Well, the good news is there has been a push to bring it back, at least in Northern Ireland and extending some to the US, I don't know how things are in the Republic as that's not where my family is from. I know my grandmother could at least read the language, and I think spoke some when I was young - single one off words or phrases I've unfortunately long forgotten. Partially cause there were certain political issues at home, and when over here (in the US) speaking English was expected and well - some people are to put it very nicely jerks to people who speak another language/differently. But me and my mom at least are looking to at least try and learn, even if it's use state side is limited.
Part of why I really like these covers is that some of her old music from Ireland is actually in the language, so even if I don't know the meanings I sometimes recognize the words said and reminds me of when I was a kid around the house and she'd play old Irish folk music or even more modern ones (or at least 'modern' as in pre-1990's that was not yet 'old').

Ba mé, uair, Rí an domhain.
      Bhog na sléibhte mórthimpeall orm.
Reált geal na maidne, é ag lasadh romham
Ach níor airigh sé riamh mo dhóthain.
      Mo naimhde, chuile shaghais,
Ag iarraidh lom na fírinne a leigheas.
      Sluaghairm ag canadh linn
Ar mhallacht an Rí, seanRí imithe.
An eochair i dtaisce im’ chroí
Thit as a chéile mar bheadh gadaí san oíche.
Anois mé a breathnú thar timpeall orm
Ar an ríocht a bhí ann, ab áille ar domhan.
      Cloig Jerusalem iad ag seinm
Glór na n-aingeal ag ardú ionam.
Sí mo mhian, mo rogha, mo shaol,
Ní dheanfaidh muid dearmad ar an scéal.

B’shin nuair a sheas mé ar bharr an domhain.
Mé anseo seasamh i lár gaoth aduaidh
Ag iarraidh an t-olc a chloígh gan dua.
Sluaghairm ceol is drumaí ag bualadh trom
No, ní chreidfeá an troid atá istigh ionam.
Ár misean ná go mbeidh muid saor
Ní faoi choimín ag an Béarla de shíor.
Teanna timpeall is bí ag canadh linn
D’aon ghuth nach n-airíonn sé chomh binn,
      Cloig Jerusalem, iad ag seinm
Glór na n-aingeal ag ardú ionam.
Sí mo mhian, mo rogha, mo shaol
Ní dheanfaidh muid dearmad ar an scéal.
      Airím slán i m’intinn fhéin

I'm very curious. Is Irish/Gaelic commonly spoken among younger folks in Ireland? Or is the fluency dwindling, in favor of English?
And do you guys refer to it as just Irish, Gaelic, or both?

    • @tristanmurphy6969
      @tristanmurphy6969 Před 4 měsíci +4

it is called irish and has over 170,000 native speakers but over 1.6 million have some Knowledge in the language. Theres over 188 gaelscoileann {irish language primay schools } and 31 gaelcholáistí or secandry schools these are not counting the ones in Gaeltacht areas many have long waiting lists for students to get in. A Gaeltacht is where irish is the main langugae sopken. There is a small revival happing on social media and in Northern ireland with the ''DEARG LE FEARG'' movment which got equal staus for irish in northern ireland in 2022. irish is the first language of Ireland and a bi first in NI. Gaelic is a group of languages consisting of Irish, Manx and Scots Gaelic within the Celtic family there is 3 other bretonic languages.

@@tristanmurphy6969 Interesting! Very valuable info. Thank you!
So English is the primary language spoken across Ireland and NI, with most being "familiar" with Irish, though not fluently speaking it in everyday conversations.
There are specific communities and schools where Irish is the primary languague spoken, though are likely challenging to get into.
It sounds like there are very active efforts to keep Irish alive as a spoken language, and not permit it to become a "dead language", like so many other languages and language groups once they've adopted English.
On a cultural side, is there a "divide" (however slight) between the native Irish speakers and those who only speak English?

@@Arielelian yes well the Gaeltacht areas are along the west coast apart from 3 and would be more conservitive than the most of ireland and are in very rural areas. The areas are shriking but there are government programs to keep people speaking irish in 2021 one small village offerd a house for a young family to move into to stop their school from closing and over 2,000 familys aplied to get the home for 1 year. Irish is a mandatory subjct in all schools from age 5-18 but the school system is not good at teaching the language so many come to ''hate'' the language. but to go to uni you must have passed irish a suject in school unless you are exempt from it. and yes the gaelscoileann and gaelcholáistí very hard to get into i was on a waiting list for 2.5 years but didnt get in. at age 13-17 most irish kids go to summer camp for 2 weeks where they only speak irish these are Gaeltacht camps much like american summer camps but with school in the morning and a ceili { a traditional irish dance party} at night durring the day the do soprts play games and go on trips to important cultural sites while speaking irish at all times and these too are hard to get into and they are expensive but the government does offer grants. By law all road signs and all public and government buildings { libraries, airports, trains, public bathrooms ,ect} must have both english and irish signs and all major companys eg.. apple intel microsoft must have a irish language liaison. if you want to study law you must be able to do a court case completly in irish and if you as a defentent wnat you can request it in irish. It is illegal to refuse to serve anyone speaking irish and accomodations must be made even in uni people who speak irish get uni accomidation for cheeper but you must speak irish as you and your roommate are all irish speakers. i was wrong it is 1,761,420 pople as of 2020 that have some knowlage of irish 111,473 spoke weekly and 83,803 spoke daily out of education along the west coast around 48-50 percent of people could understand a large amount irish. as of 2024 Galway is a bilingual city with 48 perent of people being largly fluent in irish and 30,000 speaking it as a first language. this does not translate to the east with around 30-35 percent knowing some irish. the younger genertion 0-25 knoing alot mor than tose from 26-55 and people over 70 kew it the most but there is a small but rising push online with members of gen-z to raise there kids to speak irish as a first language

@@tristanmurphy6969 Dude! Thanks a ton for writing that! That provides a lot of insight.
It sounds like the younger generation want to reconnect with their Irish roots (language being a pivotal aspect), and are pushing harder for that. Which makes sense, as I've seen the same patterns occur within my native culture as well.
Glad to see that the Irish govt. maintains a language preservation effort. It may seem inconvenient for some, I'm sure, but I've come to understand how important it is in my later years.
Hopefully, stuff like what Colm is doing continues to inspire young folks to preserve their culture and language so it doesn't fade into obscurity, like so many other languages.
I appreciate your feedback very very much!

So, this may be silly but - could we get a video also with the lyrics? Be it just the Irish or Irish with translation (assuming that it's not just a direct word for word translation, I haven't had much exposure to the language and what little was long ago, and can't remember if it's like German where the lyrics can be the same but word order is different).
