfield hypnotised odie into it through dog food
Imagine someone who doesn’t like the Garfield franchise worked on the movie, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised as that has happened multiple times in other franchises where a person who hates that franchise works on a movie about it
To be fair the comic makes plenty of jokes about Odie not being as stupid as he looks, but he's definitely never as consistently smart as he is in the movie
In the gaf and the two cgi movies , Odie acts like the average dog but It’s actually not uncommon for Odie to be smart , the Garfield show and some of the comic bits proves that but at the same time he’s a dog who gives into his instincts which what makes him somewhat dumb compared to Garfield who has a more human behavior. The movie lacks that balance between smart and dumb Odie .
The movie also makes the two seem like best friends with no bad blood despite Garfield and Odie have numerous moments in the comics , shows , and moives . where they don’t get along .
Those moments is what makes a friendship seem real the good and the bad .
@@creampuff85 ooh, bad. That's bad. I remember reading about how _Masters of the Universe: Revelation_ failed for that EXACT reason. Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) hated the _He-Man_ franchise and also never watched it.

People keep defending this movie by saying “oh it’s just a kids movie don’t be so critique about it” when a kids movie CAN be enjoyed by both kids and adults with good writing. Even a lot of kids aren’t that excited for this movie
A similar thing fans of video games (Sonic, FNAF, etc.) are doing that with video game flim adapations when they get avarage reviews from critics by saying "it's made for the fans"
Yeah to that I always say STFU. A good kids movie is one that can be enjoyed by adults as well and that leaves its mark on you. Anything can be critiqued, incl kids films.
Honestly “it’s a kids movie” sounds more like an insult to the thing you’re trying to defend
I always hate this argument and it happens every time some kids movie comes out and is divisive (I haven't seen this Garfield movie as a sidenote, this is just a general statement). There are plenty of extremely well made kids movies which are better than 99% of adult movies, people who make this argument really need to come up with better reasons to defend these kinds of movies. They don't use the argument to demean genuinely fantastic kids movies which one could easily do, they just use it to defend unspectacular kids movies. Kids may not have high standards but they still won't enjoy everything made for them.
@@mariajimenafigueroa233
To be fair, they're correct in that assessment. Unlike the weirdos claiming that you shouldn't critique a kids movie because it's made for kids. I can 100% critique a kids movie especially if it's a bad one. There's no shortage of good kids media and giving kids better media will make them more aware of when bad media gets made.
worst thing about the garfield movie is the fact that it isn't a garfield movie

And why didn't Garfield fit in the vent that his much larger father could fit into? I'm assuming it was some kind of fat joke.
@@momo-chanthegerbil6205 That was actually one of the funnier jokes to me, just the absurdity of it made me laugh
garfield's backstory of being left behind didn't just come out of nowhere that actually is his backstory even in the comics themselves
I was going to say that this film is more comic accurate to the original Garfield comics than the animated films on Cartoon Network.
There was also a TV special about it in the 1980s
I swear sometimes they got Chris Pratt for the cast just for the memes and getting trashed
And to market the movie as much as possible with his star power. That's celebrity casting for ya.
@@chrisbrasel8060 sellebrity
To me Garfield movies will never truly reach their full potential until they start making Jon the most prominent character in one of these. From what I've heard about the comics, Jon is like 95% of the point in them, Garfield and Odie are just the most marketable characters.
Garfield without Garfield is the Sole Proof of It
Also Consider that the Very First Garfield Comic Strip had Jon Introducing everything as well
So Jon Arbuckle is highly important
I mean, should this really be a shock? Garfield never really had that much depth to begin with, especially the comic strips and cartoons. Those who knew that shouldn't really expect much from this movie, it's serviceable at best.
yeah, as someone who used to watch alot of Garfield shows/movies, most Garfield "stories"(outside of His 9 lives) aren't really Garfield centric and moreso just random adventures that have Garfield just plopped into them. "what if Garfield and his friends where superheroes?" "what if Garfield goes into the real world?" and such, which is why i wasnt to bothered by the movies weird father abandonment evil cat lady bull love story plot thing (although the bull side plot does get alot of unnecessary focus tbh).
Agreed, the bit can only be stretched for so longer before it gets old. But it’s their job as filmmakers to get creative with it. You and I could create a more compelling narrative about Garfield that makes sense in probably a day. Meanwhile this is what professionals came up with
Maybe the Film could work at Shortest Runtime Possible?
My opinion is Garfield is genuinely just not meant to be a movie. I don't know how anyone is expected to push a cat that likes lasagna and does funny comic strips into a movie and they could do a show adaptation, but that would just be them on some 30 minute wacky adventure. There is pretty much no way to make a Garfield movie without having some goofy and non-canon subplot that doesn't even relate to the comics.
’d like a Garfield movie where Liz leaves Jon because he’s a no good loser simp before blowing his brains out. And then Garfield comes in to see his owner dead and angry he has no one to feed him. But then he realizes he can eat Jon’s corpse and finds it delicious. Then, days after no one sees Jon, they come to his house to find Garfield had eaten most of him and assume he killed Jon. They then put Garfield down while Odie goes to a foster home where his vegan owners starve him with meat substitutes.

