- The most exciting and indeed worrying time for any novice falconer; flying your bird free for the first time ever!
Always choose a day when the weather is calm, you have no upcoming engagements and you’ve tested out your telemetry!
Of course it was terribly windy when we filmed this; but it added some drama…
Part:8 here

Congrats Dave, always a buzz (the first free flight). The lessons you have shown here are, 1 Murphy's law is always ready to bite your bum, 2 never never panic calmness us the golden rule, 3 beware of wind for the first few flights and 4 never be too cocky.
Oops hehehe!
What a great series, thank you for letting us be part of Henry's journey. This is going to be such a valuable resource for future falconers. Absolutely wonderful, thank you for sharing all of your tips and insight.
Thanks for the kind words ,
Sweet day Dave. I remember the first free flight I did with my 2 hawks. Both adults when I got them. I would challenge anyone to find a better feeling than your hawk coming back to the glove for the first time awesome feeling when it goes well. Thanks again for sharing your journey Dave. 😊
Yes always a great day!!
Brilliant you should put these all on dvd or thumb drive invaluable along with how to use the telemetry really invaluable no snobbery involved genuine down to earth and a sense of humour thrown in for interest just brilliant
You’re second person to say dvd hehe ; I’d need better production and sound ! Hopefully they’ll help folk here over the coming year or three . Thanks for nice comment
No nothing wrong with it keep it down to earth dont introduce any snobbery @@falconry.davesharpenatureboy
Although he didn't come straight to you and the lesson didn't really go to plan, he actually learnt a lot from that lesson about flying in the wind, so i would still see that as a good session
Yeah he’s a good boy hes been perfect after that
Lovely bird
The lovely moment of free flight, Henry was really enjoying his wings, Funny watching the awkwardness of a young Harris hawk.
Top falconry 👍❤
It was fun that day hehe
Great video, so helpful for new falconers! Don't panic, but be ready to pull out your bag of tricks (have everything with you and assume it's going to happen - lucky you if it doesn't!). I agree with you about young plumage. 🙂 What was Ryan's bird alarming at, at the end? Mine does that with a bit more drama when a dog is about.
Me hehe!
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy Ha!! "Too close. A little too close." 😅
He's a bit of a grump haha
Good day, Dave, really interesting video!
Cheers and good day to you!
That chicken noise at the end
Irritating! Be a whole video on that soon!
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy I wonder if they would tolerate hanging around with a rooster?
@ComicusFreemanius rooster might try and batter it
@@falconry.davesharpenatureboy the roosters attitude might be worse but if I coddled him a lot, he might be good. I had the idea the other day, there was a rat and none of my chickens tried running it off until I started lunging at it and then we're all chasing this rat around lol.
@ComicusFreemanius had a tame golden pheasant in garden for ages before a hh ate him….. a sad day as he had more character than any hawk!!
