    Topics discussed include:
Rectal pain (Levator Ani Syndrome) explained
Where the pains are located and how long they can last
Risk factors and causes for Levator Ani Syndrome
    When relief can be felt
When you should let your doctor know so you can get treatment
Dr. Shrikhande is the Chief Medical Officer of Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine. She distilled her global expertise into a minimally invasive, cutting-edge approach to the treatment of pelvic pain and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. With an extensive background in mainstream clinical medicine, she also makes use of many alternatives, holistic and homeopathic approaches. She has published peer-reviewed articles on the treatment of muscle pain in academic journals and works closely with renowned pelvic pain gynecologists and urologists.
At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our pelvic pain specialists provide a functional, rehab approach to pelvic pain. When you visit one of our offices, you spend an hour with your doctor reviewing in detail your medical history and symptoms. Then, we perform an internal exam (no speculum) to evaluate your nerves and muscles. Together, we'll discuss an individual treatment plan that gets to the root cause of your pain and helps you to feel better. The best part: you can begin treatment the same day!
At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms.

Rectal pain is also known as Levator Ani Syndrome. What it is, is spontaneous episodic pains in the rectum that are secondary to spasms in the pelvic floor muscular chair. These pains are said to last at least twenty (20) minutes at a time, and as they do progress, they can last longer. Patients often say that it's a sensation of a golf ball in their rectum. Patients say that they have a dull ache in their rectum or a burning, itchy sensation in their rectum. Risk factors for Levator Ani Syndrome include a history of hemorrhoids or hemorrhoid surgery, history of an anal fissure, history of prolonged sitting, particularly sitting on a hard surface and with poor posture, or chronically holding your stress in your pelvic floor muscles, and it can be aggravated with intercourse. It may be relieved with bowel movements. It is important to let your doctor know that you're experiencing these symptoms because research has shown that the earlier that we catch and diagnose and treat it, the easier it is for us to make patients better. The longer things persist, the more challenging it is for us to make it go away, really because it starts to become your new normal, both in the way your muscles are set, the way your muscle spindles are, as well as the way your nerves are trained and the way they function. So if we catch it early, we can retrain the muscles and the nerves faster and with a better prognosis.

The past couple years I’ve had a few episodes. It’s the worst pain I’ve ever felt. The first time I experienced this I thought I had to go to the bathroom. I sat on the toilet for awhile literally wanting to die. The worst part was not knowing what was causing this. Usually I wake up from a deep sleep with the pain slowly building up and when the pain peaks it’s the worst feeling that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. So happy to know I’m not the only one that goes through this.

I have had this for 13 months. On opiods for pain. Can't sit without pain and driving is hell. Been to the ER over & over & over before colorectal surgeon diagnosed it as Levator Ani. After a movement it is the worst. They recommended physical therapy but I haven't gone. Cannot get prescribed anything but Tramadol for it. I take fiber to avoid constipation. The only time Im not in pain is when I sleep. Tramadol only gets rid of part of the pain.

    Dear All,
Here below is the potential remedy which I have personally tried and felt big relief.
    1. After every meal or breaksfast (after 30 mins of your meal), drink warm water 2 glass full. Water has to be Warm.
    2. Do not eat foods which can produce gases in your body like beans, lentils, milk, brocoli, salad etc.
From my understanding, this proctaligia problem is assciated with the Vatta Dosha in Ayurveda, due to gases/air generated in the body due to indigestion.
Gases could be the main reason for buttock/hip spasm , and drinking water after meal reduces/dissolves these gases.
Please do it for 10 days and let me know if you feel any relief.
    Best Regards,
    MK

Hi I've got the same problem, first I went to family physician and she referred me to gastro physician and he did several test, including colonoscopy. But even he couldn't diagnose it, now after watching this video I'm shocked how come he doesn't know this. Anyway, since I feel like gas is forming in my stomach and gets harder and harder (gas starts to gets tighter and tighter) and slowly and painfully tries to move down to rectum but can't escape and that's when the pick point of pain starts, as if there's a huge coconut or golf ball has been shoved. Oh God the pain!! Anyway than I started keeping journal when it happens and what food makes it worst. After that I came to conclusion that it's a gas. So I started avoid gassy food like cauliflower, broccoli, beans, dairy, also don't sit all the time, try to move as soon as possible and main thing is when you're getting this sensation at the beginning take gas x medicine, oh God it helped me alot. And also instead of normal or cold water if possible make a habit of drinking warm water. And massage the stomach when you fill like bloating. Please know that I'm not a doctor nor the doctor advise me this but when you go through such an awful pain you want to try anything and finger cross 🤞 it's been working on me. It's not the %100 proof but it worked on me. Hope we all can get rid of this awful and embarrassing pain.

I have about 6 - 10 episodes a year. As i dealt with this i started to see trigger patterns. If i slept with my legs a certain way. Ejaculation, bowel movements, and sometimes out of thin air. It happens with bowel movements normally when i make myself go, if i really really have to go it hardley ever happens then. The pain starts out dull on the left side of my rectum and the increases to pain that will bring hulk to his knees then it dies down then pain repeats pattern on the right side of my rectum. This xan take anywhere from 20-40 minutes. There are other times that i feel the pain starting and i can massage my scrotum and it will go away before peaking in pain.

no, its extremely difficult, I can only tell you at this point the problem seems to have something to do with the general stress level I have, more stress more occurrences, lately the occurrences have been low as my stress level is also low,
A fix is going to be difficult as I have been misdiagnosed on multiple occasions with numerous problems including lol, IBS , which is a diagnostic you seem to get when no one knows whats wrong, turns out that is was a sensitivity to corn related products, thickener 1422 , maize, corn starch and many others, Which i was causing me great stress because When i was having a reaction to corn i would get bad diarrhoea during the day then causing many cases of the "proctalgia fugax" pain at night, A vicious cycle of being open then shut. ewww. Doctors know of proctalgia fugax as I have asked a couple about it but have no Idea how to stop it.
I would recommend your own journey of checking your diet, staying away from ingredients lists that have lots of number related ingredients rather than natural ones. If you have a corn problem you have to stay away from Gluten free products as they load it up with corn when they take away the gluten, So i am "gluten free intolerant" lol
The treatment seems to be caring for yourself at this point, eating more natural products and less processed crap, massages and less stress, oh and Valium in the top draw for 1 am emergencies as Valium relaxes mussels. homeopathy also helped a lot for my general health and in identifying the corn thing.
You can message me whenever you want as I get the notification.

@@eilishkane3066 The proctalgia fugax occurrences are mainly just horrible pain with temporary constipation, for 20 minutes to an hour, usually at night.

Same here. I’ve just decided to stop masturbating all together. I notice it started feeling like a knife was stabbing my anus and it ruined a sexual encounter for me