Garfield 2024 feels like a movie that should have came out in the mid 2010s, like somewhere before or after the Peanuts Movie.
Except Peanuts managed to get an actually good comic strip adaptation on the big screen compared to this lazy mediocrity.
Yeah the peanuts have a great comic vibe to
@@mayelimalave8989
Thank God Blue Sky actually respected the source material of Peanuts while making it engaging for the audience. RIP
The Peanuts movie was actually a great adaptation of the comic strip.
This makes me wonder if a Garfield actually would work if Source Material Accurate as Unlike how some People say
While I enjoyed this movie (I just got back from the theater), I can definitely say that I do prefer _The Peanuts Movie_ over this. It was definitely more faithful to its source material.
Edit: Looking at a previous comment someone made, it's become clear that most of these movie adaptations often fall flat because they're based on things that don't have enough going on to make a cinematic movie. A cartoon, maybe, but not a movie (aside from Garfield, there's also Alvin and the Chipmunks, Peter Rabbit, Angry Birds, etc.). That's why they end up unfaithful, because they need to be spiced up to make a movie. Movie adaptations like _The Peanuts Movie_ and _Christopher Robin_ worked since the franchises they were based on have already proven that you _can_ make a movie with all that they have to offer because they have enough going on for them to be on the big screen.

The whole “garfield reuniting with an estranged parent” thing is done so much better in one of the tv specials. I think it was garfield on the town but I don’t really care enough to look it up
I remember reading an article that made this observation: This Garfield movie is probably the most faithful adaptation of the comic, in particular the comedy and structure as they compared it to the comic during the 80s and 90s (with even Jim Davies saying as such) and that is why critics and movie buffs are tearing it a new one.
Is there such thing as "too faithful"?
Kinda spoilers, don't read further if you want to go in 100% blind
I don't think that's true. Jon, even though I don't hate him in this movie or anything, is depicted as much more of a clumsy, but well-meaning everyman in this movie, rather than the lovable dork he was in the 90s comics
Also, several important characters from the comics don't make a return in the plot (and Jon's mostly sidelined by the new characters), like Arlene, Nermal, and Liz (the latter two only get small cameos), not even Garfield's mom appears which is really odd considering they made an entirely new character as his dad
I think Garfield & Friends does a better job, even though it does swap out Arlene for Penelope I feel like the stories are much more Garfield-y than how action-focused the movie gets near the end
I don't think it's a bad movie, I liked it in the theater, but it's not very Garfield to me
(Unless you meant in comparison to the other movies, in which case I agree since it's not hard when your competition is two live action/CGI hybrid movies)
Doing a Fum ad on a video reviewing a kids movie is a crazy move, Mark
It shows how much the casting people has narrow setted mind on things, such as A list celebs taking something nostalgic and making their mark. I was like "Lorenzo Music helped create this character! Unless Bill Murray was contractually obligated to come back, there's no way he'd ever want to come back for another one. Especially how much he hates the films in many interviews. Also, it took so long for him to be in another Ghostbusters movie, so trying to get him in an animated adaptation nobody wanted would be impossible. 😅
You should see the Latin American Spanish dub
Why Welker isn't a big enough legend for movie producers to include him is beyond me, the man's been voicing Fred since Scooby-Doo's inception
Unfortunately it seems like he just barely landed to be in the SCOOB! movie, since he doesn't even voice Fred in that movie, just Scooby (and probably because they couldn't find any celebrity with the range to play Scooby like Welker can)

