Looking Back as We Look Forward ~ Dr. Yasir Qadhi | 7th December 2013 - Change & Modernity

  • Not all change is bad - sometimes you must change in order to survive.
    In this highly controversial and paradigm-shifting talk, Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi challenges us to think about change within 'Islam' - not the 'Islam' that is unchangeable, but the opinions of scholars who interpret the texts of Islam and think it is 'Islam'.
    Our history has plenty of lessons for us to learn from, and modern challenges require fresh thought. There are, as always, extremes in our Ummah: those who want to change everything and make the haram into halal, and those who do not understand that the Shariah allows for some change and fresh ideas.
    This is a talk not to be missed!

    Masha Allah, a great lecture, may Allah preserve and reward brother Yasir. I agree with much of what he said but I do think we should use extreme caution when we try to "change" Islam to conform to modernity and secularism because it can quickly become a very slippery slope. For example free mixing between genders, dating, putting our parents in retirement homes, these are part of this culture, but I in my humble opinion see them as contradictory to the spirit of Islam. Does not the Quran say to not even go near zina and to be the very best to our parents.

    Advancing Technology is the way forward for the lands of the East. They must adopt, adapt, advance, and create modern technology.
    In the end, Western ideology is nothing more than a series of fads that just come and go. What the west tries to portray as "modern" and "civilized" can better be defined using the words "Recent" and "Temporary".
    Westernization and Modernization are not synonymous. The illusion that they are so is just a delusion upheld by the fact that, at this point in time, advanced technology happens to reside in the west, making the West merely APPEAR more modern.
    If you take that technology away from the west, and give it to XYZ group of people, Western ideologies such as liberalism, feminism, Nationalism, and Secularism will be seen as barbaric and premitive.
    Those who aim to be civilized and portray their own ideologies as civilized must adopt, adapt, advance, and create modern technology. Unfortunately, the lands in the East tend to have elites that buy western technology rather than create it themselves. This is not the way forward. This is literally why the Ottomans joined and lost WWI. Technology can be defined as modern. Ideology cannot be defined as modern, merely portrayed as such.

    Questions::
    1) Are the stories of the Omar (ra) in the series 'AUTHENTIC' ?
    2) Do we have to TRUST the UNAUTHENTICs?
    3) Who are able to make verification?
    4) Scholars or people/masses/ummah ?
    IF the scholars are DISCONNECTED from people, THEN do we need to follow the masses?
    Now,, who are Allaah commanded us to follow? based on what?
    Allaahu Aalam.

    • @saniahsan
      @saniahsan Před 10 lety +2

      Q1) Are the stories of the Omar (ra) in the series 'AUTHENTIC' ?
      Since a sheikh reviewed the script and as Sh. Yasir told that they took the instances directly from old Seerah books, we can probably believe that the stories presented in this series are more or less 'true' if not 'authentic' per se, according to Hadiths. Remember that many stories of even the Seerah of the Prophet (S) was not preserved/collected according to the science of Hadith (checking the chains of narration and so on) and as such are not as 'authentic' as Shahih Bukhari -- so it's not even a valid question to ask whether the stories of Omar (R) presented in this series are 'authentic' or not. You may avoid it altogether or take it with a grain of salt -- that's what we learn from the wisdom of Solomon.
      * Q 2-3 becomes irrelevant after this
      Q. IF the scholars are DISCONNECTED from people, THEN do we need to follow the masses? Now,, who are Allaah commanded us to follow? based on what?
      As Sh. Yasir told, oftentimes there are differences of opinions among the ulamas -- so, in such a case, you may simply follow the Shekh you have been following or follow a doctrine that seems most convincing according to Quran/Sunnah. Also, remember just because some shekhs are going against something new doesn't mean that it is Haram (according to Quran/Sunnah) -- they are just making interpretations based on Quran/Sunnah and they are not infallible; they may make mistakes (oftentimes, because often they don't have the domain knowledge of the relevant discipline e.g. science/technology), as they did by going against printing press/coffee. I want to end with Sh. Yusuf's final pont: "Islam is above any particular scholars ... be tolerant with the scholars who differ with you ... in the end of the day TRUTH shall prevail" -- you yourself may change your current position then.
      All these are my opinions and I'm not a shekh neither am I infallible. So again, u may take it with a grain of salt -- and Allah knows best.

    • @bahathir
      @bahathir Před 10 lety

      1) You wrote "Since a Syeikh reviewed the script ..."
      Question:
      1.1) Is the Syeikh a scbolar or just one for the 'masses/people?
      1.2) Did he reviewed the stories based on the CORRECT manhad/principles of Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jammaan's (ASWJ)?
      1.3) You also agreed that there are some 'problems' in Seerah. Then why not filter and take only the Sahih/Authentic? Islam teaches us to tell and spread the truths.
      "Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience." Quran Al-Asr (103:3)
      2) Yes, there are differences among scholars, as had been told by Rasulullaah (pbuh) in his 73 sects' hadeeth. So we must be VERY careful to choose. Which one is correct? The one which follows Quran and authentic sunnahs, as had been told in Quran and sahih hadeeths, such as "Grab the rope of Allaah with molar teeths".
      Yes, Islam is not about particular scholars, but, Islam also gives the solutions to make the choice easier. Since Islam is from Allaah, so, we have to ask Allaah to guides us to the correct path, as we do at least 17 time/day. Yes, we make mistakes, but ...
      Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best of sinners are those who repent.” Source: Sunan Ibn Majah 4251 Status: Saheeh
      I am also not a scholar, but, if what I wrote have truths, take it and do research and refers the experts, ie, scholars. Yes, we need scholars who are on the correct manhaj, or become one of the scholar.
      Why everthing in Islam have to be correct and authentic?
      If someone asks us, "Is your Islam 'authentic?' What is our answer, and the answer is based on what?
      My point is, What do we get if me mixed the truth with falsehood, Saheed (authentic) with Daif (weak)? This brings back to the main question
      Who are the one who we need to refers to? Scholars or masses?
      May Allaah guides us to the truth.
      Allaahu A'lam.