Why do these movies Scoob included have such great animation but just make the most mid script and plot in the world
Honestly from everything I've seen so far, the plot of "meets dad after many years + heist mission" seems like something that would be in an animated *sequel*, not a first movie.
Better not let Quinton hear you say that.
It wasn’t the best movie, but i don’t think it was that bad. Of course if it was just an animated movie without a known character it’d probably be less talked about or just fly under the radar. But as a Garfield movie with a reunite with father plot it was okay.
The worst part of the movie is the lactose farm characters. They just seem very out of place and annoying, I would've liked the movie if that entire side plot didn't exist.
Honestly, if they ever do a sequel, they should either: A) Adapt the original 1988 script for Garfield's Judgement day (a cancelled Garfield 2D animated movie written by Jim davis himself), or B) Just take the extended cast, somber tone, more Child-like Garfield, and just more interesting edge from the Film Roman era of the character, such as the specials, and Garfield and Friends. They not only have bouncy animation, great songs, surprisingly witty dialogue and a fun cast, but they can also be very heartwarming when needed (the ending sequence from Garfield on the town, as well as the rocking chair scene from the Christmas special are still just well made tear-jerkers).

The thing that doesn't work about this movie is that Jon is barely in it when hes the driving force behind almost everything in Garfield. Jon forces Garfield into the antics and most of Garfields talking moments in the strips are his smart aleck remarks to Jons craziness or life in general. Without Jon, Garfield isn't that interesting to watch. But for some reason all these adaptations shove Jon in the back and have Garfield interact with random animal characters.

“I know where you live 😈” - Garfield (2009)
0:59 what 💀
Garfield is for kids born in the 70's. Hollywood should make a Calvin and Hobbes film.
Nah a Calvin and Hobbes TV show would actually be so good
That would be peak
The creator of Calvin and Hobbes won't ever let a movie happen. He's pretty protective of the property. There's barely any merchainse outside of a few books.
@@kungfufilm6367 Yeah this is the sad truth
Thank you, Mark, I will now get addicted to nicotine
At least the füm thing doesn't have nicotine though
@ssunsspott5170 it dose tho
1:00 that is the most cursed frame I've seen today
MARK SMOKES???
ON THIS CHRISTIAN CHANNEL???
Is this because Quinton didn't have you in his nicktoons video?
Its cuz mark made some deletd video on him from 3 year ago and quinton won't let it go
Hot take: I thought The garfield movie was pretty good.
The whole "kid saying what is that" WASN'T because he wasn't paying attention, it's because he either doesn't know what a tally mark is, or (this one is the reason *I* didn't get it) the way Snoop Dog Cat was saying it was VERY confusing (especially because he was saying "brand" instead of "tally mark").
Idk, who cares? Garfield is kept alive by corporate interest. The straight to tv cartoons are cool,
I wish they did that more often. This movie was made for legal reasons.
At least it’s better than The Emoji Movie.
I love how we've all come to agree that The Emoji Movie is Sony Pictures Animations' lowest point.
@@TheIrreverentUncleAlidk why but somehow i just enjoy every animated movie, even the emoji movie
@@millerthegamer9143 Then you must be a child or have laughably low standards.
@@TheIrreverentUncleAl One of animations lowest points in general, easily a contender for top 10 worst movies ever made
@@TheIrreverentUncleAlI don’t know dude, surfs up 2 was pretty bad
THANK YOU! I also made a video about how bad this movie was and it got bombed with dislikes and hate comments. Glad to see that some people haven’t gone insane.
11:40 "It wasn't that funny"
- Peter Venkman (The Real Ghostbusters)
Back to say that I loved the part that went like.
Garfield:You know, this truly was "The Garfield Movie(2024), starring Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson".
And then Odie was like.
Odie:Garfield, you are not Deadpool and you will never be Deadpool.STOP PRETENDING TO BE DEADPOOL,WE HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET FULL OF POLLUTION TRYING TO BE HIM WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER!
1:56 “Why did he include a picture of Andrew Garfie- oh”
0:59 AYOOO WHAT'S THIS
I think I heard something similar from a CZcams comment but the John and Garfield dynamic can be both very strong and is almost pivotal to getting Garfield right.
John is always going on “adventures”, kinda innocent, always trying to get a gal, overly charismatic/showy and halfway cool while doing so, and generally thinks he’s a main character
But you see the real main character is this fat fuc*ing lazy orange cat
There’s a lot more like how Garfield is like shaggy/scobby but also has a very thin line between messing with others and caring about others to feel happy but the dynamic between the two being near opposites is both important and useful to a good Garfield story.
What's funny is that Jon *was* the main character at the start of the comic, the local version of the comic was even named "Jon" before being renamed as "Garfield" shortly before it went global (and this is very evident by the fact a lot of the dialog-based humor relied on Jon and Lyman's conversations in the early days)