    Salaam shaykh. JazakAllah khairan for such an informing lecture. A few followup questions, if you please don't mind answering. I am simply a layman and follow the hanafi school of thought in jurisprudence. My question is regarding the portion where you mention that consensus or ijma'a is when ALL the scholars are in agreement. So does that mean that if 90% of the scholarly body is in agreement on something and 10% disagrees on the contrary, the ummah should consider that 10% offshoot as "forward thinking" and adopt their fatwa and disregard the 90%? Also, we run into the issue as laymen of trying to figure out if so and so person deserves to be labeled as a scholar don't we? Who's scholarship counts and who's doesn't? What happens if 99.9% of the scholarly body of all the different groups say that praying behind a woman is haraam and .01% says its halal? Is that 99.9% considered the ijma'a or consensus opinion? or does it need to be an absolute 100% agreement with no single scholar objecting before the issue is considered the consensus opinion? And if we reject that .01% do we then label that .01% to be non-schloarly which then elevates the 99.9% right at 100%? At what percentage of agreement is a particular opinion on a specific issue considered to be the consensus opinion and who comes up with that determination? This is the confusion I've found within myself and I would be utterly grateful to you if you could provide clarification for me in the midst of your busy and proactive schedule. May Allah bless you immensely in this dunya, make you a means of guidance for mankind till the day of judgement and grant you nothing short of Jannatul Firdous in the afterlife. Ameen. Was-salaam.

Imagine an addict saying I don’t feel the effect of the drug it’s okay because I’m use to it honestly this comes off as really arrogant. Maybe they were more in touch and had more self awareness than the accuser who looks down on these learned men. You know how we all have to quit it a week before Ramadan because how it will make our fasts an act of worship very hard

      You are speaking the truth my dear friend.
      I would like to remind you of an incident that took place 1400 years ago. When muslims were migrating to abseeniya prophet, this is when islam had not revealed itself completely. Most of islams rules and regulations came into effect only in madeena. before the muhajireen went to abseeniya our messenger peace be upon him asked them how will decided what is right and worng they said based on quran. then prophet said what if there is no mention of it in the quran then they said we will base on what you said and if you didnt say antying about it then we will derive it based the first two. not the exact words but you know what i mean.
      My dear friend this is called ijthihaad. we are living in times were there are new challenges new ways of lifes. these issues did not exist at the time of the messenger or the sahaba. it is the responsibility of our scholars to be cognizant of these changes and needs and give the correct fathwa based on the quran and hadeeth. sometimes they get it wrong but as long as it is done in good faith and does not harm others these changes are legitimate.
      Yasir qadhi i think is a mujaddin of our times. i have started listening to me very recently but i can already see he is genuine and is sincere.
      I have already chosen him to be my third ustad.
      i pray to allah to guide this man and reward him multiple times and grand him jannah and forgive him if he has made any mistakes.

    • @zedsj
      @zedsj Před 9 lety

      murrmac Hi, thought i'd contribute as a student of scholarship myself:
      interestingly it is similar to the coffee example he starts off with. There is some evidence from the prophet muhammad that frowns upon stringed instruments, but scholars have explained that in those days, music were usually coupled with drinking/loitering/prostitution. Most scholars have no problem with music that brings benefit. In fact any law of Islam that cannot be linked to a benefit, or brings about more harm than benefit, becomes out of islam.
      FYI, all of islamic law must be connected to protecting what is called the 5 sacred necessities or it cannot be considered islamic:
      1) protecting One's religion (includes one's freedom to choose one's own)
      2) Life (killing unjustly is as if you've killed all of humanity)
      3) intellect (the reason alcohol consumption is frowned upon)
      4) Familial lineage (knowig one's own past, keeping family together etc)
      5) material wealth (contract law, property, inheritance etc)
      hope that helps

    • @murrmac
      @murrmac Před 9 lety

      ***** That article appears to be definitive ... it is depressing to think that there are millions of muslim children all over the world who are denied the wonderful benefits of learning to play a musical instrument.
      I also find it depressing that these same children are denied the benefits of owning a pet dog ... but that's another affair altogether.

    • @kusari86
      @kusari86 Před 9 lety

      murrmac I believe that the Maliki school is fine with Dogs as being pets. keep in mind that the reason it may be frowned upon is because of disease prevention. Especially considering that by their nature dogs, evolving from wolves, like to like people on the face and mouth. A case may be made to change the Islamic opinion given modern medical advances ( something that happens quite often in Islamic Law).
      The Prophet saw didn't despise dogs, pigs, or any animals for that matter. In fact he's said: "A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, there he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst and came out. Meanwhile he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself, "This dog is suffering from thirst as I did." So, he went down the well again and filled his shoe with water and watered it.Allah thanked him for thatdeed and forgave him. The people said, "O Allah's Apostle (SAW)! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?" He replied: "Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate (living being)."
      "A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog
      near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took
      off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water
      for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that."
